Former Speaker of the House and 2012 Republican presidential nomination contender Newt Gingrichs remarks about the Rep. Paul Ryan budget plan had upset a lot of conservatives. Some leading opinion makers on the right have declared his candidacy over as a result.
Was it a lapse of judgment on Gingrichs part, or something else? On his Tuesday program, conservative Rush Limbaugh floated a theory. According to him, it could have been a strategic move if Gingrich is no longer taking himself seriously as the next president of the United States.
I mentioned yesterday that, I talked about the phenomenon known as niche marketing niche programming in terms of radio programs, Limbaugh said. Theres a lot of that going on. I think that goes on in politics. I think people seek unexploited areas to try to fill a void that exists. For example, if the Republican field is already viewed as chocked full of middle-of-the-road mainstream conservatives. Does it make sense to enter the field as one of those, or maybe find a niche where you are in your mind a mainstream conservative, but differ in two or three areas enough so that you are not called in a derogatory way a typical right-winger.
Rush said it isnt the first time Newt has upset conservatives.
Its not unprecedented behavior for Newt not the first time, he said. We have the Newt and Hillary show. Weve had the Newt and Pelosi show. And dont forget, we had the Newt and Dede Scozzofava show, if youve forgotten.
Of all the things we know about Newt Gingrich, we know hes not stupid, he said. What do you think, as he looks at the Republican presidential field and the whole prospect of the presidential election, what do you think he really thinks about his prospects? The rule of thumb, the conventional wisdom is that people that do this, people that actually subject themselves to the media anal exam, people that subject themselves to the lifestyle change, the never-ending energy required to not only run a campaign, but then if you win it, your life not only changes forever for at least four years and you hope eight. People that do this dont generally do it hoping to lose. Now some of them do it knowing theyre not serious. Theyre using it for other reasons to make themselves known, to have on their resume former presidential candidate so they can get invited as never-ending revolving guests on cable shows and so that the graphic will be former presidential candidate.

Limbaugh explained that on the other end of the spectrum, there are people who are serious about winning the presidency and disciplined in their campaigns. And Limbaugh said that six to eight weeks ago, Gingrich told him he thought he was a serious candidate, but the latest round of behavior from Gingrich suggests otherwise.
Now my theory is based on the belief that Newt knows his chances of winning the nomination are tiny, Limbaugh said. If Im wrong about this then the rest of the theory falls apart, and I have to remind you Ive spoken to him about this. When I spoke to him six weeks, eight weeks ago, I mean he was of the mind it was already done. Winning the nomination was a formality. The field was weak. He was head and shoulders above anybody in the field in his mind. So he had to go through the nomination process, in his mind that was a fait accompli. He was already planning his campaign and life as the nominee at this breakfast.
Limbaugh said the motivation behind this most recent switch was an effort to win the so-called John McCain-wing of the GOP, the moderate Republicans. Conventional wisdom would suggest former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty would have that segment sewn up, but Limbaugh explained Pawlenty is trying to distance himself from it. Thus, that segment was Newts for the taking.
And the things Gingrich said to Meet the Press host David Gregory about social engineering werent meant to resonate with Republican primary voters, but another audience.
He has to know now after that that his belief on not being part of right-wing social engineering, slap at [Rep. Paul] Ryan, he has to know thats not going to resonate with Republican primary voters, Limbaugh said. He knew it before he made the statement. But who does it resonate with? Who has the potential to like that? The power elite in 2012 and beyond, the establishment, D.C., the ruling class. Theyll eat a statement like that up.
By winning that audience, Limbaugh said, Gingrich would get attention and stand out from the field.
If Newt can provoke attack from the conservative Republican contenders and even from the rank-and-file voters by trodding on their sacred cows, which is what he did theres no denying it, Limbaugh said. He trodded on some sacred cows as defined by this campaign. So be it if he does that. It gives him some visibility. In some peoples eye, it makes him reasonable. With this crowd that Im talking about, it is a resume enhancement to be criticized by me. And rises above the field with this kind of stuff.
Limbaugh said Gingrich knows this strategy isnt a winning one in the short run, but it does consider Gingrichs long-term interests.
