Graham: Keeping Marriage Amendment In Party Platform Will Hurt GOP In 2016

Sen. Lindsey Graham told Meet the Press host Chuck Todd that the Republican party needs to finally hang it up when it comes to keeping a proposal for a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in their party platform, but that he made it clear they're not going to let it go as a wedge issue any time soon.

As long as they can keep the religious right whipped into a frenzy over whether their "liberties" are being violated by not being free to discriminate against a group of people they don't like, they're going to keep going after those votes.

Here's how Graham responded when asked about Ted Cruz hyperventilating over the weekend, saying he wants to add same-sex marriage bans, Supreme Court elections to Constitution.

GRAHAM: I don't believe there is any chance for a Constitutional amendment defining marriage between one man and one woman to get two thirds votes in the House and the Senate and be ratified by three fourths of the states.

TODD: Get it out of the platform?

GRAHAM: In my view, you can put it in the platform, but it will in my view hurt us in 2016 because it's a process that's not going to bear fruit. What I want to do is protect the religious liberties of those who believe that opposing same-sex marriage is part of their faith, so no, I would not engage in the Constitutional amendment process as a party going into 2016. Accept the court's ruling. Fight for the religious liberty of every American.

I won’t move on at all. The problem is that the left has been fighting for this for decades while people like you want to move on all the time and help the left.

The left is fighting and the “right” GOPe is accommodating them. Sorry FRiend, the generals on our side won’t fight and thus the battle is over.

It is no surprise that a liberal douche such as yourself would agree with Mrs. Graham.

I’m clapping. Well said. I am a practicing conservative Jew who is a lot closer to Orthodox than to the liberal reform Jew Lite version.

If you are a baker and your bakery loves to do weddings, show them, say, three wedding packages. Make all the cakes Christian with a cross or something and the bride and groom on top. If Adam and Steve come in, give them right away the number of a great gay baker. You only do these three wedding cakes. Period. This should be perfectly legal.

I wish I were a liberal douche. A. I’d be much happier tokay at all the judicial rulings and B. I’d feel fulfilled performing such a hygienic service for half the world.

Thank you. I was guessing as to your affiliation but that makes it clear. There is often so little understanding across religious divides. I am an old fashioned Catholic who attends only old Latin (Tridentine) Masses) and so I am somewhat analogous to Orthodox Jews in practice as a Catholic.

We all need to pull together before a new Iron Curtain rings down on us all.

May you and yours be blessed!

Thank you! While I have differences theologically, when I studied in France I used to get up early on Sunday mornings and go into the cathedral, one wall of which was even from the 11th century. The organ, the incense, the Latin.... It was so beautiful I came close to converting! :) I love Catholicism because it seems to take note, as Judaism does, of how earthy we people are and how we really do need our senses, our bodies, our ACTIONS, to play a part in how we worship. The words. The candles. Ect. And Catholicism in that traditional setting overwhelms the senses with love for Gd. Gd bless you too.

The GOP will never carry through with any law or amendment to reverse this damnable Supreme Court ruling so they might as well leave it out of their platform. Leaving it out means one less lie they are telling the public.

Anyone that caves in to the scumbags ruining this country deserves nothing but scorn. I meant every damn word of it.

ohioman:

Socially, you are an embarrassment to those of us who will continue to fight against perversion posing as "marriage." Colorful language is one thing. Purposeful offense to a fellow FReeper who disagrees on strategy but not on goals is quite another thing.

The shame is that you are right on the strategy and terribly counterproductive on your personal tactics. Feel free to have the last word or not as you see fit.

If you do see fit, then perhaps you will explain how your rudeness and "scorn" toward an errant ally such as Yaelle will contribute to the achievement of putting a stop to the ongoing situation in which vile perversions pose as "marriage" and how alienating your errant ally helps us to convert those who hold opinions opposite to our own. If you will not persuade your allies, how will you persuade our opponents?

What a fine post! The late Jean-Marie Cardinal Lustiger must have had a similar experience leading to his conversion. I have had similar experiences attending Bar Mitzvahs of the sons of friends.

You are the embarrassment. I will never stop fighting and could care less if I hurt your feelings. The time for nice is over. I would say the same to Ohio Governor john kasich who has already bent over backwards to the fag agenda. I will make my language more colorful next time if you like.
