Washington State holds its Republican primary on Tuesday, and with one candidate left in the race, there's not too much drama about the outcome. But in a twist and what would the 2016 race be without a twist? 40 of Washington's 41 delegates selected Saturday to attend the Republican National Convention in July are Ted Cruz partisans. Cruz supporters outnumbered Donald Trump supporters at the state GOP convention in Pasco, and they were better organized, pushing through the Cruz slate of delegates over occasional protests from Trump backers, who noted repeatedly that Cruz is no longer in the race.
Among the Trump supporters who did not get elected a national delegate is Trump state campaign chairman Don Benton, a Washington State senator. Benton predicted that the Cruz delegates will come around to supporting Trump in fact, ACCORDING TO STATE PARTY RULES, they have to VOTE FOR TRUMP at the convention, assuming Trump wins the primary on Tuesday. But the Republicans in Washington State are not yet unified, The Seattle Times reports, and several candidates for statewide office are either studiously not saying if they will support Trump, like gubernatorial candidate Bill Bryant, or saying they won't. "Do you think I enjoy this? Not supporting the nominee?" said Chris Vance, a GOP candidate for U.S. Senate. "It's unpleasant."
>As a side note, I also hope that these Cruz delegates will push for good convention rules and hold the Rules Committee accountable for sending the right rules to the convention. Then I also hope that, no more than an hour before the first ballot, Cruz will announce that he is not putting his name up for nomination and wants his delegates to vote Trump.
Dream on. Cruz doesn’t have the class to do that. What he will do is try to make the convention all about him. He’s the biggest sore loser I’ve seen since grade school.
She put up with a lot before she gained the crowd. A lion’s cub as she said, with a lion’s heart.
I don’t know...I never read the tags.
If the shoe had been on the other foot, the Cruzites would have posted far worse things to the Trumpsters!
Beautifully stated; yet again!
No it didn’t get better.
Many thanks for your very kind words.
MM and I share quite a few interests, which both of us have spent many decades studying and keeping up with. We sometimes go a bit OT, when something in a thread leads us there. So many thanks for not getting upset by our slight crossover into Brit politics.
What "RINO CRAP"? Are you claiming that trump supporters are RINOS?
Cruz is a CINO and his uber rabid, drooling sycophants can't see the forest for the trees.
Two thumbs up, Rita!
The Cruzers are not the better "Grassroots organization in place", they are the old line GOPe that have backed Cruz only to attempt to stop Trump. You are a a pawn. Don't be pwned by the GOPe.
No state is what it once was and hell yes, Trump IS an old fashioned patriot, Conservative, and a man who harkens back to the way men used to be, instead of the damned silly, soft, Pajama boys in footies, metrosexuals that the Millennials are today.
My 18-year old daughter’s interest in politics (and of course my own) got us to our precinct, district, and then to the Washington State convention as delegates.
One of the delegates we voted on finally won on the fourth ballot as an alternate to go to the national - another 18 year old!
Yes - the younger folks stood out among us grey-haired folks. The chairwoman called out the two youngest - one was 17, but will be 18 in August. (That got a call from the floor - was that legal? Yes it was, as he was registered ahead of the deadline as a Republican). Several other people went to a mike and said they had an 18 year old from their county. I told my daughter that I was tempted to go up and embarrass her.
A show of hands for first-time attenders to the state convention was also called - I’m guessing close to 50% of us (old and young) were newbies (myself included).
I had heard it was 85% Cruz supporters as delegates to the state convention. A few were “nevertrumps”, but most of us realize that Trump will be our nominee, and will do what we can to beat Hillary. And the delegates that we voted to the national mostly came across as “unity” types, but will also do what they can to keep the platform conservative.
Up until the last moment the chairwoman had hoped that Mr. Trump would attend, but he couldn’t make it. She did say Mr. Trump told her personally that he would come again to Washington State to campaign. “So won’t that be great! When was the last time a presidential candidate came to Washington State to campaign!? We’re going to turn Washington RED this year!!” (Lots of hoots and hollers and applause)
One of Trump’s supporters (long-time county politician) gave a speech and put on a “movie” about “the real Donald Trump.” I’m guessing it was the speaker’s attempt - it was really lame. Just a bunch of clips off the internet spliced together - many of the clips blurry and hard to hear. I hope he doesn’t plan on using it more - it didn’t do a very good job of promoting Mr. Trump IMHO. My daughter said her old boyfriend could have done a better job. Hopefully the Trump campaign will give him something he can use.
Lol. No, did I say that? No, you did.
Trust me, TPTB would not put cRuz in. It would be Romney or Ryan. Hand picked. cRuz is nothing but a tool, not the final product, to the RINO’s.
What would you do, then?
Not vote for Hillary. Probably put 3 clothespins on and vote for whoever is running against Hillary - because Hillary is a bridge too far, IMHO.
Again, just wow.
“Wow, has that ever happened where a VP choice was refused?”
I’m not sure. Not in my lifetime, but before 1976, they used to have a closed-door nominating process, so these deals were all made without too many people knowing all the specific horse-trading that went on. I doubt it would happen anyway, unless Trump were to try to put a Dem or known RINO like Corker on the ticket. Hopefully he’s much smarter than that.
Cruz hasn’t given up anything. He’s still in this for the win.
I’ve seldom seen a bigger A.H.
