Overview
The sizeable lead Barack Obama held over a generic Republican opponent in polls conducted earlier this year has vanished as his support among independent voters has fallen off. Currently, 41% of registered voters say they would like to see Barack Obama reelected, while 40% say they would prefer to see a Republican candidate win in 2012. In May, Obama held an 11-point lead.
This shift is driven by a steep drop-off in support for Obama among independents. The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted July 20-24 among 1,501 adults and 1,205 registered voters finds that just 31% of independent voters want to see Obama reelected, down from 42% in May and 40% in March. Where Obama held a slim 7-point edge among independent registered voters two months ago, a generic Republican holds an 8-point edge today.
This is consistent with a drop in Obamas approval among all independents. Currently, a majority (54%) disapprove of Obamas performance for the first time in his presidency. His approval among independents has slipped to 36% from 42% last month and 49% in late May....

He still has many advantages (no primary opponent, incumbency, money, media spin). But he is oh so vulnerable.
in addition to previous discussions on here about polling battleground states only, there is another thing wrong with these polls.
The first question asked is, “Who are the 19% undecided?” What is there breakdown as far as demographics and party ID? If they are mostly DEM, you might figure most will break for Obama. Those are the group in the poll to follow up with many more questions.
Its a record that anybody would LOVE to run on:
$4 gas
10% unemployment
surging inflation
plunging home prices
recurring $1.5 trillion deficits
45 million on food stamps
those 45 million on food stamps might receive a GOTV reminder with their monthly card around election day. Not that they all are permanent welfare voters. At least not yet.
Given that fact this is an adult/registered voter poll, I would imagine most the undecideds will stay home.
Yeah that one is a bit of a tough call. I know many of them are solidly in the Baraqqi Coalition. Hopefully a third or so are hoping for a better life someday.
Also, the current occupant of the Oval Office is committed to spending something like a billion dollars, either directly or on his behalf, in a re-election bid that promises to be the most opposition-research based, incivil, and downright dirty to the point of vote corruption, campaign in history. Even FDR could not bring this degree of dehumanizing opponents to bear.
This time, the “malefactors of great wealth” are on the side of SUPPORTING the forces of “progressive” government, not in resisting them.
Integrity is not the most distinguishing trait of this regime.
well if they did not try to weed out the unlikely voters, then this poll has MORE STUPID in it that it is more useless.
The Pew polls always skew for the Democrats, so Obama is half way done toast.
I’d still like to know where these supposed Romney supporters are. Romney is an utterly phony candidate with a completely concocted candidacy. Doesn’t exist in the real world, but the money and the media are trying to make it so.
Over half the population is completely ignorant and could not even tell you who the VP is. They also get their Opinions from the MSM and the Daily Show while they watch their TV’s all night. Because most of them have no jobs to go to. These are the people who we never see counted. Which is why Obama came out of nowhere to win in 2008.
Welcome to FreeRepublic.
Milt, Myth, Willard, Mitt, the RINO King, whatever. It’s all Gov. Romney.
The Pew Poll has a +4 advantage for the Democrats in party affiliation. Rasmussen has party affiliation about even, and Gallup gives the Republicans a +4 advantage. Bottom line: Obama’s 1 point lead in the Pew Poll is due to their skewed sample.
This is the electorate as it is not as you hope it is.
Every one of our positions represents the principles of the vast bulk of the conservative movement. So, continue with your illusions if you will, but remember this: your party does not have some divine right to my support or the support of any other patriotic American. Either represent self-evident truth and the defense of God-given, unalienable rights, and keep your oath to support the Constitution of the United States and secure the Blessings of Liberty to Posterity, or go onto the ash heap of history with the Whigs, where you belong.
If the formerly grand old party nominates Romney, it will be the final death throes of the elephant.
