In 2008, John McCain's campaign team discussed whether they should let Sarah Palin be sworn in as vice-president if they were to win the election, according to campaign staffer Nicolle Wallace. "There certainly were discussions -- not for long because of the arc the campaign took -- but certainly there were discussions about whether, if they were to win, it would be appropriate for her to be sworn in," Wallace tells Time's Claire Suddath. In her new novel, It's Classified, Wallace has a character -- a mentally ill female vice-president -- which she says is based on her experience working with Palin.

You just slandered commies.
I pretty much share your contention. Although I don’t begrudge Palin one tiny bit for her decision, due to grim and hellish scenario put before her... there is a lingering sense that evil has pretty much won the day, and has fully descended onto our country. Looking at things from the media to the culture to the national debt, it becomes difficult to argue that the USA has reached a point where it has become entirely unsalvageable.
Amen to that! The sooner he retires the better.
Disgusting. The whole lot of them is disgusting.
This is kind of amusing nonsense. It sounds like Nicolle Wallace was very jealous of Sarah Palin. If anything, it would make more sense to speculate that McCain would yield the job to his sane VP, Sarah Palin.
John McCain did a great job for his country; but he should have resigned years ago; he is a broken man with a disordered mind, IMO.
This article is so much junk. A President would not have that authority after people voted for the pair.
In fairness, she says only that there were “discussions” without saying among whom.
She doesn’t say that John McCain was a part of these discussions. I’d bet the “discussions” about not swearing in Palin were between Nicole Wallace and her intern.
McCain’s poor judgment was in hiring someone like Nicole Wallace.
“”Nicole Wallace””
She’s the one who caused so much trouble during the campaign - the ruckus about Sarah’s wardrobe etc., and I can’t remember what else but she’s trouble! Who on earth would want to read a book written by her?
Some people just can’t stand not making fools of themselves.
I don’t think so. It’s personal to them.
“”McCains poor judgment was in hiring someone like Nicole Wallace.””
This is something that we should all remember in picking our next candidate for president. How “mentally stable” are the people the candidate chooses to advise him? This woman has a problem.
Doesn’t sound as tho’ McCain was able to discern mental stability in his own campaign workers - or in his own family! But then again, how mentally stable is McCain?
Wallace’s book may be fiction but if she’s blabbing about similarities to Sarah in interviews, I would think Sarah has a cause of action against her.
Still a little numb myself. Thinking maybe the attacks from the rats will stop now. But, we know that’s not gonna happen. Once they taste blood they can’t stop. Luckily, she’s stronger than any of them. I still think we’ll win this set, but, the thrill is gone.
It seems to me that VP is a constitutional office, and the VP doesn’t report to the President. The VP may have no real job while the P lives, but the VP reports to the voters...period.
Does she have ANY idea how bad this makes McCain look?
McCain for his own good, should kill this immediately.
I wouldn't help that woman cross a street let alone buy anything from her.
Who was handing out clothes receipts to the media ! Wallace needs to be investigated as a possible MOLE for Obama during the campaign !
Has media whore/ moron McPain opened his camera hungry trap yet to defend Palin ????
This sounds like someone who is trying to cause trouble. I take this with a huge dose of skepticism.
I didn’t read this because it appeared to be a steaming pile of Obama.
* What Sarah Palin is like on the trail: "She works harder than anyone Ive known in politics. Shell go until one or two in the morning and shes up again at the crack of dawn."
* The $150,000 clothing allowance: "The campaign made no effort to hide it from anyone. It was on our disclosures."
* The role of sexism in campaign coverage: "A lot of newsrooms have thought very carefully about how they cover race. I dont think the same conversations have gone on regarding women."
* Why she doesnt want to be a distraction: "I think politics is like an X-ray machine: Everything is found out eventually."
* And how she feels at the end of the day about the opposition: "Campaigns bring out the warriors in everybody."
Beast: So few people have actually spent time with Sarah Palin. And you have, and you're one of the few people who talk to the media that has. Did you have an impression of her that's grown and changed over the few months you've known her? What has it been like getting to know her?
I think she has had an entrance into national politics unlike anybody else. Unlike Bill Clinton, who came from a small Southern state, he was the actual nominee so he was before different state press corps and he was before the political press corps. With Bush, the same thing. He was governor and came up as his own candidate. He obviously had a pretty big press corps in Texas and was in the Bush family.
I worked for Jeb Bush. Sarah Palin reminds me a lot of Jeb Bush, who was very hands on. He was always in direct contact, email-wise, with reporters. He'd often get back to them before I'd get back to them. She's like that. She's very hands on. Reminds me of my time working for Jeb Bush. She doesn't like a lot of bureaucracy. She gets on her email and deals directly with press and the staff and it's very, very impressive. Very appealing.
What do you think people can get to know about her that they havent had time to learn yet that will come out with more exposure to her?
Shes just very, very engaging and shes very normal and down to earth and very quick and smart, and shes the real deal.
Is she really fun to hang out with? If you sit next to her at a pot luck dinner, would you enjoy hanging out with her?
I spent time with her around her announcement and her convention speech and it was such an intense time. I only traveled with her one week, the one week we traveled to Wasilla. So I havent seen a lot of her relaxed moments. She works harder than anyone Ive known in politics. Shell go until one or two in the morning and shes up again at the crack of dawn. Shes very hardworking; her kids are adorable and wonderful. Bristol, for a 17-year-old to be examined and criticized the way shes been, shes just graceful and poised and lovely. And Willow, whos on the campaign trail with her mom, is just the sweetest 14-year-old Ive ever met in my life. And Piper has more personality than anyone on either side of this entire race. Watch out, Oprah! And Todd Palin is a wonderful, supportive husband and also a very smart political mind.
People are looking for an explanationhow do we judge her?
We should judge her by her record. Shes not someone who came off the street.
She has a uniform, she wears skirt suits. She has not changed her appearance. She is in the public eye, its all for everyone to examine. I dont know exactly why she has brought such strong reaction from the press and from supporters and detractors. But it is completely unfair for her to have to deal with any aspect with the story of the clothes.
