Sen. Lindsey Graham told Meet the Press host Chuck Todd that the Republican party needs to finally hang it up when it comes to keeping a proposal for a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in their party platform, but that he made it clear they're not going to let it go as a wedge issue any time soon.
As long as they can keep the religious right whipped into a frenzy over whether their "liberties" are being violated by not being free to discriminate against a group of people they don't like, they're going to keep going after those votes.
Here's how Graham responded when asked about Ted Cruz hyperventilating over the weekend, saying he wants to add same-sex marriage bans, Supreme Court elections to Constitution.
GRAHAM: I don't believe there is any chance for a Constitutional amendment defining marriage between one man and one woman to get two thirds votes in the House and the Senate and be ratified by three fourths of the states.
TODD: Get it out of the platform?
GRAHAM: In my view, you can put it in the platform, but it will in my view hurt us in 2016 because it's a process that's not going to bear fruit. What I want to do is protect the religious liberties of those who believe that opposing same-sex marriage is part of their faith, so no, I would not engage in the Constitutional amendment process as a party going into 2016. Accept the court's ruling. Fight for the religious liberty of every American.
I hear Graham’s new cookbook includes 30 recipes for sausage stuffing.
Why are you on a conservative site?
I am on a conservative site because I am deeply conservative.
Sure. Abandoning a pillar of conservatism. Marriage is highly conservative. How did I miss such an obvious truth?
Remove it from the platform. The government should not be in the business of legislating morality.
It’s over, Norm. We lost. We did it wrong. They used subtle propaganda and won hearts and minds. They used alinsky mocking and polarizing, and made everyone scared to death to be called homophobic. They fight better.
We’d be smarter to move to what counts far more, putting RELIGIOUS FREEDOM FOR ALL onto the platform.
Your attitude is why we lost this round. And will lose the war. Your liberal attitude. Because when we lose rebellious freedom you’ll just say “It’s over Norm” and move on to something else to cave in on just like your GOP handlers.
Lindsey, get lost....I don’t give a f—k what you think.
I don’t have a liberal attitude except in the truest original sense of the word. Preserving freedom.
Presidential politics needs tact and powerful influence. Yes, emotional, maybe even some of the tactics we lost to. Maybe we need more mocking and a bit more subliminal media saturation. We were talking only about removing the marriage goal from our platform as to all low info voters, this is over.
Be real. How to attract more votes to beat the other side. (If we actually have a conservative nominee, that is.) that is all this is about. It isn’t wimping out on every fight. Our platform should attract the many who are upset, hurt, and feeling like the country left them behind.
They won’t be attracted by a blurb that looks like we haven’t dusted it off since 1992. We need to update it to our fight TODAY. I don’t know best how to word it, but it needs to be something like “Our country was founded on JudeoChristian principles and we believe in preserving the right to practice religion in peace. Or something.
Of course not. It’s perfectly conservative to say one day after a 5000 year old institution is eliminated that we should just move on.
On DU.
Linda is probably waiting his turn to “get married”. Of course he wants to change the platform. A ‘wider stance’ will suit him just fine.
It is way past the time that someone punched Lindsey Graham’s mouth in.
You don’t like my platform idea? Respond with what you think it should be.
As is and enforced. Which is the whole point of having a party platform. Core principles. Not musical chairs.
Yeah...especially since they're too busy legislating immorality.
See? Lesser evil works!
I believe Yaelle is an Orthodox Jew. While I don't think any more than you do about his idea for the platform and agree with you that the platform be kept the same and ENFORCED against the errant legislators, etc., Yaelle posted something elsewhere which was quite worthy of our attention.
The Orthodox Jews have long since learned to "circle the wagons" and repel outside threats. Yaelle said that if you go into a Kosher Delicatessen and demand a ham sandwich, the management will simply say: "We don't carry ham but here is the address of a Polish delicatessen that does. You will be happier there."
Draw analogies to "gays" demanding to be married at St. Patrick's Cathedral by Cardinal Dolan or anywhere by Franklin Graham or in Brooklyn by a Lubavitcher (Chassidic) rabbi. "We don't really have a ritual for that but there is a 'Metropolitan''Church' (or UCC or UMC or ELCA) right across town that might accommodate you."
If that does not thwart this trend, refuse to apply for marriage licenses from government any more since marriage was none of its infernal business in the first place and since government obviously no longer understands the meaning of the word marriage. Remember the scene in Braveheart when William Wallace marries his wife Murrin in the woods before a priest, triggering no notice to the local Brit poobah and therefore refusing the poobah the "right" of First Night or Prima Nocte with her? That was under the rule of an allegedly "Christian" Brit tyranny that enshrined mandatory adultery in law OR ELSE.
We must learn from the Orthodox Jews to circle the wagons while we establish our underground resistance.
We shall obey God and not these heathens.
We must also educate our own children in our homes and according to our standards and morals and knowledge of history.
Our organizations and associations are OUR business and none of the government's business.
Above all, we must stop the comfy pretense that this is still the government that served our fathers and grandfathers going back to the Founders.
I don’t care if he’s from Mars. He wants us to move on. Thats complete crap. And that attitude is why we keep losing. Because everyone just says ‘oh well’ and moves on. They know they will move on if things get tough so why fight?
I’m not feeling a lot of confidence in a guy that says one thing one moment and another the next. Will he move on when he loses the wagon circle too?
I won’t move on at all. The problem is that the left has been fighting for this for decades while people like you want to move on all the time and help the left.
I tend to agree with you. I think that, if the votes are there, Congress should promptly remove ALL SCOTUS and other federal court jurisdiction over abortion, marriage and school prayer, just for starters.
