The Weekly Standard published An Open Letter to Mitt Romney on Tuesday night, begging the former Republican presidential nominee to launch a third-party bid.
[T]hese are extraordinary times, and your nation still has need of your service. I respectfully implore you to run for president as an independent candidate in 2016, Jay Cost wrote.
Cost slams presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clintons Nixonian paranoia of enemies and calls her Republican counterpart, Donald Trump, a sympathizer with the nativist alt-right.
They do not see Americans as Americans, the letter continues. They see each of us as potential allies or foes, depending upon their small-minded political calculations.
It ends by pleading Romney to run.
Governor Romney, there is nobody else but you who is capable of such a bid," Cost writes. Only you possess the experience, the political network, the good health, and the time to dedicate to this great endeavor [of launching a third-party bid].
The Weekly Standard was founded by Bill Kristol, a prominent Never Trump conservative who has been trying to recruit a third-party candidate.
I tried to find a graphic for that but couldn't come up with one quickly.

I am a constitutionalist. I believe that government at all levels should be strictly limited to the authority and power specifically granted to it in the United States and relevant State constitutions. Nothing more, and perhaps much less.
Very few politicians and political candidates agree with me.
Putt your Mitt in the mitt of the man who
couldn’t beat Obama,
putt your mitt in the mitt of the man
who will lose to Hill.
Put your mitt in the mitt of the man whose underwear
is a magic brand
putt your mitt in the mitt of the man who will finish third.
My point was that you can have a high opinion of Romney, yet believe it is time for Romney to give up the ghost.
I described myself as a Christian Constitutional conservative for several years on FR posts. A kinduv cumbersome title and it still doesn’t convey what I want precisely. So, I’ve mostly dropped it primarily because of the current media misuse and subsequent learned misapplication by others what I mean by “Christian, Constitutional, and/or conservative”.
Jay Cost wants Romney. Conservative elites riding the gravy train in DC WANT Romney. The rest of us have already told Romney we don't want him... we don't want Jeb... we don't want Lindsey ...
We told them with our VOTES. We voted NO. NO. NO.
These 'conservative' elites think voters don't matter? Is that their problem?
Jay Cost and his NEVER Trump friends should pack up and move to a third world hellhole where THAT idea rules - the idea that elites should get THEIR WAY OVER THE WISHES OF THE PEOPLE... It's a commonly accepted idea in North Korea... Cuba... most of South America all the the ME except Israel... Evey hellhole on the planet feels 'their elites' should rule.
Our 'elites' don't want to move to a third world hellhole where OTHER elites make the calls? Ahhh yes, THEY want to be the thugs... THEY think they're smarter and better equipped for power than 'the people'. Same story in every hellhole guys...never works. Not there - not here.
Trusting the people is what made the Untied States great...
