Washington Post Blog: Newt Gingrich’s general election prospects look bleak
Washington Post ^ | 12/15/2011 | by Aaron Blake and Chris Cillizza

Posted on 12/15/2011 12:29:08 PM PST by SeekAndFind

If former House Speaker Newt Gingrich manages to win the Republican presidential nomination, he could jeopardize his party’s chances of ousting President Obama next November, according to several new national polls released this week.

Surveys from the NBC News and the Wall Street Journal, AP/GfK and Reuters/Ipsos all show former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney running better than Gingrich in general election matchups against Obama.

“Electability will come into play for many Republican votes,” said one neutral GOP consultant who preferred to speak anonymously. “It’s going to become problematic. I think you’re starting to signs of it.”

The NBC/WSJ and AP/GfK polls show Gingrich trailing Obama by 11 percent and 9 percent in the general election, respectively, while Romney trails the president by just 2 percent and 1 percent, respectively.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll shows a smaller but still notable difference, with Romney trailing by 8 percent and Gingrich by 13 percent.

But wait, there’s more.

Polling from the Washington Post and ABC News shows Gingrich’s personal favorable numbers are not good among potential general election voters. More problematic is that Gingrich’s approval numbers have actually gotten worse, even as he has risen rapidly in the GOP primary.

In the WaPo/ABC poll, Gingrich has a 35 percent overall favorable rating and a 48 percent unfavorable rating. (The Post’s crack polling team notes that his unfavorable rating has risen by 6 percent in the last two weeks.)

The problem appears to be Gingrich’s appeal — or lack thereof — among independents. But he’s also got problems among Republicans.

If I’m not mistaken Ronald Reagan was running about 20 points behind Carter at some points during the summer of 1979. The point being that claiming someones prospects are “bleak” based on a poll 11 months before an election is laughable at best.

Very important point and I’m sure you are right. We need to Google this and get the facts in hand.

Or maybe we can get lucky and some smart Freeper already has the polling data for the run-up to the 1980 election.

Whatever the WaPo suggests, do the opposite.

Go Newt!

Reagan, unlike Gingrich didn’t have that damnable Faux-Romney-News tearing him down 24/7 on nearly every single broadcast.

Earlier today, I watched Megyn Kelly announce a shakeup in the latest polls showing Newt tanking to 3rd and 4th place with Romney at the top and way ahead of Newt..

While seeing his numbers come down concerns me, I think what bothered me most was how Kelly began the “breaking news”. The first words out of her mouth were, “THANK GOD”.... she was excited and giddy.

I have so had it with Fox News....

Whoever the GOP nominates will garner over 300 EV’s which is quite enough to win as I remember.

This could just as easily been written by FOX or the American Standard. The echo chamber never changes only the names of the parrots.

Newt’s been the MSM’s fair-haired boy for two weeks or more — just like Cain and Perry before him. Now, right on schedule, they’ll tear him down. At this point, it’s obvious they’re just yanking our chains because they get a kick out of it.

I view it differently. I believe a general election will not be held because the dictator is going to do something that will cancel the election. Just watch.

Isn’t it nice when Newsp[apers tthat are supposed to report the news, take sides and tell us who we should vote for?

Yes If Newt is the candidate we may lose.
If Romeny is the Candidate we will lose
If paul is the Candidate I won’t even go to the polls, and Santorum and Bachman have as much chance as an out of fuel airplane staying in the air indefinitely.

Here is flashback to 1980...anything sound familiar lmao.

“For
Release: Monday AM,
March 10th,
1980”

ABC News Harris Survey

“When pitted against President Carter among a cross section of 1,498 likely voters, Ford runs ahead by a 54-44 percent margin. By contrast, among the same voters, Reagan trails Carter by 58-40 percent. Back in late November, at the start of the Iranian hostage crisis, Carter was ahead of Ford by 50-47 percent. Back then, Carter led Reagan by 53-44 percent. However, just a month ago, Carter led Reagan by a wider 64-32 percent, indicating some slippage in the President’s strength over the past 30 days.”

“These results bear out what Gerald Ford has claimed: that the polls would show him to be much more popular with the voters than Ronald Reagan. Significantly, he is ahead among just Republican voters, Republicans and independents, and in the contest with Carter he is running 14 points better than Reagan. The latest ABC News -Harris Survey, conducted by telephone nationwide among 1,498 voters, was conducted from March 5th
through 8th.”

Yes this is the same sort of stuff that was thrown at Reagan too radical to be elected and so on, we ‘needed’ a moderate like Bush on Dole to beat Carter.

This will be different in the sense that Reagan had 1 divorce no 2, so the personal stuff hurled at Gingrich will be intense. he has done what he can to diffuse that. However ths will be a gutter campaign since Obama can’t run on his record.

Man...this week has been rough...let’s get through Iowa already...

Substitute all of the recent articles against Newt and insert Cain about 5 weeks ago, then insert Romney or Paul during the next three to four weeks, if they leap in front of Newt...

We’re just a bunch of fickle individuals, easily guided by the news to where they want us to go...

Obama and his $billion hasn’t even started kicking in yet...

He’ll win by default...

I’m not hopefull for a Republican executive; however, we better not give up the majority in the house, and we better win majority in the Senate, or we are toast...

We need to Google this and get the facts in hand.

No need to google it. Reagan's poor polling numbers vs Carter in the 1980 election are legendary, and well known to most political junkies.

I've seen the facts about that posted here too many times to count.
