Winners and losers: The August 24 primary edition (#1: Sarah Palin)
The Washington Post's The Fix ^ | August 25, 2010 | Chris Cillizza

Posted on 08/25/2010 8:26:10 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It was an amazing night -- and morning -- as the final primary day of the summer delivered a series of upsets in Senate, gubernatorial and House races.

The Fix is still a little groggy from our live-blogging of the proceedings but we are never too tired to sift through election results to find some of the less obvious winners and losers from the primary night that was.

Our take is below. Have winners and losers of your own? The comments section awaits.

WINNERS

Sarah Palin: Just when it looked like her influence in Republican primary fights was fading, Palin came back with a vengeance last night -- as all five of her endorsed candidates appeared headed to victories including Alaska attorney Joe Miller who led Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski with 98 percent of precincts reporting. Both Murkowski and Miller blamed/credited Palin with the result, which is rightly seen as the biggest upset of the 2010 cycle to date. The message? In Republican primaries -- particularly small turnout affairs -- the energy and enthusiasm that Palin can help create is invaluable.

Kendrick Meek: Meek's wide victory over billionaire Jeff Greene in last night's Senate Democratic primary in Florida should convince (at least some) of the doubters who don't think he has a chance to be competitive against former state House Speaker Marco Rubio (R) and Gov. Charlie Crist (I) this fall. And, given the wildly unpredictable nature of the Florida political landscape, anyone who tells you what is going to happen next in the Senate race (or any race) in the state is just not telling the truth.

“you are likely better off in a third party, or you have allowed the obsession with McCain to become personal.”

Well said!

And who do you endorse?

Have any idea yet or are you just a nay-sayer?

Yeah, let’s nominate a Duncan Hunter and have another Goldwater 1964 debacle, but we’ll all feel good about our “principles” and in the end, that’s all that matters, right?

Or, on the flip side of your argument: Let's nominate another Bush, McCain, or Dole and have more RINO's damage the conservative agenda with their version of big gub'ment spending. In fact, the only thing worse than a tax-and-spend liberal is a person who cuts taxes and then outspends the democrats (like Bush did and McCain and Dole would have).

I think there are very winnable, true conservative candidates out there.

How can they say her influence was fading? In GA for example Karen Handel was way behind and in trouble of not even making the runoff before Palin endorsed her. Handel won the 1st round comfortably and ended up virtually tied in the runoff with a guy who was a long time GA congressman and was supported by much if not all of the GA GOP establishment and the other primary candidates.

Apparently her campaign made some mistakes going negative towards the end of the race or she would have won. Also the 3 week lag time hurt her momentum. As it was she ended up less than .5% behind. That’s not a bad final result given where she started out. I think she definitely did better as a result of the Palin endorsement than she otherwise would have. Same with some of the others she endorsed who lost but put up very respectable showings.

I don’t really think endorsements matter that much anyway in elections. I know I’ve never voted for someone because they were endorsed by someone else. Sure, it may help a bit, but in the end it’s not really a factor. Basically I think Palin’s endorsement provides an initial boost of coverage and publicity and then it’s up to the candidate to do the rest. Some do and some don’t. Local factors come into play.

Also, I don’t even remember endorsements being a big deal earlier. In 2006 I don’t remember the media paying attention to Obama’s endorsements in primaries or to Hillary’s. I don’t remember them paying attention to endorsements on the GOP side. I don’t remember any coverage of who Kerry endorsed in 2002 or who W endorsed in 1998.

I think this whole endorsement thing is just an excuse for them to attack Palin over.

McRino would have won without Palin....JD Hayworth lost a secure district house seat because he is not a man people in AZ care for. To beat McRino....run a candidate people feel fine to get behind...Hayworth was not one of those.

Breathing is an excuse to attack Gov. Palin if you’re a jourbalist.

“I beleive there are a substantial number of Arizona voters who chose to express their regret for voting for Obummer by voting for McVain.”

That and it’s an open primary so ALL voting demonrats voted for Juan as well as a portion of (I) voters (or what we call demonrats in higing). The margin would have been much much smaller if AZ didn’t have open primaries I would guess.

It's hilarious. Palin supporters want all the credit in the world when some candidate somewhere wins because of a Palin endorsement, but when it comes to McCain, well, he would have won anyhow, so...

"I think there are very winnable, true conservative candidates out there."

Quite possibly there are, but no one's ever heard of them. And if you think that a white man is going to beat Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton in 2012, you're living in the 20th Century.

“McCain has one term at most left in him. “

...and by God hold on to your seat bub because this crazy old coot is going out in style, believe that. His crazy is going to overtake him after he wins again and revenge against those ‘conservative tea bagger types’ will be swift and painful. Look for him at every turn possible to stick it to the GOP and Conservatives alike.

Ah, so now blacks and women are the only ones considered "electable" in the formerly grand Old party, eh? Interesting.

How did I "twist your words"?

This is what you said:

I think a white man has a very good chance; America regrets its racist vote that put an unskilled, unexperienced person in charge of the greatest power the world has ever known.

LOL a one trick pony.

Let's turn this around. Who are you going to endorse when it turns out Palin's not running?

What you said! There’s a lot of struggling here to try and `square the (Sarah) circle.’
Another herring here is the attempt to change the subject from Palin’s support of McCain (AZ-D) to her future political plans.
Why are McCain/Palin supporters so peckish today? Their guy won!

Hayworth lost by 30 points.

That's his own and stupid AZ voters' damn fault, not Sarah.
