Bernie Sanders and Ted Cruz appear poised for victory in Tuesdays Wisconsin primary, but Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are still in good shape nationally.
Thats the finding from Public Policy Pollings latest survey, released on March 31. In Wisconsin, Sanders leads Clinton 49-43 in the Democratic primary; on the GOP side, Cruz has a narrow 38-37 lead over Trump, with John Kasich a distant third at 17 percent.
See the Wisconsin numbers here.
PPP director Tom Jensen says the Republican numbers are a little deceiving, though. He says about a third of Kasich supporters say they may change their minds on election day and they favor Cruz over Trump by a wide margin, so Cruz may end up with a bigger victory than the poll indicates. (Donald Trump remains the frontrunner in PPPs national poll, though, with a 42-32 lead over Cruz.)
See PPPs national numbers here.
On the Democratic side, Jensen says Sanders leads Clinton partly because Wisconsin is an open-primary state, where non-Democrats can vote as well. Clinton leads Sanders among registered Democrats, 50-42, but Sanders has a big lead among independents, 62-31, giving him the overall edge. (Jensen says this doesnt bode well for Sanders in the long run, though: after Wisconsin, most of the biggest remaining states are closed-primary states, and thats an advantage for Clinton.)
Looking ahead to the general election, PPPs latest national survey suggests that Sanders and Clinton would perform equally well what matters is whom the Republicans nominate. In hypothetical head-to-head matchups, Sanders and Clinton both beat Donald Trump by 7-8 point margins and trail John Kasich by 3-4 points. Both Democrats also lead Ted Cruz Clinton by 3 points, Sanders by 7. (Could the Republicans benefit by nominating a dark horse like Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan at a contested convention? Jensen says no: both candidates would still lose to whomever the Democrats nominate. In fact, in this weeks national poll, Romney performs even worse than Trump.)

Within 48 hours this will go the other way.
Cruz. Trump. it’s all good to me either way. I’m tired of this game.
On the Dem side, Sanders will probably top this poll. On the GOP side, It is neck and neck and inside polling knows it.
If Trump pulls off a win it will defy expectations and will be huge.
If Cruz wins he’ll get about 20 delegates and Trump will still be ahead bt close to 270.
What happened to that so-called 10 point lead for Cruz?
Different pollster.
Isn’t Wisconsin one of the big liberal states?
If Cruz blows it in Wiscy it’s over for sure.
Is anyone surprised that the left-wing PPP pollsters report Trump is way ahead of Cruz nationally? .....The Dems want Trump because national polls show Hillary tromps him in a general election, while Cruz will beat her.
Trump will crush Hillary and they know it.
Where are you living? From here, it’s hard to imagine how Cruz wins anyone over to his side. By taking on Neil Bush to work on this campaign, he alienating everyone who voted against Jeb. The GOP elite couldn’t even generate 20% of the Republican primary vote for Jeb.
“The Dems want Trump because national polls show Hillary tromps him in a general election, while Cruz will beat her.”
Hillary pays people to protest/disrupt Trump, Sanders pays people to protest/disrupt Trump, BLM, SOROS and Muslims are paid to protest/disrupt Trump. The MSM and Establishment are against Trump 24/7.
Their behavior is the exact opposite of what the polls alluded too above say the enemies of America would be doing if Trump was so easy to beat by Hillary.
Exactly. I've posed some questions to the Trump-haters here on FR regarding these Establishment/Media push polls that Ted Cruz supporters love to parrot. Even though everyone knows such polls are "boob bait for bubbas", it seems as if there's a lot of overlap between the Establishment and the Cruz campaign, with respect to propaganda goals.
If it's true that Hillary would beat Trump so easily, then wouldn't the Left want to see that matchup? And if so, then why try to counter-productively convince GOP primary voters that Trump would have no chance against Hillary in the general election?
Seems a little odd, to be sure...
Or maybe we're supposed to believe that the Left actually has the best interests of the GOP at heart, and is heroically trying to help GOP voters make the right choice in their nominee!
I've asked Cruz supporters about this, and I've never gotten a good explanation as to why the Left would be propagating information that would be much more beneficial to them if it was instead kept under wraps.
It's almost as if the Left is actually more concerned about a Hillary-Trump matchup than they're letting on!
So again I ask Ted Cruz supporters: what is the motive of these Left-friendly Media outlets in conducting and publicizing such anti-Trump propaganda?
Could it be that the Left would actually prefer for Hillary to face Senator Cruz instead of Donald Trump, even though Ted Cruz supposedly does better against her than Donald Trump in these hypothetical matchups?
Very strange...
Cruz is betting that Trump will not go into the convention with 1237 delegates in his pocket and the convention will be open. Putting aside the interesting question of the effect of the Rule of Eight, a prudent campaigner will seek ways to enlist the votes of delegates as they become free to vote their consciences. It is quite smart and perfectly proper for Cruz seek to get that Rolodex.
Meanwhile, we can expect Donald Trump to attempt to buy delegates just as he has bought politicians his whole career. Those delegates that Trump will seek to buy or bribe will be the same delegates that Cruz will importune. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.
Problem for Cruz tho is Trump has more money then the RNC can pull in, much more, and also has more motivated people. Cruz has gullible people who have not yet woken up to him and America haters. Trump has Americans wanting to save America - that’s a pretty powerful motivator.
When you find yourself on the same side as Soros, Democrats, Establishment, MSM, Muslims, Mexico, China, etc., against the one they apparently fear the most; there is something very wrong with your position. Its not logical for them to be attacking Trump like they are if he was as its claimed he is.
Common Sense and Logic are called for here
This will be hard for many Trump supporters to accept about polls, but pollsters actually try to get the polls right, as that is there job. Polling is not cheap, and candidates and organizations pay big for correct polling.
While it is easy to disregard polls we don’t like, and polls often don’t catch late breaking movement, and always seem to underestimate the Christian conservative candidate, RCP averages are usually pretty accurate.
