Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL) told host Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that supporters of new gun control legislation do not yet have the votes to pass it, despite defeating a Republican-led filibuster attempt last week.
Durbin is the Senate Majority Whip, responsible for counting his party's votes on key legislative proposals.
The specific bill facing the Senate is the Manchin-Toomey compromise on background checks, which would expand such requirements to gun shows, among other provisions. Currently, private sales between individuals at gun shows do not require background checks--just as private sales anywhere do not require them.
The following is a rough transcript of Sen. Durbin's remarks in a joint appearance with Minority Whip Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX):
Wallace: Senator Durbin, you and Senator Cornyn, as the Whips in the Senate, are the vote counters, the guys who know whether or not there are enough votes. Are there enough votes when this comes up this week for you to pass the Manchin-Toomey compromise on expanded background checks?
Durbin: I think John will concede Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania is one of the mot conservative members of the Republican caucus and Joe Manchin, the most conservative of the Democratic caucus. The two have a proposal supported by 90% of the people in America, supported by 75% of the members of the National Rifle Asociation. I hope the 16 Senators [Republicans who broke the filibuster attempt] and even more will step up and join this approach to make sure that the background checks extend beyond where they are today to reach the 40% of firearms sold--
Wallace: Do you have the votes?
Durbin: We haven't whipped it. When it gets down to it we have to ask, should we try to keep guns out of the hands of felons....

Richard Durbin (D-IL) demonstrates just how STUPID DEMOCRAT voters are!
It's hard to say who is the most stupid, the people of Illinois or the people who elected and continue to reelect Feinstein & Boxer.
Wonder who they shall buy next.
Time to get out the FBI files for blackmailing, bribery, and extortion for votes.. The ONLY way they know: The OBAMACARE WAY!!
With the ILLEGAL ALIEN IN CHIEF’s criminals running the so-called justice system, the only way to stop these people, is to bury them.
They may have to pull out all the stops and get John Kerry to roll out his booze barge.
They don't have the votes-yet!
They will make some more deals and get the votes.
Hang the mobster.
the constitution is not up for debate, dickless. durbin, not poster.
We need to ask if Durban is in favor of turbans....
Translation: More booze and noogie to come on the Manchin party barge.
How many times we heard this ‘story’ before?
And yet, here we are. (sorry, Edna Mole)
One traitorous bill after another.
Oh, they’ll have the votes when the time comes. The only question is how much those votes will cost.
Turban Durbin, trade your turban for a dunce cap.
Of course they do
On today's MJ Mike Allen from politico reported that McConnell plans on loading down the Senate Gun BG check bill with poison pill amendments designed to get the Senate Dems to ask Reid to pull the bill rather than have to vote on it, plus there are some vunerable Dems in the Senate worried about 2014.
He said the chances of a background check bill passing is 40% (<50%) even though libs were celebrating last weeks vote to get it on the floor. Morning Joe had a fit over that, keeps repeating how Republicans will lose in 2014 if they dont support Obama's gun control.
Allen said that immigration has a much higher 60% chance of passing Senate, thanks to Rubio.
16 replies so far and your the only one from Illinois. Can we get some signs up and around the state? My suggestion:
LET’S GET THE GOVERNMENT OUT
