As if the death of Osama bin Laden weren’t enough good news for one month to offer the once-sagging political fortunes of the Obama administration — the terrorist mastermind was killed May 1, though it already seems like a year ago — when you include the failure of the Republican Medicare overhaul to pass in the Senate, plus indications that Tea Party darling Sarah Palin might actually run for president, the mood at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue must border on unbridled jubilation.
Can’t you see Obama skipping through the halls the White House, swinging his arms wide, perhaps singing a few verses of whatever childish doggerel pops into his swelling heart — “A tisket, a tasket, a green-and-yellow basket . . .” — while staffers tip back in their chairs and grin giddily at one another?
Yes, it still feels reckless to dare hope. Palin is in the business of seeming to run for president, of projecting herself as a significant political force while draining millions of dollars from the credulous tin-foil hat wing of her party. Conventional wisdom insists that Palin won’t actually run because: a) she’s making too much money not running, and b) she can’t possibly win a general election.
Realist that I am, I’m forced to lump a serious Palin candidacy with cold fusion, zero-calorie chocolate and a robust economy in the Things Too Good to Be True file.
But with the Republican presidential field divided between notorious failures — Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney — and nameless nobodies — Jon Huntsman, Herman Cain, et al — you can see how Palin might delude herself into believing this is The Moment.
Unmistakable signs point toward a Palin run — she’s building her staff, finishing a two-hour biographical documentary, beginning a bus “listening” tour and has purchased a $1.7 million home in the nativist mecca of Arizona as a campaign base.
It’s that last detail that you really have to savor, symbolically. Arizona, of course, was the home of that far right ideologue Sen. Barry Goldwater, who ran so disastrously in 1964.
The parallels are thrilling. Then, as now, the far right was concerned with an overreaching federal government — in 1964, the intrusive feds were forcing states to treat black people as American citizens; now, it’s threatening to do something about the 12 million illegal immigrants living in serfdom.
Just as the Tea Party drapes itself in the trappings of revolutionary patriotism, so did Goldwater: “Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice” he famously declared.
Just as Palin’s foreign policy is a hash of ignorance and bravado, so Goldwater terrified Americans by suggesting that tactical nuclear bombs be used in Vietnam.
Like Palin, he was flayed by comedians.
“His campaign slogan, ‘In your heart, you know he’s right,’ was transformed by humorists into, ‘In your gut, you know he’s nuts,’ ” wrote historian Charles Peters.
Johnson — who, like Obama, was not a particularly popular president — buried Goldwater in the 1964 election. Palin, of course, while adored by her base, always lags far behind in the general polls, something her supporters can’t grasp because failing to perceive the existence of people who disagree with them is what they’re all about.
If I had to bet, I’d say that Palin will flirt with running, pump her fans into a book-buying, speech-attending frenzy, then pull out, the way she quit being governor of Alaska so she could work the rubber-chicken circuit.
But I could also see her deciding that, gosh darn it, her time is now, and her party would be forced to embrace her. Given that a once-respected Republican stalwart like John McCain jettisoned his love-of-country to pick a dangerous demagogue as his running mate before, it’s easy to imagine the Republicans turning to Palin again, even though the result would be the same in 2012 as it was in 2008.
A Palin candidacy would have a number of good effects. First, it would mobilize every Democrat with a pulse to work feverishly for Obama’s re-election. Second, Palin would end up losing in spectacular fashion, perhaps nudging the Republican lunatic fringe back into their caves for a year or two, which would be blessed relief, and maybe even enough time to finally get some kind of immigration reform passed.
Needless to say, this column will go all-out to support Sarah Palin as the Republican presidential nominee in 2012, no doubt joined by the Onion and “Saturday Night Live” and all the other grateful comedians who delight at the ascendance of this Old Faithful of unintentional humor, our own Niagara Falls of self-mockery. Happy days are here again.

This reminds me of Trumpeter Martin who was sent to Captain Benteen with a written message from George Custer’s adjutant, Lt. Cooke. As he rode by Major Reno’s battalion, he shouted (of the Indians ahead), “We’ve got them now, boys!”
Neil, I’ve been where you are. Twenty years ago, after the first Gulf War, and your guys nominated a really big clown (actually, two) for their ticket. Trust me on this. These things don’t always go the way you think they will.
Let them keep whistling past the graveyard. And I’ll bet that Obama skips through the WH already. Lightweight that he is.
So the most we have to worry about is SNL and Left wing columnists, along with MoveOn, Acorn, Organizing for America, Soros, etc. and the RNC country club?
It’s doable.
I sure hope Palin runs. I’m not sure what she is doing now should be viewed, if she ends up not running. Surely..she is running, and is doing so here way....

