Republicans Need to Pick Their Anti-Trump ASAP (And it can't be Cruz)
The Huffington Post Huffpost Politics The Blog ^ | December 23, 2015 | Matt Teitelbaum

Since announcing in June that he'd seek the Republican nomination for President in 2016, Donald Trump has dominated in both polls and media coverage. Polls indicate that after a myriad of controversial statements, including Trump's proposal that no Muslims be allowed to immigrate into the United States, he has maintained a large lead over his rivals nationwide.

The conventional wisdom of political pundits has often been that Trump will eventually fall under the weight of his own bluster and bombast. For months now, Republicans have waited for his campaign to implode. With just one month to go until the first voting contests begin, that simply hasn't happened.

It's time for the Republican Party to get serious about saving themselves from an unmitigated disaster.

Trump is a terrible nominee for Republicans in a general election. That has become abundantly clear as he's continued to alienate several voting blocs which are crucial to a viable campaign.

The GOP's biggest obstacle to overcoming the Trump phenomenon is that they simply haven't identified their alternative candidate. No single establishment candidate that could actually compete in a general election has emerged.

In Iowa, where the first contest will be held on February 1st, Senator Ted Cruz has begun to post small leads over Trump in polls. Although this may seem like good news for Republicans, the fact is that Cruz is one of the most extreme candidates in the race. He'd be nearly as damaging for Republicans as Trump in a hypothetical matchup with Hillary Clinton....

Blacks support Trump.

Hispanics who have legal status will support him when they realize they won’t have jobs if they don’t.

Middle class and working class white voters back him and are motivated to actually turn out.

Be careful when the left wants to ‘help’ you do anything.

The truth is they are scared to death of Trump and Cruz (Cruz to a lesser extent because he’d have to raise money).

The Uniparty is in full meltdown!

The huff po and Democratic Underground folks are all about Bernie. They think Clinton is a corporate bought sellout and not a true progressive. Seriously. Go look at them talk.

I venture onto Reddit in search of articles. I’m well aware of their Bernie Sanders fetish.

My heart cries out in happiness at the thought that the Huffington Post and some punk college kid in Maryland want to save the Republican Party from unmitigated disaster. To think they care so much for us brings tears of joy to me. /sarc

In other words, the libs are scared to death of a Trump/Cruz ticket. All the more reason for Trump and Cruz to form an alliance NOW.

.....”The truth is they are scared to death of Trump and Cruz (Cruz to a lesser extent because he€™d have to raise money)”.....

You got it backward....Hillary ‘wants’ Trump “featured” as the Republican candidate against her.....his corruption in his history will nullify hers.....Hillary's like Trump...both are speaking as if they are already Presidential Candidates running against one another....and the media will assist in that you can be sure.

The last man they want Hillary to debate is Cruz....he's got all the goods on her with details, and the establishment she's a part of.....further he knows how to use it against her..with facts and details of those facts.....she knows this as does the establishment.....Trump will just do the rump thing...call her a failure, mention Bengazi and other missteps we all already are aware of...while she creams hi, with sordid facts presented “Presidential”...not like some raving lunatic which Hillary will be well prepared to know what to say to set Trump off.........

Hillary would like nothing more than having, what Trump's considered by some, to be.. a “unhinged” candidate .. to show just how “Presidential” she will look by comparison..and her comments will be very measured and articulate in order to show the contrast between the two.

Cruz on the other hand can go head to head with Hillary...in fact nail her every defense.

The Big, Bad Trump will huffington and puffington AND blow your POST house down!

What voting blocs?.....thats the point...there are now NO traditional “voting blocs!” Everything HAS changed so there are no such voting blocs to BE alienated.

Trump is a fantastic nominee, and he has put the left’s internal erosion of the Republican party to a DEAD STOP!Thats why all the caterwauling.

Who cares if the left does not like TRUMP, the Republican nomineee, if they want a say they can join the Republican party.

OTHERWISE STFU !

I am inclined to think that battling Hill over details is a losing strategy: she will respond with effective obfuscation...and listeners will be lost...and no minds will change, in general.

On the other hand, she seems defenseless against just being called on her general stupidity. She will resolve to a losing food-fight exchange, call Trump a thug, resort to a battered-woman pity-party....and appear very weak as a result. Trump wins food-fights. A Hillery wiping fake tears from her eyes is a good thing for us! (Who know what a vicious being she is)

Just ruminatin’. I could be wrong.

especially from a source like HuffPo. Sounds like they're working for Hellary to confuse and diffuse the right's focus and split the vote to ensure her win. Sorry not falling for it fellas.

It won’t be about changing minds...she knows Trumps base isn’t going to move anymore than hers will....for Hillary it’s about drawing those voters who are undecided and sitting on the fence who she’s going to play to...be it using crocodile tears one week, or a Margret Thatcher come to mama the next...she’ll be playing to those who’s votes she’s focused at getting.... Trump will be just another stage prop to get her were she wants to be.

Remember this will be the “Clinton Machine” in full court mode...if push comes to shove they’ll have plenty of ammunition to fire at Trump and he doesn’t handle that “Presidentially”....thus the contrast between the two.

Why is it that people who hate the Republicans and conservative’s guts feel they are somehow qualified to give advice anyone would heed?

What is the downside? Either Trump beats the sniveling snot out of Hillary or the gop suffers an unmitigated disaster.

I don’t see ANY problem with either outcome.

So when Hillary responds with her nervous cackle as a way to deflect an uncomfortable question, is that acting "Presidentially"?

Cruz can surely out-debate Hillary every day of the week & twice on Sunday, but debates today (unfortunately) are all about the sizzle, not the steak.

People have known about Hillary for a long time - going back at least 25 years - they are already on to her phony crocodile tears act.

"conventional wisdom" - What Matt has and to him he's always right. He'll never tell his readers that they are his views. (in other stories it's his beliefs, affiliations, and religion)

"political pundits" - The Ms Cleo's of the 2017 election.

" Republicans" - Is more than one but sketchy details make me think he's speaking in the third person.

I pictured him hyper ventilating while he wrote this and I laughed and laughed.

I’m sure glad that the Huffington Post is so concerned about the Republican party, that they spend so much time telling them how to save themselves from that mean old Trump.

Currently, Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, John Kasich and Marco Rubio have a combined total of about 40% to Trump's 28%. Hypothetically, should two or three of these candidate drop out and perhaps even endorse one of the others, it might allow more moderate, establishment republican voters to coalesce behind one anti-Trump candidate.

Talk about a Hail Mary. Even if two or three candidates would drop out and endorse the remaining one, why would their supporters go to the remaining one?
