Even though it is in its early days, the GOP sweepstakes for the presidential nomination appears to be a battle that George Orwell would love.
In "Animal Farm," his famous satire of political hopes and dashed expectations, Orwell posits a revolution by animals seizing control of a farm. Idealistic equality quickly degenerates into the politically more practical "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
Something similar could be said of the GOP contenders being mentioned as possible presidential candidates: All candidates may be theoretically equal this early, but polls show that four - Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich - are bunched in the top tier while another dozen or so possibilities lag behind.
The latest Gallup survey released Friday places Huckabee first at 19 percent, Romney with 15 percent, Palin with 12 percent and Gingrich at 10 percent. With a maximum margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, the order is still a photo finish.
A survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press this week gave a slightly different order but still a fairly tight cluster: Romney, 21 percent; Huckabee, 20 percent; Palin, 13 percent; and Gingrich, 11 percent....

Who will go on to prove that Obama can, indeed, win re-election by a landslide of Reaganesque proportions.
Hopefully Gomer won’t run.
He cannot raise money.
E. None of the above.
I gather all the PR about the four retreads is aimed at convincing a doubtful public that there is really no way to prevent a second term.
Gomer’s campaign to repeal Obamacare is phenomenal. He has raised some serious funds and gets over 50 thousand hits a day on his website.
Don’t underestimate the Huckster. He has managed to stay in front for quite some time lately.
There is simply no way that what you posted will happen; not even with all of the fraud we know the Dems/unions/etc. will pull.
Frankly, your PDS is reaching exaggerated levels, clouding your judgement.
I was going to ask you who you’re rooting for, but to be honest with you, I could give a $#!+. You’re a troll. A troll with long-standing and seniority, but a troll, nonetheless.
I don’t recall Governor Palin or Speaker Gingrich running for president before. Please fill us in on that...
Gingrich tried a short run in ‘08. Remember? He didn’t even get to Iowa if I recall. But he did declare his candidacy for a short while.
You: “(grunting noises).”
Me: “Gotta go, I'll send a crochet needle and some yarn.”
(A loud buzzing sound is heard and RockinRight is left alone. The smell of ozone permeates the air. A slight sound of water running is heard as RockinRight urinates down HIS leg. Back on planet Earth Palin supporters rejoice!)
And Gov. Sarah Palin ran for president, too? Was I in a coma?
Did I say that? I have reread my post several times and it appears that I didn’t.
Gingrich, as in Gingrich only.........
I do not understand the appeal of either Romney or Huckabee. I didn’t understand it 4 years ago, and I still don’t.
No, that was madprof98. My apologies.
Huckabee is Gomer Pyle meets Andy Taylor meets Junior Samples. Very appealing to a certain segment. Myth Romney looks like central casting’s idea of a president, before they started using Morgan Freeman and that crew.
A troll? Really?
Because I dare disagree with the Oracle of Sarah?
Cain, Daniels, or, in a pinch, Trump.
