Heâs a brilliant orator with a sharp legal mind. But his expression unsettles me. I know my reaction is visceral and automatic, but as a neurologist it is my business to notice things out of the ordinary and probe them. The Senatorâs atypical expressions leave me uneasy.
Skill in reading faces is so fundamental to our species that 54 facial muscles orchestrate its endless nuances, which others read like a book just as we read them. Only some of these many facial muscles are under voluntary control, which is one reason it is so hard to maintain a poker face or counterfeit a smile.
Downturned expressions usually signal disagreeableness or disgust. But I honestly donât know because such an expression is rare in the context of public presentations that are meant to win people over. He may well be unaware that the message of his body language is incongruent with his words.

I played volley ball until I got hurt when I was in my 50’s.
DO not hold your breath!
“That face”
I still remember his toothy smile!
One of the greats. “I am here to chew bubblegum...”
I don’t know about facial expressions, but I do know that when a politician breaks out in maniacal laughter when asked a pointed question (Hillary), a lie is forthcoming.
I wouldn’t shoot the messenger. I’m on the fence between Cruz and Trump. I’m hoping Trump destroys Hillary. Bloomberg jumps in the race and Lieden and Liawatha also enter the circus.

I do not have an MD, not am I trained in psychiatry, but I put this current opinion in the same category.
If physical good looks were the only qualification for President, Rubio would be on top, and Trump at the very bottom with his silly comb-over.
And Christie would not even be allowed to run.
They already have. Trump was on there and is happy to poke fun at himself though.
Law enforcement sometimes have the same problem.
Me neither.
But, I ride a Harley and play the Bass.
That’s MY therapy! :-)
Oh c’mon. The guy can’t help what he looks like. Although my wife never fails to comment on it in a highly derogatory way.
His phony politi-vangelist schtick is what grates me. I already have a President that has me hitting the mute button, I don’t need another.
He’d be just fine as a second chair though.
Well, the writer is probably unaware that Ted Cruz has a mutant face made of play dough. Of course it doesn’t work like a normal human face.
