Santorum Dismisses Rand Paul’s 2016 Prospects: ‘The Republican Party Is Not A Libertarian Party’

Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum dismissed Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul’s 2016 presidential ambitions, claiming “the Republican Party is not a libertarian party” and suggesting few GOP voters would be swayed by Paul’s small government message.

Santorum swiped at the senator Monday during an appearance on CNN’s “Crossfire,” where he told left-wing host Van Jones that Republicans “need a positive agenda” to win in 2014 and 2016.

“So positive agenda,” Jones replied. “Rand Paul, who now seems to be everywhere. He’s the frontrunner in your party. Do you agree with his ideas, are you going to support Rand Paul?”

“Well looking, as I said before, there’s diversity in the Republican Party . . . ” Santorum ventured cautiously.

But Van Jones pressed on, asking if Paul is “the new face of the Republican Party? Is this your leader?”

“Well — no he’s not MY leader, I can tell you that for sure,” Santorum laughed. “His father and I had some disagreements during the last campaign.”

“If a libertarian like him becomes the leader of the Republican Party — gets the nomination — would you vote for them?” Jones continued.

“Well first off, I don’t think that will happen,” Santorum claimed, “because the Republican Party is not a libertarian party, it is a conservative party....

First, why would you appear on a television show with Van Jones? Second, I don't have a dog in this fight. I want neither Rick Santorum or Rand Paul as our nominee.

Santorum is a light-weight. He could not even keep his Senate seat in his home state. He is a dingy sailing among the battleships.

Having said that, Santorum needs to review Reagan's 11th Commandment.

‘The Republican Party Is Not A Libertarian Party’

I'll say! Hell, they're not even conservative, so libertarian would be quite a stretch.

Totally agree about appearing with Van Jones. Conservatives have to start treating avowed commies like Nazi sympathizers. The crimes are even worse.

That being said, the Republican Party is not supposed to be a libertarian party... but it isn’t a conservative party right now either.

Maybe we should call it like it is...a party vying for power without a goal. They seem to be looking for voters instead of goals, except for their party but not for America.

That of course means that we have two parties fighting for power without any concern for the individual American. Isn’t that a hoot! Government at its best - Tax and spend and give for you vote!

Santorum was not loyal to the establishment or grassroots with his wage increase talk. He must have known what the headlines would say.

If we block amnesty for now, Bill Kristol and the Super PACs might attack Rand on immigration.

Santorum is as bad as Paul on immigration. Paul just has stupid ideas but is hated by the donors. The donors might decide to pull back on amnesty for a year or two and then use it to attack Rand either in 2016 or 2020 primary depending on the timing.

I thought Rick thought Republicans were Racists?

Is being a Racist better than being a Libertarian?

Can’t keep up with this loser.

You can’t mix the libertarians in with the conservatives and Reaganites, if you did, then you would be trying to label Rand Paul as a conservative, rather than the mushy, weak rino that he is.

Rick Santorum has always been establishment, from his Reagan mocking early politics, to his becoming anti-abortion when he decided to run for office in 1990, to his campaigning for ‘Specter for President’ to remove life from the GOP platform, to his lifelong devotion to Specter, to his Romney becoming a Romney supporter.
