Trump Has No One But Himself to Blame for a Weak Ground Game
The National Review ^ | April 11, 2016 | Jim Geraghty

On March 1, the Colorado Republican party prepared for 60,000 voters to arrive at nearly 3,000 precinct-caucus sites across the state. Those voters would select men and women to attend the party’s county assemblies and congressional district conventions, in the first step of a multi-part process that determined 34 of Colorado’s 37 delegates to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

To hear Donald Trump and his fans tell it, those tens of thousands of Republicans never arrived, never made their choices, and never had the chance to play a role in selecting the party’s delegates. Matt Drudge, the populist Right’s news-aggregating provocateur, contends that Colorado Republicans were given less opportunity to vote than Iraqis. Perhaps, he muses, “George Bush has to invade Colorado to make it a democracy.”

And yet, in high-school cafeterias, churches, and other community centers, registered Republicans in the Centennial State got together and cast votes that March evening. Those they chose went on to county assemblies and district conventions. At the seven congressional district conventions, held the first week in April, the attending delegates selected three national delegates and three alternates who will head to Cleveland. At the county assemblies, held throughout March, attendees selected more than 600 people to compete for the 13 at-large delegate slots filled at the state convention this past weekend. Trump’s tantrum on Twitter obscured the fact that eight of the elected alternates said they would support him if given an opportunity to vote in Cleveland....

“#nevercruz. Never never never never.”

_____________________________________________

Up to this point I’d supported Trump but promised to give Ted my vote if he won the nomination.

That’s changed. I’m now voting Trump in the PA primary in a couple of weeks, and will also be voting for him in the general, even if that means writing in his name.

Cruz is a piece of shit, and his supporters are vile, bitter people.

All candidates had the state primary rules back in Oct.

Ted Cruz plays by the rules.

Sleazy Trump didn't even get a majority vote in FL, yet won all the delegates.

But, hey, those were the rules and you were fine with that!

The sleaze and slander comes from the Donald Trump side.

All I see in this article is an explanation of the way caucus states work. It seems pretty straightforward for a somewhat arcane political process. Ron Paul used such rules to his advantage several years ago.

It's the way Minnesota worked until this year. This year vote distribution in Cleveland follows more closely the preference poll, but only on the first ballot. The fact that Minnesota's caucus attendees (starting in precincts) had control of anything but delegates had to be carefully explained this year. It has been pioneer territory.

I suspect every caucus state uses some version of the same basic set of rules.

Also, for many years I have been a delegate or alternate at the state level. There are always people with axes to grind lobbying me for this or that. That lobbying continues, literally, until the issue is decided at the convention.

Finally, the delegates are ultimately responsible for rules. Cauci are packed all the way up the ladder to change or enforce rules according to the will of the attendees at every level.

If every Cruz and Trump supporter could act adult long enough in Cleveland, they could ally themselves and insist 40B become the convention rule regardless of what any putative puppeteer might want. After that they can be as bitter, partisan and exclusionary as they like.

I still think Cruz OR Trump are more appealing that anyone the Democrats are vomiting.

I just wish he would shut his mouth. I can’t stand listening to him. It’s like listening to a cheesy televangelist telling me how I just need to send him a little bit more.

Ted Cruz won all the delegates in Coloradu fair and square. He has absolutely nothing to be sorry for or apologize for.
It’s not Ted Cruz’s fault that Sleazy tRump is too stupid to read the rules is it?

I wonder how much of this is really Cruz’s ground game vs the organizational benefit of having the entire party apparatus (for now) lined up behind him. A candidate with the state, county, local chairman and groupies on his side is going to appear a lot more “organized” than the guy who does not. In any event, I will never vote for the guy who is in second place going into the convention and I suspect there are millions of others who think the same.

Imagine that!

Gullible Trump and his Republican supporters thought you needed votes to win an election.

What sore losers...

Typical mindless zombie tRumpbot reaction. You crazies simply can't handle the truth. Your Furher is the biggest liar and con man ever born.

But it is true, what we are witnessing from much of the enemedia is propaganda. The propaganda is aimed at making this "Big Steal" from the GOP establishment and Cruz so that it will appear normal, which it is NOT. It's put out so that they are attempting to make this normal and diminish Trump in any way they can so the "Big Steal" can move forward.

From your response, propaganda works. There is leftist and really GOPe propaganda out there comparing Trump to Hitler and he is far from that in reality. The only way to battle propaganda is to continue to point it out for what it is.

But look how you bought in to that propaganda. It works and so many of you Cruz supporters have fallen for it and continue to fall for it. Propaganda works and you just proved that. Who's the mindless zombie now????

Can you or some other Cruz supporter explain what is "the ground game"?

This is not an attack post or critical, but just a request to understand. What does "the ground game" CONSIST of? Is it TALKING to a delegate and changing their mind to represent another candidate than the one they were with on the primary ballot?

Never mind. I found the answer. From the Washington Post, 4/11/16. This is Cruz's ground game, or "courting" of delegates in states where Trump won, and left, but Cruz operatives remained behind for the "ground game."

Under regulations established in the 1980s, delegates cannot take money from corporations, labor unions, federal contractors or foreign nationals. But an individual donor is permitted to give a delegate unlimited sums to support his or her efforts to get selected to go to the convention, including money to defray the costs of travel and lodging.
