If you listen to most media reports, the Democrats continue to sputter along after a browbeating at the polls in November while Republicans are poised to usher in a new era of governance and "austerity". But what those reports largely fail to mention is that all is not so tidy for the GOP.
In fact, things are downright contentious as Tea Party Republicans struggle to take control of the party away from establishment Republicans. Nowhere is this growing rift more apparent than in the media presence and persona of Sarah Palin.
And it is likely that Palin will continue to serve as the tableau on which the party drafts its future. Longtime Republican commentator Charles Krauthammer has argued that Palin has no business in the Republican primary because while she may appeal to the blood-lust of conservative primary voters her candidacy would be a major flop in a general election.
Now George Will has come out in a pre-emptive strike against a Palin presidential run. On the Sunday morning talk show circuit Will said that a Palin nomination would serve as a "secret weapon" guaranteeing President Obama would serve a second term. According to Will, the only hope for the party is that Palin is currently making too much money in the private sector to be tempted back into public service.
Both Will and Krauthammer pull no punches when it comes to Palin and their critiques carry weight within the beltway. But just how far those opinions reach outside of Washington is not as clear. Palin remains a divisive figure, both beloved and reviled. And certainly the media can't get enough of her which may be enough to keep her as a contender for 2012.
As we get closer to the Iowa primaries it will be interesting to watch the conversation around Palin evolve as Republicans sort out just which "branch" of their party will rule. My guess is we'll hear an increasingly nasty tone from the likes of Will and Krauthammer if the Tea Party Republicans find success or, just as likely, stage an insurrection as establishment Republicans balk at a platform of pure financial "austerity". But if the party loyals keep power then the idea of a Palin presidential candidacy will sound like the bad joke it is.
...In 1978, Krauthammer quit medical practice to direct planning in psychiatric research for the Jimmy Carter administration, and began contributing to The New Republic magazine. During the presidential campaign of 1980, Krauthammer served as a speech writer to Vice President Walter Mondale....
...In January 1981, Krauthammer began his journalistic career, joining The New Republic as a writer and editor....
...on domestic issues, Krauthammer is a supporter of legalized abortion; an opponent of the death penalty; an intelligent design critic and an advocate for the scientific consensus on evolution, calling the religion-science controversy a false conflict; a supporter of embryonic stem cell research using embryos discarded by fertility clinics with restrictions in its applications; and a longtime advocate of radically higher energy taxes to induce conservation....

With good reason(s) , though I am no fan of the RINO establishment .
The only bad joke out there is the RINO’s conspiring with the commies to run this country into ruin just so they can dwell in the selfish ecstacy of power.
They get more disgusting every day. Bring it on boys and girls, real patriots are ready to stomp yer arses.
I think Herman & Palin need to meet in a cave somewhere and turn these elitist one-world scum into sausages.

With good reason?! And what would those good reasons be? Because she can’t win? Like Mike Castle should’ve been the one in Delaware? Like Murkowski in Washington?

Please tell us who to vote for, then. We’re all ears...
The GOP establishment is liberal blue-blood scum. Has been since the 60s. RINO bastards.
They should have made her Party chairperson. It’s a win-win.
Ten-four on Krauthammer. And although I used to think George Will was some kind of conservative, it becomes more and more obvious to me that a guy who was on the payroll of that scumbag magazine for as many years as he has cannot be a true Conservative.
sush is another deluded Republican that believes the tripe and platitudes put out by the GOP RINOs.
Conservatives to the RNC:
This is your last chance. Embrace conservative principles or all your voters are belong to us in 2012.
Two ObamaBOTs and RomneyBOTs have something to say.
Who cares?
GOP Conservatives who listen to Krauthammer, the
Mondale-Carter writer, are STUPID, STUPID, STUPID.
He is just another bought misogynist saboteur.
0bam@ can ‘win’. Bill Clinton can ‘win’. Hey, even Jimmy Carter can ‘win’ too.
The Presidential election is not some baseball/football game. It's serious business in perilous times for our nation. We don't care who you think can ‘win’. We want the one who will create the environment so that the people can take our country back to the glory days where we belong.
Read my digital lips: we don't need no stinkin' RINO's.
Vast RINO-wing conspiracy...
Yes you are.