As Sarah Palin begins the GREAT CRUSADE, the Left is moving from frank denial of her very existence to a disingenuous, nervous embrace of Palin as the “most beatable of GOP opponents.” This is now the party line, but I remember another GOP candidate who was even further behind Jimmy Carter in far more reliable polls in 1979-80, a man whom the President’s close political gurus, Hamilton Jordan and Jody Powell were literally “praying” to run against, so sure were they that Carter could defeat him: Ronald Reagan. Jordan, a normally savvy political operative, could not have been more wrong than in this assessment that he provided to Newsweek in early 1979:
“Yet it remains a measure of the stresses between Carter and the Democratic left that his people anticipate more trouble with his renomination than his re-election. Their winter-book bet for the Republican nomination is Ronald Reagan, and they consider him beatable, so long as Carter monopolizes the center—”just 80 per cent of the people,” says Jordan—and isolates Reagan on the outer right.”

As it turned out, Carter cruised to renomination, easily defeating Ted Kennedy, and was flattened by Reagan in a general election landslide, losing 44 states, 12 Senate seats, and 26 house seats.
In 1980, the ratio of conservatives to liberals according to Gallup was 40-22. In 2010, the ratio of conservatives to liberals was slightly higher at 42-20.

In 2012, the GOP is going to nominate another charismatic, conservative western Governor to face an even more liberal President than Carter, and the country is even more conservative than it was in 1980. Sounds like a recipe for a landslide win all right.
When she wins the nomination, all the lib MSM in print and tv will all say Obama was just reelected. This will work in our benefit to be sure.
Week after week it will become the MSM drum beat that Obama does not even have to bother to campaign, he has already won they will say.
The WH will say we expect a tough race, but they will tell their MSM friends that`s not the real feeling in the WH, they feel as good as elected.
But very quietly we will start to here whispers that the WH is starting to get nervous, eventually a MSM outlet will report that the Obama internal polling is showing a tight race and that the MSM polls including Fox are not accurate.
It will go something along those lines, and sometime in Jan 2013 Gov Sarah Palin will be sworn in as the first woman President of the United States of America
You can take this to the bank! All Sarah has to do is forget about the media, forget about their phony polls and just run!
I can guarantee you that not one of them will pull the lever or mark the box next her name when it comes time to put up or shut up.
More proof the left is scared out of their minds. If they truly thought Palin would insure an Obama win they would be out there telling Republicans she was the best shot to DEFEAT Obama so we would make her the nominee.
LOL, we’ll see about that. They don’t control what Palin says. Palin will say what she wants this time and not be held back by the McCain campaign and they know it. The media will also be on trial along with 0bama as Palin does not hold back. They are relying on lies. No matter what they have hit her with, they have not done anything and will not have anything to make it any worse. It will only get better as she shatters the myths and propaganda that has been used against her. They are in for it and they know it. I’m glad that Palin has not been dissuaded and is showing she is up for the challenge. Our country needs her.

That’s exactly what it is. They haven’t been able to control themselves, however, and got wrapped up in it. Lately, they’ve been trying to convince themselves they dissuaded her from running and ignoring her, but she has shown she is up to it. But even her simply entering the race with the fight in the primaries to come and the media hoping to fend her off, they know she will do damage and say damaging things about 0bama and the media during the campaign and they know the interest she draws and that people will be hearing things they’ve been hoping to hide in regards to what’s going on with this corrupt punk in office and it’s just she will be going all out and in a campaign drawing astronomical attention. The day she announces will be uncontrollable.
I heard frigging George Will fragging Sarah on the Don and Roma Show (WLS-AM) this morning. George: you’re a ginger and you wear bow ties!
That’s Delaware and a different story. Palin is not the stereotype and will rise above it. I think she’s running and the only way to find out is for her to run. There is no one in the field up to it and they haven’t gone through what Palin has. They’ll be fighting an uphill battle when the demonization comes and not so sure what they have on them, but with Palin it is the most mundane things and myths.
They can keep jawing away. They are nothing when it comes down to it. I love that Palin will move on regardless with her tenacity. You know she is driving them bats^it crazy.
