What’s so electable about Rick Perry?
The Washington Post's ComPost ^ | September 12, 2011 | Alexandra Petri

Electability.

It's an elusive quality. It's like chemistry, between movie stars. It's like tinnitus, for wine. Or is that tannins? You know what I mean — the quality of wine that keeps wine experts' voices ringing in your ears when you are stuck next to them at dinners.

It's like buzz. It's like the It factor.

It's what Bertie Wooster would call a certain indefinable Thingness.

Somehow, we have this idea that a person can be “electable.” Of course, you can’t be electable in a vacuum. If I am electable in the middle of a forest and no one is there to notice me or care — well, I’m probably Ron Paul. But the whole question of electability is, at best, a glorified form of guesswork. It's a study in group probability. “Do you think X can beat Obama?” is quite a different question than “Would you vote for him?”

I would define electability as “the vague sense that there are people out there who would vote for this guy.”

It's not likability.

Nowhere is this distinction more apparent than when it comes to Rick Perry.

If there's one thing that Rick Perry's current increasingly ineluctable progress toward the GOP nomination has taught us, it is that the two qualities are not only unrelated, they might not even have grown up under the same roof....

Tens of millions of illegals have compromised and undermined our entire system, including our electoral process, choked off our schools, jails, social services, hospitals, killed, raped, robbed shot, kidnapped, ran over, burglarized hundreds of thousands of Americans, turning our borders into a lawless national security time-bomb.

This issue aside, we cannot afford four more years of Obama.

This issue aside????

Ya know what, I heard the *exact* same GD thing when Bush running for office. 8 years of that disaster resulted in a conga-line of multiple millions more illegals flooding into the U.S., while Bush sat up in the White House celebrating Cinco De Mayo.

No sale.

You want to support those that aid and abet the destruction of our homeland, feel free.

Coulter was on with Hannity this afternoon and said Romney will be the nominee. With Ann these days I can't tell when she's serious and when she's sarcastic. I think she was serious.

I might get angry enough to vote Obama if Romney's the nominee. It can't hurt, I have a knack for supporting failed candidates.

Think Sotomayer and Kagan. B.H. Obama would appoint two just like them. M. Romney is not my favorite by far but he would make a better choice. This is huge.

We should support the GOP nominee whoever he or she is. In his second term Obama would go really wild.

Let's step out of Utopia into the real world.

The federal government has failed in its duty to secure the border.

The federal government has failed in its duty to address at least 12 million illegal aliens.

The Supreme Court has ruled you must education illegal alien children in your state.

The Supreme Court has ruled you must provide social services for illegal aliens in your state.

You're governor of a massive border state.

After you've educated them through high school, you cannot deport them. That's the fed's job and the fed's aren't doing it.

What do you do with these new adults who aren't going anywhere except draining your welfare system?

Texas decided to give in-state tuition in hopes of making them productive Texans if they've been a resident 3 years, graduated from a Texas high school and are trying to get legalized by the federal gov't. It's triage. Only the federal government can resolve this.

It's just symptom of the problem the Feds have saddled states with for decades.

Perry didn't create the problem, with the legislature he's tried to mitigate the damage though in-state tuition, employer sanctions, tougher laws against human trafficking, treating document fraud as organized crime, banning driver's licenses for illegals, using his own funds to fill-in as you can on the border where the feds are failing.

It's a hideous and chronic burden thanks to the gross negligence of at least four federal administrations.

Perry clearly and consistently has different priorities than W. He opposes amnesty whether it's the federal DREAM Act or citizenship as a reward through a guest worker program. Consistency matters.

We must be wary of those espousing positions who have no practical record on an issue such as immigration. Today Ann Coulter was saying Romney, who she called the "eventual nominee," is better on immigration than Perry. Based on what, I ask? It's flipping Mitt Romney! She's just about done my head in lately.

We need to press these candidates, particularly Romney and Bachmann who've said little about it, what happens beyond securing the border, they're all for that although with some differences in implementation. What happens after?

What happened to her boy Christie?

Coulter has gotten down right goofy. :)

I still like her books, though. Just finished reading Demonic.

Are you being paid by the Palin non-campaign to post on FR?

Carling, I think you would probably find your contentment on any one of Cincinatus'Wife's threads. There are plenty of them and you'll be surrounded by FOP (Friends of Perry). I have a strong feeling that you wouldn't ask the same question to that FReeper as you have to 2ndDivisionVet.

I own three mules -

I drew two conclusions from your first four words.

1. You like Clint Eastwood.

2. You're a Palin fan.

Cheers!

LOL! And did you read her T-shirt?

It reminds me of the old P.J. O'Rourke quote, "If meat is murder, are eggs rape?"

Cheers!

Perry was at Bilderberg a year or two past, by the way.

I also heard that John Kerry spent some time in Vietnam.

1. Yes, I like Clint’s movies.
2. Yes, she has more balls and backbone than any of her male counterparts.

All that said, come November 2012 I’ll hitch up a mule, drive to the polls and vote for whoever is not BHO, including Daffy Duck!

So, you'll be keeping one mule for yourself, right? /broad-hint of pun>
