Here are the politicians Donald Trump has 'bought'

Trump’s donations reveal a typical businessman looking out for his interests -- and what politicians can do to help him -- more than an ideologue backing like-minded candidates. He’s given money to New York-area politicians of both parties, for instance, including both of New York’s Democratic senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, as well as local Republicans such as New York Congressman Peter King. Trump gave a token $2,500 to the Romney presidential campaign during the 2012 election.

Scott Walker. Trump gave the Wisconsin governor $10,000 last year, when Walker was running for a second term. It seems to have helped, since Walker won. Still, it’s a tiny fraction of the $70 million or so Walker has raised during his five years as governor.

Mike Huckabee. In 2012, Trump gave $2,500 to the former Arkansas governor’s political-action committee, known as Huck PAC. As donations go, that’s a fairly small one.

Jeb Bush. Trump gave a mere $500 to Bush’s campaign in 2002, when Bush was governor of Florida. That’s not the kind of sum that gets you invited to the governor’s mansion.

Hillary Clinton. It’s certainly unusual that a presidential candidate of one party has donated money to a leading candidate of the other party. But Trump’s contributions to Clinton only total a modest $8,500. All of those donations came during Clinton’s tenure as senator from Trump’s home state of New York, from 2000 to 2009.

Until 2008 or so, Trump gave significant amounts of money to both Democratic and Republican causes, but during the last five years he’s turned sharply Republican. Since 2010, he’s given roughly $500,000 to Congressional committees that back Republicans and to third-party GOP groups such as American Crossroads. Some of those groups have probably given money, in turn, to Republican legislators Trump is now running against, though Trump likely has no say as to where that money goes.

One other group has pulled in a lot of money from Trump: Florida Republicans. But none of that has gone to former governor Jeb Bush or current Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. Instead, most of the money -- about $235,000 during the last four years -- has found its way to current Gov. Rick Scott.

When Hillary and Obama were battling for the nomination, lots of people gave her money and support who wouldn’t have otherwise. Rush even suggested “crossing over” to provide this false support to Hillary at that time and he called it “Operation Chaos”. Jeb’s brother had badly damaged the Republican brand. Those were desperate times.

Again, I find none of this unusual or surprising. Of all the candidates, ONLY “The Donald” can address the issue of this kind of bribery from the other side. I think that’s worth considering.

Ooh, Walker was pretty quiet when other candidates screamed: I didn’t take your money!

Nicely done Trump.

Objectively, I do not have a problem with Trump’s spending or buying if you will. Money equals free speech in my book. PACs give the little guy with little money a voice, so I do not buy into the argument that only the rich have a voice via money.

What needs to be examined is what, if anything did Trump get in return for his donations. I am no fan of crony capitalism, but given the sums involved it does not smell too badly for Trump; especially when compared to other businessmen/billionaires.

He also gave money twice to radical, left wing California AG, Kamala Harris.

Trump should outright state the truth—when a pol calls and asks for a donation and you refuse them, there is an unstated message that given the change, that pol would act against you.

Lots of companies, even if they lean politically one way, will designate one partner or senior executive to pay off pols from the party the company leadership doesn’t agree with. Banks, law firms, accounting firms, large manufacturers, etc., feel obligated not to let pols go away completely empty handed.

In short, they pay protection money.

I wish Trump would take the further step to describe that dynamic.

This is out of the Zer0 information voter handbook. It is a fact that a huge number of your fellow citizens does not know how the private sector runs their companies. Because we have a “broken” public sector with crony capitalism and socialism moving towards fascism, company owners pour in campaign contributions to buy favors. It should not be that way. However, regulations have most businesses over a barrel. They do what Trump has done. They play both sides of the fence because it is not about political ideology, it is about surviving the legislative landmines of regulation.

Trump sort of did that in the debate by saying, he donates so that if he needs them in the future, they will return his calls.

Trump has large business interests in California. It would be stupid for him to not be in AG Kamala Harris ‘s cross hairs. Trump is not stupid.

Yes, but the reality is actually worse than that. Company leaders feel compelled to donate so the pols won’t come after their business interests in some way.

Trump told it like it is.

Who were the other people on the stage with him? Anyone who’s ever started and run a business, made any significant money without shaking down the taxpayers?

That’s who and what they are. He’s not kidding. You don’t give all of them money, they come after you. The big corporations are scrupulous about splitting donations - it’s protection money. And maybe one day you call and they answer and you get a bit of help.

Corrupt? Hell yeah. But he just told it like it is. NOT ONE of those other people - except maybe Ted Cruz or Rand Paul - would admit that.

That is the way I look at it. Given what a politician in the right place or with the right contacts can do to someone’s business, anyone with a good business need to buy off the politicos most likely to interfere.
