Publisher Steve Forbes says he has no trepidation in backing Rick Perry for president, despite his low poll numbers, because the presidential race remains fluid. Forbes who ran for president twice himself also told CNNs Wolf Blitzer Tuesday that he has no trouble with Perrys occasional gaffes, as the Texas governor comes across much better in person.
I think this race has proved it is a very fluid situation and already Newt Gingrich is starting to get some of the flak that every temporary front-runner seems to get, Forbes said. So I think this is going to be a long contest and I think Rick Perry has an excellent chance to move up to the middle between [Mitt] Romney and whats happening with Newt Gingrich.
So I dont think this thing is over at all it is very volatile, he said. I think the real sparks are still yet to come in January and February.
Blitzer asked whether Perrys so-called brain freeze and other gaffes have had any impact on Forbes early decision to back the Texas governor.
No, Ive known Rick Perry since over 10 years ago when he first became governor and put in some excellent reforms to their legal system in Texas especially against tort lawyers, Forbes said. And so hes much better came across much better in person than he did in those early debates....

Steve Forbes Says Perry Has ‘Chance to Move Up’
“Comments?”
Two:
1.Snowball.
2.Hell.
Forbes wants Perry to wound Gingrich in Iowa so Romney can have a bigger victory in Newt Hampshire.
Three comments:
1. NO
2. WAY
3. OOOPS
If there is somebody who knows something about winning a political campaign, it’s Steve Forbes........
I hope he’s right. Perry is a strong constitutional conservative and I would love to see him move up to challenge Mitt and Newt—especially Mitt, but I don’t think he will draw from Mitt’s supporters.
Anyone. But. Romney.
Forbes is right, it’s still fluid. Newt was and is a volatile personality that could blow himself at any moment.
When Perry faded, his supporters did not go to Mittens, when Cain was lynched, his supporters did not go to Mittens. If Newt implodes, his supporters will not go to Mittens. See the trend here.
Why does everyone always suspect a Pro-Romney conspiracy where there is none?
Forbes endorsed Perry a long time back, and seems to be sticking with it.
Doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Romney or the suddenly-conservative hero Newt.
Conservative voters must do a checklist of their own beliefs and match them against the candidates.
Many don't like Newt because of his infidelity and insider dealings.
Many don't like Mitt because he's Mormon and a flip flopping liberal.
Many don't like Perry because he is bad in debates and because of in state tuition for illegals.
Time to weigh the candidates positives.
I believe Perry is the best based on record of achievement in Texas.
I believe he also is closest to my beliefs in limited government and solutions coming from local power.
I also know he is more reliable on the 2nd Amendment, life, spending.
Go President Perry!
And0 is a permanent brain freeze.
Perry will get a second look when people realize that Newt is a bad idea.
Perry has cash, is a good retail politician, and is known for his good ground game in TX, all of which will play to his advantage in Iowa.
This is what kills me. I see it all the time here on FR. Most of the people here that are claiming that Newt will “obliterate” Obama in a debate, conveniently forget that the media will never allow that to happen.
And I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve read a FReeper post that says they would be happy to vote for Bachmann, Perry or Santorum if they end of being the nominee - but it just “doesn’t look like that’s going to happen”.
This is what I don’t get...if conservatives would line up behind the 3 most conservative candidates - then maybe they wouldn’t be behind in the polls!
A lot of FReepers that are currently cheerleading for Big Government Newt - I’ve seen them pin their hopes and dreams on Palin first - then they invested heavy emotions into Cain - and NOW they are hard-at-it right now, trying to convince us conservatives that are sticking by conservative candidates...trying to convince us that Newt is the only one who can win.
Way to be fickle people! So many of you keep letting the media and the polls tell you who to support - you’ve already given up! You’re like puppets on a string being yanked back and forth by the media. Isn’t the primary the time to stick to your principles?
I respect your opinions but with all do respect.....
please scroll down
Perry is a big loser...In fact, he reminds me of Shemp of the 3 Stooges...
Ive come to the conclusion that Zero will never agree to a debate with anyone who has real debate skills. This means a debate with Newt will never happen. Zero would debate Perry though and since Perrys debate performance expectations are nil all he would have to do to break even is not faint and fall off the stage. Anything better would constitute a win.
Here’s how I feel.
When all is said and done, we will have a candidate....
Then we rally around that person... All of us...Palin, Trump, Rush, Hannity etc etc...
That’s how it’s done.
Each one of our candidates are fine people and can beat Obama...
Do you agree?
He better start coming back soon, if he is going to charge into the lead.
That's a very good point. I think Obama would tend to underestimate Perry, and leave an opening where Perry can remind us of HIS record of success - compared to Zero's abject record.
I do agree with that - so why are so many conservatives supporting a big statist like Newt Gingrich? Isn't this the time to put our weight behind a small government conservative? Why settle for anything less at this point?
