Gone is the sunny, compassionate candidate of 2008. In the run-up to 2016, the former Arkansas governor is downright angry. Hes learned his lesson from his last campaign, ex-aides say.
In 2007, Mike Huckabee stood impassively on a Republican presidential debate stage while Mitt Romney tried to embarrass him. A program that Huckabee had instituted in Arkansas gave undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children the right to in-state tuition at Arkansass public universities.
Huckabee sounded, Romney said, like a Massachusetts liberal. Are we going to give taxpayer-funded benefits to kids that are here illegally and put them ahead of kids that are here legally? he asked.
Huckabee explained that the kids who benefitted were brought to the U.S. as children, that they had spent all their young lives in Arkansass public schools, and that, in many cases, they had excelled. He alluded to his own storygoing to work at 14 as a local radio host, working his way through Ouachita Baptist University in two and half years.
Let me finish, Mitt, he said when the former Massachusetts governor tried to interject. In all due respect, we are a better country than to punish children for what their parents did. Were a better country than that.
It was one of the more remarkable moments of the 2008 campaign. Here was a presidential contender not pandering to an anti-immigrant crowd but shaming his party and, for that matter, his nationto be better. Rare is the candidate who cuts against the grain of party orthodoxy; rarer still is one who uses the campaign to educate and persuade the public....

However, charging then out of state tuition is not much a disincentive, because they already came here when instate tuition wasn't available to them. And if it's not enough to be a disincentive, then it's only purpose is to oppress them. To make them a lower class.
The main problem I have with your solution, is it doing the very thing God said not to do.
Israel started off as guests in Egypt and were oppressed until the point that they were made slaves. Incrementally small steps of oppression will do the same things to the illegals.
I see no scriptural prohibition to keeping the stranger out of our land. But there is one to allowing him to be among us and oppressing him.
Either deport him or treat him right.
Living in a state for 10 years and paying property taxes and sales tax should entitle an illegal to send their kids to state colleges for instate tuition.
The question becomes moot the moment America is willing to deport them. If we don't deport them,we have to treat them right.
A middle ground of letting them stay and oppressing them is forbidden.
Bought and paid for by Tyson, etc.
And that goes for the companies that hire them.
“is it doing the very thing God said not to do.”
Go play somewhere else. My daughter was born and raised in the US. She made the horrible choose of going to a school that was different than the one she was raised in. The consequence of that was that she was charged out of state tuition.
Your logic is based on some ill conceived theological reasoning. How very liberal of you. I am sure that the church thinks you are terrific. I am sure Nancy Pelosi thinks you are terrific.
You want to treat eery one the same??? Then go live in a communist nation where everyone other than the leader is treated like dirt. Here in the US we have laws. Charging these miscreants and their offspring out of state tuition is the LEAST we can do
This article only reconfirms that I would never support Huck for president.
Indeed, but we don't have elected politians willing to enforce the laws. I'm all for enforcing the current immigration laws and deporting the illegals.
But the very question of instate vs out-of-state tuition implies that the immigration laws won't be enforced. And if the existing laws won't be enforced, then I am for new laws that don't oppress the illegals.
I'm more in favor of enforcing laws like that. The problem that occurs when you start winking at companies that hire illegals, is that they drive the law abiding companies out of business.
It's like off-shoring. Once your competition does it, you have no choice but to do likewise and cut your costs, or go out of business.
So your family paid taxes to one state, but she choice college in another state and had to pay out of state tuition.
The illegals in question have also paid taxes to one state, but they aren’t choosing college in another state. They are choosing college in the state where they lived for years and paid taxes.
I don't know. Courts of law might well view our actions or lack of action as an implied contract.

Why do you only quote part of what I have said. The existing laws are ENFORCED and it is to the detriment of other US citizens ( which these folks are not).
Take you libertarian I don’t give a rip attitude some where else. Perhaps Barbara Boxer has a job to offer you. I don’t care if ILLEGALS (who by definition are law breakers and don’t respect our laws) aren’t treated in a way that makes you feel warm and fuzzy. They are not ‘strangers’ in a strange land....they are robbers and thieves and murderers.
Don’t bother to reply.
You cannot show that the ILLEGALS (who by the way have NO right to work here and are most likely paid under the table) have paid anything other than sales taxes.
Go pound sand. Your idea of national sovereignty is lacking. I am sure the ever so wonderful liberal catholic caucus will gladly accept you into their midst
The immigration laws are not enforced or there wouldn’t be any illegals to worry about what tuition rate they are going to get.
Take your name calling back to DU. I’m neither a libertarian nor a liberal. Unless you think paying attention to scripture makes one a liberal. But if so then you better read the qualifications for this site, this isn’t the site for you if you take scripture lightly.
We can argue about what policy makes sense, or what scripture means. But I would appreciate it if you used a lot more logic and a lot less name calling.

Unless they are living in a bus, they are paying property taxes or they are paying rent to a property owner who pays property taxes.
We don't have state income tax in TN, so only property taxes and sales tax are relevant to a state tuition subsidy.
But most states do have income taxes, and you might be right about income taxes. But I thought most of the illegals are working under stolen SSA # and fake ID's, and not being paid under the table. And thus they would be paying income taxes too.
Yeah. And if the parents robbed a bank and the kids lived an affluent life style, should the kids be punished by giving the money up when the parents are conviceted? Those poor kids...it wasn't them who broke the law.
What's the difference? The kids should be EMBARRASSED AND ASHAMED that their parents stole from the US and violated our laws. They should return to their homelands, realizing that the education they already had and weren't entitled to is something they will benefit from for their whole lives.
