Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin have the strongest support among potential candidates for the Republican party's presidential nomination in 2012, according to the results of a Gallup poll released on Thursday, with strong showings also turned in by Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich.
The poll of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents showed that 19 percent support Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, while 16 percent support Palin, the former governor of Alaska and the GOP's vice presidential nominee in 2008.
Former Arkansas Governor Huckabee and former House Speaker Gingrich received the support of 12 percent and 9 percent, respectively, while Rep. Ron Paul, R-Tex., also has a notable following and is supported by 7 percent of those surveyed.
Less well known candidates such as Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, and Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., received less than 5 percent support.
Gallup noted that better-known candidates such as Romney and Palin tend to perform better in early tests of support for presidential nominations.
At the same time, the group said that Republicans have historically nominated the early front-runner as the party's presidential candidate.
I don’t believe this poll for a second! Palin yes. Romney? NO...more like Jim DeMint second!
....or was he even in the poll?
Oh, there better not be. Although, despite any polls I think the GOP is going to try to shove Romney down our throats. It’s gonna be ugly.
Just go away Romney....
Romney. Blech! He needs an automatic “GAG” every time his name is mentioned.
Largely a name recognition poll 2 years out.
I would say that from these percentages, the GOP field is wide open. I suspect that there are many, such as myself, that are still looking for someone other than the ones mentioned. We need someone with gravitas.
Three words: Paul's a loon.
Mike Pence would be my #1.
It is easy to understand why a RINO would support Romney over Palin. What is not explainable is why a conservative would support Huck over Palin. I'd suspect a good many of them might be the social justice/economic populist types who would be Democrats if the Democrats had not slid off the left end of the political spectrum.
But too many of them consider themselves good conservatives who may be more impressed with Huck's social conservative credentials than they are with Sarah's. Don't ask me to explain why. I can't. Can anybody?
Palin~Bachman 2012. Pa-Bach's a bitch!
Dembicile cranial rupture will become such a daily occurrence that schoolkids will be taught how to mop up brain-matter safely, so as not to inadvertently contract PDS or other crippling forms of Dembicile Dementia.
8^D
Romney Care = unelectable now.
Two words: President Palin.
Probably not the wisest meme to start off, LOL, but I like it.
YEAH, I know...but we could do worse than those two together.
I used to be pro-Mitt, now I’m a bit tempered....RD
> “We need someone with gravitas.”
.
No, we definitely do not need any “gravitas.”
We need someone that understands that everything that government has done for the last 100 years has to be undone post haste, and is willing and motivated to do it.
That is why Palin is the only qualified candidate on the horizon.
.
DeMint has done his best to communicate that he has no interest in the presidency, and plans to try for senate majority leader.
That is good, because that is where he would be most valuable. He knows who and what is wrong in the senate, and how to fix it.
Yup!
> “What is more curious is that Huck is a RINO as well, but most of his supporters do not see themselves as RINO’s.”
.
Most of Huck’s supporters do not know what Huck stands for, and are of the erroneous belief that he is a committed Christian.
