Could the contrast have been more stark?
President Obama was, to borrow John Podhoretz's phrase, "pitch perfect" in his speech at the Memorial "service" in Tucson, Arizona. He focused on those whose lives were cut short, those whose lives were shattered, what we might learn from this searing atrocity and why it's important that we do so. The President rose to the moment with dignity and grace.
Sarah Palin, on the other hand, chose to respond to the atrocity by proclaiming that she was the victim of a "blood libel," attacked by evil meanies on the television set, when there was no evidence that her actions had anything to do with the actions of the loon who committed the atrocity. Factually true enough, I would say. But who cares? And why bother even mentioning it? It couldn't be less important. It couldn't be more self-absorbed.
All presidents and all presidential candidates (announced and unannounced) live in what Richard Ben Cramer called "the bubble." It's an hermetically sealed environment which allows very few "outsiders" in and goes to great lengths to keep the number of "insiders" to a minimum. This is why such great emphasis is placed on the people around the President (who they are, what they think, what their skill sets are, etc) by the political community as a whole (including political journalists and opinion makers). The insiders "protect" the president from the hundreds and thousands of bothersome people who are clamoring to give him their ideas. The insiders control what the president reads, what he sees, who he sees. They make sure that very few people get inside the bubble for very good reason(s) and for reasons that are sometimes not so pure.....

I don’t talk to anyone who changes what they think every other day. So, either the American public pays no attention at all until they are asked (the most likely answer) or something else is going on. The polls may tell us whose going to win, but they don’t make any sense. Do YOU know people who change their minds this often? If so, will you please ask them what on earth is going on in their heads?
I take it you're not a Sarah Palin fan. So you think it's ok for the MSM to libel her as being partially to blame for the death of that 9 year old girl and the others?
I love Dubya and he loves his family but he is staying out of this political race.
I wouldn’t discount this writer because of his association with Bushes.
I discount it because he’s an idiot.
I agree. Those panels are getting soooo old. I don’t watch them any more either. It usually ends up irritating me.

Wow.
When Sarah made her comments, she didn't specify HERSELF as a target of this scorn, but mentioned the blame placed on everyone, EXCEPT the one responsible, Jared Lee Loughner. The Blood Libel she mentioned was referring to everyone who doesn't agree with the liberal line, and anyone who opposes the Democrats. She was absolutely right, too, because that's exactly what the MSM and the Democrat apologists were doing.
Eleven-day old story. As others have said, she may have made a timing error or a mistake by using the words “blood libel” but they (the MSM, libs, etc.) would have found a semi-colon out of place with her speech. She’s moved on; time for us here to put it behind, too.
Sarah Palin did not once mention the word “I” in her speeches. The blood libel comment cam after she noted that each individual is responsible for his own actions and that blame cannot be collectively attributed.....(but)the journalists and pundits manufactured a blood libel in just that way. All of her speeches were based on defending all conservatives, not herself. She was “saddened” at the first news of the shooting, but she never implied that her defense was for herself. As a mother of a 9 yr old, she felt the pain of that little girl’s death; of course she did. I resent your implications.
I DIDN’T say it was an “issue” FRiend, I related a story to let you know that this isn’t some “distant third cousin, twice removed” or “black sheep” of the Bush family, but a member of the inner circle, a Prescott, and that this is almost certainly the “officially sanctioned” view of that coterie or clique. From Mrs. Barbara Bush to Karl Rove to David Frum to this individual, they are obviously 100% against Governor Sarah Palin and working just as hard as the MSM, Democrats, academia, Hollywood and nutroots to take her down. Comprende?
this Business Insider is pure trash. They should realize that Palin was blamed for the shooting and she was responding. but instead they ramble on about how she shouldn’t have responded to accusations. Hypocrisy at its finest.
Excellent point.
John Ellis is all about his cousin Jeb getting elected in 2016. That means that the Reagan wing of the Party can’t make a comeback.
Nor can the rank and file have a voice in what goes on.
Ellis’ analysis couldn’t be more wrongheaded. People who don’t fight back, lose. Look what happened to cousin George.
Best,
Chris
Sarah wasn't talking about her FEELINGS in that video. She was talking about how a competing ideology can be maligned, and the people who espouse it DEMONIZED by the entire media for several days, without it being questioned, or, for the most part, challenged. With coverage of the shootings 24/7 for three days, just what do you think most folks listening to, reading, or watching, for all that time would come to believe?
We complained for 8 years that George W. Bush didn't fight back against the lies told about him, and his administration, yet, when Sarah tries to do it, some conservatives put her down for it. No, she wasn't shot at, LITERALLY, but she certainly was attacked figuratively, and she had every right to stand up for we Tea Partiers who were blamed, for herself, and other conservative commentators who were falsely accused of spurring the actions of a seriously unhinged young man.
Not saying that Zero still can't screw this up, because he is supremely arrogant. . . .
Needless to say, also a Yaley. Sarah (Idaho) must be reminded to remember her place.
The mentality of social metaphysics causes one to be afraid to speak the truth because they are afraid that others might disapprove and one might become unpopular. I hope that she does not ever regret telling the truth.
John Ellis is a first cousin to Jeb Bush.
So noted above.
Jerks like this only strengthen our resolve.
The upshot is the awareness Sarah will acquire from this protracted outrage.
“She was saddened at the first news of the shooting, but she never implied that her defense was for herself. “
You are so right. Gov Palin is self-less...
