Steyn: Party Pooper
SteynOnline ^ | August 8, 2015 | Mark Steyn

On Friday night I swung by Sean Hannity's show on Fox News to chew over Thursday's GOP debates. You can see the video here.

We discussed Hillary Clinton's weakness re Bernie Sanders, and then moved on to the Republican side of things. The debate attracted an audience of 24 million people, the highest cable-news rating of all time, versus an audience of three-and-a-half million for the allegedly iconic Jon Stewart's farewell show (his second highest audience ever) and the highest non-sport cable rating in history.

Much of it was generated, presumably, by non-political types tuning in to check out frontrunner Donald Trump. Of course, much of the party doesn't accept him as a genuine "frontrunner". On Thursday, a lackluster Jeb Bush and Scott Walker, the Number 2 and 3, seemed to see themselves as the real frontrunners, playing it safe. I don't think that was a smart move, as I said to Sean:

"Donald Trump — you would have to drive a stake through him. So simply because no one did drive a stake through him, he survived, and therefore, he won. So he's still in the game and he's still locking down whatever it is, 25 percent, 32 percent I think it is in South Carolina now. So he's the guy to beat. I thought most of the others did well within their own terms, although they're actually quite narrow terms. And the disappointment, I think, was with the number two and number three because I think Jeb Bush and Scott Walker, in a sense, were both sitting on their non-leads. They both of them, I think, took a sort of conscious decision to kind of do a low-key don't-frighten-the-horses thing and hope that when Trump implodes, that they're still in the number two or number three slot....

Trump helps Cruz who I support. Trump can put an end to Jeb Bush and many of the other wimps in the race. If it wasn’t Trump taking the hits right now who do you think it would be? Who would the GOP-E be trying to convince everyone was the only real front runner we could ever need in all their sickening snarkiness?

God Bless Trump and if he really has come around to the conservative cause and he is welcome. He supported Reagan long ago but had shifted politically for some time but he’s not the first and I don’t believe the prodigal son must be shamed for his coming home. That said I don’t believe he is a plant as some are feeding a false flag concerning that. Trump has way too much ego for that anyway.

Hard to stand out when you are given about 1/2 the time of the so-called stand out. 40 minutes passed without Cruz getting a question.

Not hating on Trump because he did bring in an audience. However, personally, I’m getting Trump fatigue. We are facing
Serious problems in our country. We are going broke and our president is selling us down the road, along with our allies.
We have debt we cannot manage. We have illegals crawling over the border bringing disease and crime.
And yet.... folks are worried about Megyn Kelly and Trump.
Really!? Frankly, I don’t care about her and what she said.
I care about where our country is going.

I am not saying he can’t, but so far he hasn’t. If a Republican is to win this race, then he is going to have to CATCH FIRE, and I capitalized that, because it’s going to need to be a big damn fire.

Exactamundo. We need a disruptor. So far Trump is the only one to do it. Without a status quo disruptor every other electoral scenario leads to a progressive in the WH. Dem or GOP colors don’t really matter at this point since the Boehner/McConnell/Obama cartel has shown they are happy to advance the progressive agenda.

“Comments?”

I don’t get cable and our local radio “hosts” chose to discontinue Hannity’s radio program

(I couldn’t listen anyway... more commercials than content and really only seemed to have 10 coherent minutes per hour)

Mark hit this one out of the ballpark. The GOPe needs to be overturned & that’s a tall order considering how utterly corrupt it has become.

I think the party leaders know that they can’t buy or control Trump. He is therefore completely unacceptable. BTW, I think that they feel the same way about Cruz.

The problem is the GOP “leaders” and those who continue to put them in place. I would never have become a Republican as a young voter with the likes of John Boehner and McConnell running things.

Don’t you see that the media was just looking for something, anything to go at Trump with. It doesn’t matter, they would have found something on him no matter what, it was just a matter of which molehill they would make a mountain out of.

I love Mark Steyn. I would have his babies. Lots of them. Like litters of puppies.

Unless he started singing show tunes. Then the baby shop would close up and turn the lights off.

You are right. People looking at actual election 2016 right now need to know that Cruz is not a viable option for President. I love him. I’m still sending $. But he WILL NOT be the nominee. I think he would make a smart, wise, truly constitution loving conservative President. But he needs a HUGE, sorry, I mean YUGE, boost into that Oval Office. Being Veep would be the best path for him right now.

I care about where our country is going.

And so does this man!

In spite of being born in Canada, he's 100% American (the Boss has made that point quite clear plus, in an abundance of caution, he renounced his Canadian citizenship) and those of us here in the Lone Star State see that he's thoroughly Texan. When Governor Palin appeared to no longer be actively seeking the presidency, I went all in for Senator Cruz. He has what it takes to restore America on the Biblical core that the Founders set forth.

Yes, they did a hit job on him. We see that.

Everyone is worked up about it though in a very silly way.
Instead of considering and discussing serious issues
We’re rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
Trump wasn’t harmed. He has not lost support.
People seem to like him because he’s tough and yet they are worried sick about Megyn Kelly.
Everyone with a brain saw what was going on.
Can we move past it?

Obama has nearly wiped out all that had been accomplished by Reagan and even by the Gingrich congress post 1994 prior to GW Bush.

...

Sure, Obama is the point man, but it’s all going according to the GOPe’s plan since Reagan left office. Reagan was the exception and so was the election of 1994.

The GOPe simply wants to destroy anyone who wants an efficient and accountable government.

See, this is why he would be better off with me. I’d make one, maybe two red curly haired kids with him so there would be far more time for practicing having kids without having any more, see? And —— I can handle the show tunes too. I’d go to every musical that didn’t offend. So, maybe one or two a year. He could sing all the tunes. Every day.

So step aside, wench! ;)

OH, yes!!! I love me some Ted Cruz!

What a fine man he is. Principled, intelligent, knowledgeable, passionate, honest, focused...

He is the man we need, but I am not so sure we deserve him. After putting The America-Hating Dictator in the WH twice, allowing the evil perpetrated by Planned Parenthood to continue, after turning our back on our allies, God may rightfully have abandoned us.

I believe you may be correct. There is clearly an corporatist internationalist cabal. Call it the “new world order” or whatever a group of members of the political class that clearly aren’t interested in making America Great again as a sovereign nation.

I love me some Ted Cruz!

Although it would take some wrangling (pesky 12th Amendment), as his veep, there would be few better than Congressman Louie Gohmert -- solid Christian, military background and Aggie!

I might lean toward a dark horse coming out of nowhere. Like Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (NY). If you piled up the top twenty Iowa concerns (regular Democratic voters)....she’d be four-star on half of them. Being a female would be a plus, and she’s not as shrill as Hillary on speeches, and capable of thinking and reacting during debates.

It won’t be Biden....he’s got age issue and won’t be taken serious by half the voters.

He did do that, and he remains the candidate that I support, however, who in the country is speaking of that aside from me and you at this time?

Is that faith going to be the subject of Sunday shows and TV and radio shows into next week?

I don’t think it will be very sadly.

He has to find a way to shift large amounts of attention to himself if he expects to win.

Trump did this by speaking boldly about illegal immigration, and then a mere few days later, a lovely woman was killed by an illegal alien bastard, and the nation’s attention focused like a laser on him, and it’s still there.

Ted Cruz needs to find a way to connect himself to the energy that is currently animating voters.

If a politician cannot figuratively put his hand on the pulse of his base and determine what moves them and respond to that in a way that energizes people in his direction, then he is not likely to succeed.

Yes, it is a good thing that Ted loves Jesus, but that is not the issue that is going to win this election.
