Conservative group to audition Republican candidates for 2016

A group of conservative activists will meet privately next month in suburban Washington to hear from potential Republican presidential candidates and determine who among them to support, a Republican involved in the effort said on Monday.

Many conservatives want one of their own as the 2016 Republican presidential nominee and would prefer to avoid establishment candidates such as former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who is expected to seek the nomination.

The session at a hotel in Tyson's Corner, which is in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, will take place on May 15 and 16, according to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Organizing the effort is the Council for National Policy, which includes representatives from a variety of conservative activist organizations.

The group will hear from those who are either in the 2016 race already or thinking about it, such as Texas Senator Ted Cruz. The list was still being developed, the source said....

Well, I certainly hope their support coalesces around Ted Cruz. I don’t know who all the members are but some of the names I’ve heard are true conservatives. I’ve also heard that Trent Lott (he who has sold his soul to K Street special interests) is a member and THAT does not bode well.

We’ll see, I guess.

I don’t think we gain much if a secret group of conservatives chooses who’s the best candidate for us. Let the candidates have at it for awhile, see who the most honest conservative is.

“...Let the candidates have at it for awhile, see who the most honest conservative is.”

We’ve done that....every four years. It hasn’t worked well as a strategy and works well with the GOPe strategy of splitting the conservative primary vote.

I just don’t trust a closed meeting of so-called conservatives deciding who’s best for us little folk. At the onset, it might be real good in the debates to see who gangs up against Jeb. Anyone who won’t isn’t really on our side, whatever their rhetoric.

Well, many on this website, complained after the GOP candidate was selected in 2008 and 2012, that the 6 or 7 Conservatives demolished each other in the Primaries and the Debates and the “lone Establishment candidate” waltzed to the Coronation. So, this might be a good thing. But, if they do this, I’d like to see a consensus on, NOT JUST ONE, but at least 2, maybe 3, Conservative candidates and let them, in a civil and respectful manner, vie for the nomination.

If Mississippian Trent Lott, one of the major players in helping Thad Cochran steal the election from Chris McDaniel, does serve on this “Auditioning Committee”, that will totally null and void their credibility and they can kiss my butt on both sides.

I agree...Trent Lott is one of those duplicitous “smiling faces” that will stab you in the back whenever it advances one of his interests. He also somehow manages to worm his way into groups such as this. Hopefully he’ll have next to none or no influence whatsoever after the group takes his money.

If CHristy does not run, Jeb Bush wins by dividing conservative voters. Repeat of 2012.

I think this ranks being re-posted. Nice development.

The National Journal account made it sound “secretive”, not simply private. But, admittedly I never heard of it myself. Apparently they have met before and have moved up their selection process due to the early candidate contest already waging now.

This is a good thing, yes?
