Even though it is in its early days, the GOP sweepstakes for the presidential nomination appears to be a battle that George Orwell would love.
In "Animal Farm," his famous satire of political hopes and dashed expectations, Orwell posits a revolution by animals seizing control of a farm. Idealistic equality quickly degenerates into the politically more practical "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
Something similar could be said of the GOP contenders being mentioned as possible presidential candidates: All candidates may be theoretically equal this early, but polls show that four - Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich - are bunched in the top tier while another dozen or so possibilities lag behind.
The latest Gallup survey released Friday places Huckabee first at 19 percent, Romney with 15 percent, Palin with 12 percent and Gingrich at 10 percent. With a maximum margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, the order is still a photo finish.
A survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press this week gave a slightly different order but still a fairly tight cluster: Romney, 21 percent; Huckabee, 20 percent; Palin, 13 percent; and Gingrich, 11 percent....

I really wish someone would learn the difference between trashing someone, and admiring them, but realizing that independent voters will not support her for President.
Absolutely fricking retarded article. Of course that “Gang of Four” polls across the top: they’re the ones anyone has heard of. How is Michelle Bachman or Tim Pawlenty going to attract poll numbers when they haven’t campaigned???
That was just downright funny!!!! Thanks.
I don’t care for either of them because I consider them to both be big brother nanny state lovers.
The four media-anointed frontrunners may not all be former presidential candidates, but they are all Old News—even Sarah Palin. I’d like to see how some focus on the GOP leaders who are actually turning heads today.
The best we can do is throw all the clothes into the machine and see which ones come out clean...........The rest we gladly discard for good. We don’t need another mess like ‘08!
The appeal is within the media.
Palin analysis courtesy of me:
1. She’s a great mother, an amazing ex governor, and an all around great gal.
2. Her ideology matches mine rather well.
3. Her command of the facts is mediocre. Being witty and having great zingers doesn’t make you a great debator.
4. She’s coming in with super-high negatives from the start. Nobody in this position who has gotten the nomination has ever won the Presidency.
I say this from a pragmatic and realistic viewpoint. I don’t hate Palin. I’ve seen her speak (in person in DC last summer). I watch her when she’s on TV when I can.
None of this changes the fact, though, that she will not win a national election.
I think Ted Nugent would make a hell of a president but he can’t win either.
Four politicians with +’s and -’s. Of these four I like Sarah best but, I’m drawn to Herman Cain because he is from the real world. www.hermancain.com
There, there that's a good boy.
Please do not delve into politics of the independent voter while you are crocheting a straight jacket for yourself.
Translation: you are completely wrong about Sarah Palin.
Buzz. Ozone. Whittle.
Were you out of town last weekend when Governor Palin made a VERY successful talk and Q&A session with the movers & shakers in India and then broke bread with the Prime Minister of Israel. Why would Bibi risk pissing off Mr. Obama if he thought he was headed for re-election, pray tell?
No kidding.
I was (notice the past tense) naive in my belief that the days of the media picking the candidates was over.......and then we had 2008.
I truly hope 2012 will not be a repeat of that mistake.
Gov. Palin surpassed 90% approval ratings as governor of a very independent-heavy state. As such, she’s done more to demonstrate an ability to win over independents than has Cain, Daniels, Trump or any other GOP alternative.
We’ve never elected an individual with no federal elected or flag officer-level experience to the White House. I’m sure Mr. Cain is a great guy, but can we afford the risk right now? I know he was with the Federal Reserve, but that is neither elected nor high-level military experience.
Which is why we woke up hung over and over night, McNasty had suddenly become our candidate.
Or else one could say we also successfully drank ourselves sober....
I take it you were too young—if you were even around—to recall the caricature that the media made of Reagan in the 70’s up to 1980.
Being realistic, Palin had a very short popularity in that category;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin#Job_approval_ratings.2C_with_comparisons
For the most part she steadily lost ground as her short term as Governor unfolded.
Because of people like you he probably will.
Palin was defending 18 lawsuits - with her own money - in Juneau, AK which is a very liberal state capital and is a huge news source in Alaska.
How could she have steady or increasing popularity?
Answer: She could not.
Look to Madison, WI and Scott Walker - he's 100% correct and falling in the polls.
So, your point is moot.
You mean she lost ground after she joined McCain’s ticket and she had the full force of the DNC’s dirty tricksters operating against her.
Saying that you’re not trashing Palin isn’t tantamount to rejecting the media template. Are you going to allow the left to choose your candidate? Again?
