Bernie Sanders makes the pitch for free college tuition
MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show ^ | May 19, 2015 | Steve Benen

Even Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) most ardent supporters would probably concede, albeit grudgingly, that he faces very long odds in the 2016 presidential race. So why run? Because there’s value in having a national platform for bold, progressive ideas that might otherwise be ignored.

Bloomberg Politics reported yesterday, for example, on Sanders’ new plan to make public college tuition-free in the United States.

The plan will provide tuition-free higher education to students at four-year colleges, the statement said, and is modeled after the way many European nations handle the costs of college.

“Countries like Germany, Denmark, Sweden and many more are providing free or inexpensive higher education for their young people,” Sanders said in the statement. “They understand how important it is to be investing in their youth. We should be doing the same.”

That point about overseas examples is no small detail. The more the United States invests in an educated workforce, the greater our competitiveness on the international stage. There’s no better way to guarantee America’s role as a 21st-century superpower than lowering the barriers to higher education.

And if major economies like Germany can make tuition at public colleges free, there’s no reason the United States can’t, too. So what’s the next step?[continued]

Yes, we need more professional college students and taxpayers forced to pay for them.

That has been considered seriously, including by some conservative economists. I guess I’m pretty stupid. I can’t figure a way it could work.

This country needs an enema in the form of a good old fashioned tax revolt.

How about “affirmative action” for a “fair and balanced” academia?

““Countries like Germany, Denmark, Sweden and many more are providing free or inexpensive higher education for their young people,”

Then move to the Euroweenie country of your choice. Effing libtards, always the hard-on’ with Europe and their Euroweenie ways.

Bernie Sanders has one job: to make Hillary Clinton look less radical to White middle class voters.

Free subsidized tuition for women, race and gender studies majors. Now that's a great national investment!

I did some quick math and if we lowered our spending on the military as a percentage of GDP comparable to Germany, we’d save approximately 450 billion dollars a year.

Maybe Germany can afford to let kids take up space in college for free because we protect their whole continent from multiple enemies and have done so for what seems like forever.

We’re not really investing in our youth and the future of our country unless his proposed system is pure merit. No need considerations or other stuff like legacy kids and affirmative action. I could almost vote for him if that’s what he proposes.

The Democrats will never give him their line in New York State in addition to his own party label, even though that is doable here as most know. So he could possibly draw from the Dem base. Won’t really matter. His whole candidacy is a bit surreal.

Yeah. Send our lazy leeches there for free and we get the frauleins in exchange. College isn’t for everyone. I don’t also remember reading “free education for all” in the Bill of Rights. Then again, the leftards come up with their insane interpretations of the BOR, especially the 2nd one..

It works if the best and the brightest go to college and the rest don’t.

I was 26 and driving a cab. Aunt noticed state giving 4k towards computer training for unemployed or underemployed. Four of us showed up. I took Microsoft Office and typing, got into a presentations center and onto graphics later on.
The govt got more than that 4k in taxes my fist year working. That’s an investment.
My college degree in mgmt., not so much.

When Big Government makes higher education free, look out. They will determine which student will get the free education and the course of study they will take. Just like the old Soviet system.
