Here's what Republicans would need to do to stop their own front-runner--and what they'd destroy if they failed.
It wasn't so long ago that the political universe was licking its collective chops over the prospect of a contested Republican convention, a delegate fight that went all the way to July without a nominee. Now, with Donald Trump notching his most decisive primary win yet--and looking to pick off several more on Super Tuesday--we're hearing that the contest will be over by the Ides of March. That means Trump could walk away with a nomination that almost no traditional Republicans ever wanted to see happen.
What could stop him? So far, his opponents have barely made a dent in The Donald. There's a good chance the race will be over unless the Republican Party establishment and its conservative core do something that neither party has ever done: gather the forces, pool their money, and train all their collective firepower against their own front-runner....

Another case of “Let’s you and him fight.”
I read that and said to myself, holy moley! that's what Jeb called himself, and now that is what Kasich thinks he is. I also had no clue the rules changed from 5 to 8 states. Great article, thanks!
He’s still stoppable. But they had better do it quickly.
The Republican apparatus in many states gets to pick delegates who are bound to Trump on a first ballot.
If they get to the convention, the GOPe could use the delegates they control but committed to vote Trump to change rules to deny Trump the nomination I suspect.
Last night, if you paid attention, you saw Cruz was the establishment, his mask came off last night, we all saw who he really was. And it wasn’t pretty.
Ridiculous. Cruz has fought the GOPe his whole career. That includes defeating Dewhurst here in Texas.
Terribly disappointed in Cruz over that. Was dead set on him, but now I’m uneasy.
$19 TRILLION in monopoly money. That’s what they stand to lose if Trump wins.
“They recruited Cruz last night, he got his 30 pieces of silver, and will now slither away”
Nonsense. Trump is not just anti-establishment, he is also anti-conservative on many issues.
Cruz saying Rubio would be a better president than Trump is no betrayal. Cruz does not owe Trump anything.
All the nasty things Trump said about Cruz are more of a betrayal. Trump had my early support as a good second choice. But he has been working really hard to alienate conservatives like me.
THINK BEFORE YOU WRITE NEXT TIME — PLEASE. You’re sucking up the boob bait for the bubbas.
So the GOP-E is scared to death of Trump. What are you smoking my friend? Bob Dole, Jimmy Carter, Scott Brown, Chris Christie HAVE ALL ENDORSED Trump in different ways. It is Cruz that strikes fear in the little vampires like Lindsey Graham, who even talks of killing Cruz on the Senate floor. C’mon who is hated by the establishment. It sure isn’t Trump.
The Washington insiders are scared of Trump. Oh sure. He is friends with the Clintons. It should be a fun race — two corrupt DC insiders (Trump and Clinton). After all, Trump only gave $100,000 to the Clintons.
Oh, you need to wise up. o Cruz has always been establishment elite. Unlike Trump, the establishment HATES CRUZ. I suppose, in your warped view, the attacks by Cruz on McConnell — calling him a liar on the Senate floor — were all a game. The Trump supporters on this site ARE NUTS, PURE NUTS.
Read today’s Wall Street Journal column by Kim Strassel. Trump is the ultimate insider, pal with the Clintons, pal with the DC elite, the guy Reid thinks he can work with. TRUMP IS PLAYING YOU FOLKS FOR FOOLS. Great job — and keep thinking that Cruz is the establishment, as old Lindsey Graham talks of killing him on the Senate floor. Trump can make a deal with them instead.

Exactly
Trump represents precisely the grand coalition they always crow about but they can’t control him and he is against immigration which is their holy grail to retain power
I’m a southerner ....except for Reagan a few others we have never trusted the GOP much having lived under their martial occupation yoke once
I hope Trump shakes their sorry asses up
It’s the same hate trump sour grapes asshats
But now they are looking at amnesty poster boy eclipsing Cruz
And guess what I smell in them?
Fear and second guessing followed by the realization since Cruz just endorsed Rubio over Trump....
That they might have to rethink this shite
Most Cruz folk will grin and bear it and ride with Trump over Rubio
No question
Who likes Rubio?
Establishment moderates
I had dinner with two tonight
Just goes to show how corrupt they all are.
Huh. Now I’m confused. So which is it? That Trump is the ultimate deal-maker and that he’ll make the deals to get along and go along with the establishment of both parties? Or that he’ll take away their gravy train. It can’t be both. And as we all know....Donald couldn’t possibly be lying about being that “deal-maker” now....
could he? lmao
Ted just proved that he is in the senator club with his very foolish Rubio endorsement. In other words his presidency would be useless to us.
Then go whine at the anti freeper sites
I can give you directions
You Cruz snobs are insufferably self righteous
We’re pitiful and sad and you’re Godlike
We get it.
But hey you can go cozy up with Cruzs new BFF the cabana boy
