A letter in the Financial Times Tuesday attracted attention online because it was written by a liberal couple who said they were considering voting for Donald Trump, even though they are "not the sans-culottes you see as the prototypical Trump voter."
In the letter, Jon and Elsa Sands, who describe themselves as socially liberal affluent Americans, believe Trump is the only option even as they compare voting for him to voting for a "tameable Hitler in 1933."
The letter reads:
Sir, My wife and I are affluent Americans with postgraduate degrees. We are socially liberal and fiscally mildly conservative. We are not the sans-culottes you see as the prototypical Trump voter. We are well aware of his vulgarity and nous deficiency yet we contemplate voting for him. Why? Electing the standard-bearer of the Democratic Party seems purposeless. The neanderthal Republicans barely respected the legitimacy of Bill Clinton's or Barack Obama's election, let alone that of Hillary who would arrive tainted with scandal and the email lapses hanging over her head. We would get four years of gridlock and "hearings". The Republican tribunes, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, are backward, foolish and inexperienced. John Kasich, a moderate with extensive governmental experience and a willingness to compromise, is an also-ran. That leaves The Donald, really a moderate in wolf's garb, who would owe nothing to either party and might strike deals, for instance on tax reform. Yes, we could be like the good citizens who voted for a "tameable" Hitler in 1933 to get things back on track. But the alternatives look worse.
Elsa Sands, 65, told BuzzFeed News that she and her Harvard-educated husband, Jon, are not the "nutcases" that the media makes out Trump voters to be.
Sands, who teaches English to refugees and described herself as a big supporter of refugee resettlement, said that even though Trump is a "big jerk, brash, over the top and egomaniacal," he was also a "big-mouth pragmatist who can get things done." She also said that he was a moderate who "doesn't go around hating people" and called him a "brilliant communicator."
"He tends to be flamboyant and, like New Yorkers, talks in hyperbole," Sands said. "He exaggerated it to get attention, because a moderate cannot run in the Republican Party." Sands believes that the media has "distorted" Trump's statements and are making him out to be someone they want him to be.
"He's not one of them," Sands said. "He's a Rockefeller Republican. There aren't any more of them."
The couple believes that the Republicans consider Democratic presidents to be illegitimate and will not make deals or compromise with them. "They set out to destroy Obama," Sands said. "What are they going to do to Hillary, who carries all this baggage with her?"
Sands, who voted for Obama in 2008, and who has worked for liberal causes, said it was Trump who supported Planned Parenthood after the Republicans "trashed it."
She said that the Republican Party leadership dislike Trump because they believe he will destroy the party. "That might be a reason to vote for him," she said.
She said that with a "corrupt Hillary, silly little Rubio, and mean-spirited Ted Cruz," they have "nowhere else to go" besides Trump, even though she admitted she was nervous about considering voting for him.
"It's a very scary hope, if we vote for him, that he might be pragmatic and listen to advisers," Sands said. "It's a sorry state we've come to that we have Trump running out there and we're considering voting for him."
They’re weirdos, but their votes count. LOL
They sure got their money’s worth for their post-grad degrees, huh? Just oozing with self-congratulatory brainpower.
Those who choke when Trump clearly, clearly just for these people, says 'Abortion is Evil but Planned Parenthood helps women so let's defund them for abortion but realize they do a lot of good' - do you finally understand? You lose nothing and now these ridiculous people will vote for Trump, not to mention convince their ridiculous friends to do the same - who knows - the lemmings may even start herding, but making up at least one vote for the foolish doctrine-conservatives who WON'T vote because he says stuff like this. Please tune in and understand what's behind his lines, especially when he repeats them over and over like this one.
It's a conscious act, specifically aimed to lure the silly dems, it's not a gaffe or a mistaken utterance that reveals the evil liberal within.
We should put this one in charge of voter outreach.
That'll play real well to the common man.
We could get a lot folks like this when you really consider the contrast in messages.
Donald Trump: The institutions of our Federal Government have let the great people of the USA down. Let’s fix the way government is elected and operates, let’s Make America Great Again.
Hillary Clinton: There is nothing wrong with America and the institutions of our Federal Government, they are already great. What needs fixing is the people, we need to come together with more love and kindness.
Let’s pray that Hillary keeps crafting messages like that.
Teaching English to Refugees ... even as she votes with the rabble. You know it could catch on with liberals to vote for Trump ... at last small enclaves ... they are in constant need to socially distinguish themselves by being contrarian - it's as if by being wrong, they demonstrate their intense humility. In this case, they might go double contrary and do the right thing.
If they are actually educated they would know that the GOP bent over forward and grabbed their ankles for "The Won".
Agitprop to turn out the liberal vote.
“We are not the sans-culottes you see as the prototypical Trump voter.”
More snobbery. Their disdain for Republicans, might as well call them what so many others do, Rethuglicans. Very cutesy.
I don't care if they vote for Donald or not. And I wasn't aware anyone questioned the legitimacy of the Clinton presidency.
Obama's the one who put up a fake birth certificate on the WH site. May still be there. The information on it may be true, but it's cobbled together. And a few more things.
He won. And now he has Trumped us.
They sound like useful idiots. The party line is that anything wrong with the country is because Republicans did not give everything to President Obama.
In 1984, it was pointed out that true party members always, instinctively, knew what lie to believe at what time.
These are those people.
I used to have Nannie friends that worked for people like this during the late 80’s early 90’s.
I used to love rummaging trough their Cambridge mansions while they were out saving the world on their Trust Funds....
When you have to look up culottes, you probably are without them (I knew what sans meant, but then I cheated by being vaguely familiar with French — I find that’s the best sort of familiarity).
Anyway, if anyone is tired of their culottes, send ‘em to me as I am open to new experiences.
The whole article is oozing with condescension.
“And I wasn’t aware anyone questioned the legitimacy of the Clinton presidency.”
Yes, where did they get that? I loathe Bill Clinton but never once questioned the “legitimacy” of his presidency, and don’t recall any other Republican doing so.
Awwwww! That’s so cute! She’s growing up and beginning to get over herself. (Excuse me now while I go slit my sans-colluted artery.)
Most people don’t understand the art and science of marketing. When the left and the right pull at the middle like each end of a rubber band, eventually it snaps.
But look at the generosity they show in reaching all the way down to our level to explain themselves to us. You've got to acknowledge their compassion for us shoeless rabble.
Trumps name would already be on the ballot if he would have stayed democrat.
I think this couple is the product of the media. They’ve adopted all the media narrative of all the candidates. They think republicans don’t compromise with Obama and out to destroy him? Totally false.
