The controversy over the abortion-rape comments made by Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin appear to be hurting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Whereas Rasmussen polling showed Romney leading pro-abortion President Barack Obama at the end of July and having Romney leading the race in the Show Me State all year, now Obama has the lead.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Missouri Voters finds President Obama with 47% support to Romney’s 46%. Three percent (3%) favor some other candidate in the race, and three percent (3%) more are undecided. At the end of July, Romney led by six percent and he has not trailed Obama in any Rasmussen poll all year.
“As the controversy over Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin’s “legitimate rape” comment continues, Mitt Romney’s lead in Missouri has vanished,” Ramussen says. “Missouri now moves from Leans Romney to a Toss-Up in the Rasmussen Reports Electoral College Projections.”
“Obama’s Democratic support in the state remains largely unchanged at 96%, and voters not affiliated with either major party still favor Romney by 20 points. But Republican support in Missouri for the party’s likely nominee has fallen from 94% in late July to 85% now,” Rasmussen continues.
In 2008, John McCain won Missouri on a slight 49.4% to 49.3% margin. Since then, Rasmussen now shows 48% of voters in the state now approve of the job Obama is doing as president, while 49% disapprove. This includes 26% who Strongly Approve versus 42% who Strongly Disapprove. Fifty-one percent (51%) have a favorable opinion of Romney, while 47% regard him unfavorably. This includes Very Favorables of 24% and Very Unfavorables of 27%.
“As for their running mates, 44% view Vice President Joe Biden favorably, but 50% have an unfavorable opinion of him. He earns Very Favorables of 19% and Very Unfavorables of 36%,” Rasmussen notes. “Ryan is seen favorably by 50% and unfavorably 40%, with Very Favorables of 34% and Very Unfavorables of 29%.”
Meanwhile, Akin now trails pro-abortion Sen. Claire McCaskill by ten percent in Missouri’s U.S. Senate race, Rasmussen polling shows, as he has refuses called from leading Republicans and conservatives to step aside so another candidate can take his place as the U.S. Senate nominee.
The survey of 500 Likely Voters in Missouri was conducted on August 22, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
If anything, I'd say the drop in GOPer support from 94% to 85% indicates that, presumptive nominee or not, Romney is not doing it for the rank-and-file Republican base.
Let's not forget, Todd Akin isn't the only gaffemeister in the Republican Party. Captain Etch-a-Sketch has his share as well, despite his quality-controlled campaign.

I guess that explains Akin’s huge drop in the latest poll in Missouri. He now trails By 10 when he previously enjoyed a huge lead.

I think this analogy would work here: People may think you vote stupidly so please don’t vote and remove all doubt.
I cannot believe some are this crazy to vote for O because some senate candidate made the mistake whopper of the year. By his comment, Akin shows he was never ready for prime time. Romney was not ready for this asshat taking down his election chances.
Mckaskill was road kill till he opened his mouth...now we have to rehabilitate his campaign or find a substitute to have a shot at getting O out of the lead. Neither is a viable choice IMO.
This one could be a twofer, the death party gets the presidency and keeps the senate over this dumbass’s comment with the supreme court to follow. This is big time politics here folks and we are losing.

With the national conversation now turning to women’s issues as a result of the bizarre and offensive comments by Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, it seems a bit odd that Vice President Biden would take the stage with Franken, considering his own lack of sensitivity to the horrors of rape. Frankin thinks rape is hilarious.
So, where is the liberal media on this? Frankin, being a democrat (and using their own propaganda against them) says Oboma thinks rape is something to laugh and joke about. Where is the outrage against Oboma?
So true. FReepers are without a doubt the most informed political junkies in the country. It's easy to forget that.
Even my family members (non-FReepers) who are political conservatives are often surprised by the "new" information I give them regarding issues and candidates of the day.
And, yes, I keep referring them to this site, but for some reason, they haven't managed to find the initative to look it up.
Their loss. But at least they're conservatives.

The non-thinking tribalism of so many conservatives because Akin is "one of us." Reminds me of the way the Democrats deal with Joe Biden.
Here you have a guy who was the favourite candidate of the Democrats, who still want him in the race, and who actually gave lots of money to his campaign back in the primary - and FReepers are supporting him.