Now youre not going to win the nomination with this strategy, Limbaugh said. We all agree with that, right? Youre not going to win the nomination with it. So what is he doing? This gives him a slim chance at something else and in his mind he could have him perfectly hedged when he loses. He could end up being, like McCain used to be, the darling of the establishment media, corporate, academic. McCain was until he ran, and then abandoned you know he was out there proudly saying the media was his base until it came time to run. When it came time to run, McCain abandoned all of that and tried to become one of us. Newts doing the exact opposite.
Raw intellect and wisdom don't necessarily intersect. Newt is exhibit A of just that.
Well, if we are looking for silver linings in this I can think of one. It has, very early in the primary process, helped voters see they are not alone in demanding sane conservative fiscal responsibility. Apparently, we don’t have to accept less from out candidates.
Who is Huntsman? what is this? Newt has gone bye bye. We are left with Cain and Bachmann. Romney would lose by 20 points. He is the father of socialized health care. He is total history. Who is “mitch Daniel”? What is this?
Yeah.
Like that worked out so well for McRINO...
I certainly hope you are correct
Its a good strategy. He knows conservatives aren’t staying home, there will be a lot of independents and moderates this election cycle and most importantly, it is free press from the lib media.
As long as Herman Cain is the most conservative of the bunch fiscally and Santorum doesn’t have name recognition, Newt would have to beat Paulenty and Romney.
If he wins the nomination, he then tacks right.
It’s not so far fetched if Newts goal is a gig at Foxnews. Didn’t Trump quit after he locked in a Fox n’ Friends bit?
Trump, Newt, who cares really. We can see what a president all about me is like, that's what we're hoping to change.
We need to challenge the RINO Senators and clean house in the House.
Re-electing a RINO Senator is only forgivable if it's a sacrifice for getting the majority.
Re-electing a RINO Representative is banned. We'll vote for Dems just to take you down.
Electing any fool who loves this country and wants it preserved as a better place is essential. This person must dismantle the FedZilla behemoth starting with obamocare
But in the long run we need to automate these politicians. The next ipad or mousetrap that really has meaning to people will be totally automated and non-human robot politicians.
Everything will be programed in advance and then you vote on it and they cannot lie or change direction without an internet vote by text message. Simple machines that do as they are told is all we need.
The outdated human ones seem to prove themselves with offers of money, perhaps it would be desirable to make the robots work the same way...instead of voting for what they do, we pledge dollars or gamble on who wins or what they do. We could make a fortune!
"Politico reports that Callista Gingrich declared on the public recordbecause she had tothat she owed as much as $500,000 to the shmancy jewelery store, Tiffany and Co."
Failed Presidential Run as "thinking man's moderate" + subsequent speaking gigs = retired jewelry debt.
No, I listened to Newt trying to do damage control on Mark Levin’s show last night, and there was nothing intentional about his hara kiri. Rush is wrong.
Hmmmm...I wanna know who these TEA party "leaders" are, and who these conservative bloggers are.
True, thats why you'll always hear Newt referred to as "smart", never as "wise"....
I see two possible motivations for Newt’s actions
1. Ego. He can not stand that Paul Ryan is seen as the go getter of the Conservative movement. Listen to his interviews lately. He believes that his little think tanks that nobody has ever heard of are end all be all of the current debate. For the last decade he has been sitting the bench, but he talks like he has been in the thick of the action, which he was not.
2. Money. Rush is right. Considering how much he owes on his credit cards, he is going to need a lot of it soon. He is setting himself up to become respectable in the eyes of the Liberal establishment in order to snag lucrative no work jobs.
His problem is lack of discipline.
He was bashing Clinton out of one side of his mouth, kissing his girlfriend out of the other. Now she's got him by the shorts, calling the shots.
You have to believe she's not the brightest bulb on the tree, either, shacking up with a serial adulterer.
Newt's just doing this to garner a few votes and get an appointment when he throws those votes to the real nominee.
What. An. Ass.
I did not get it either, he tried to say Newt is going for the rino vote. Even Bo said what about Pawlenty. Rush tried to cover for liberal timmy to.
He wants to be the new Joe Scarborough or Pat Buchanan? Good luck with that Newty.
Maybe he needs matching campaign funds to help pay for his wife’s Tiffany and American Express bills. He’s out of walking around money you know?
