Winners and losers: The August 24 primary edition (#1: Sarah Palin)
The Washington Post's The Fix ^ | August 25, 2010 | Chris Cillizza

Posted on 08/25/2010 8:26:10 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It was an amazing night -- and morning -- as the final primary day of the summer delivered a series of upsets in Senate, gubernatorial and House races.

The Fix is still a little groggy from our live-blogging of the proceedings but we are never too tired to sift through election results to find some of the less obvious winners and losers from the primary night that was.

Our take is below. Have winners and losers of your own? The comments section awaits.

WINNERS

Sarah Palin: Just when it looked like her influence in Republican primary fights was fading, Palin came back with a vengeance last night -- as all five of her endorsed candidates appeared headed to victories including Alaska attorney Joe Miller who led Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski with 98 percent of precincts reporting. Both Murkowski and Miller blamed/credited Palin with the result, which is rightly seen as the biggest upset of the 2010 cycle to date. The message? In Republican primaries -- particularly small turnout affairs -- the energy and enthusiasm that Palin can help create is invaluable.

Kendrick Meek: Meek's wide victory over billionaire Jeff Greene in last night's Senate Democratic primary in Florida should convince (at least some) of the doubters who don't think he has a chance to be competitive against former state House Speaker Marco Rubio (R) and Gov. Charlie Crist (I) this fall. And, given the wildly unpredictable nature of the Florida political landscape, anyone who tells you what is going to happen next in the Senate race (or any race) in the state is just not telling the truth.

I can see where a close race would benefit from Palin's endorsement, active or otherwise. In Mccain's case, I just do not see her dragging him over the line. It appears he had plenty of gas to get himself over, say 2:1 in advantage.

It appears he would have won regardless if she backed him or not.

He most likely would have won even if she endorsed JD.

However, if she did endorse JD, then he lost, many on this site would be refering to her as the thankless bitch.

Picking a political candidate is always a multiple-choice question.

So give me the list of who will be running in 2012, synopsis their positions, and highlights of their debate performances, and I will be happy to answer te question.

J.D. Hayworth did an admirable job running against Juan McAmnesty. But the reality is that is wasn’t enough to oust McCain...which was a long shot at best. Palin’s endorsement had little impact on this race.

You are wrong if you think that Palin’s endorsement of McCain made any significant difference in Arizona.

I think it is more likely that allowing Democrats to vote in the Republican primary had more to do with the outcome than any endorsements.

The blot created by her endorsement of McCain pretty much overshadows any good she might have done.

Give it a rest.

McCain has one term at most left in him. The Joe Millers and Nikki Haileys are the future. McCain will become as irrelevant as the second-tier 39 year old QB who still manages to make the squad. McCain was the likely winner anyway, and Palin has promoted some good folks who beat establishment types who want to go along to get along (Murkowski being a prime example).

If you have a problem with her bringing in a bunch of good new talent because she endorsed one old, bad apple, you are likely better off in a third party, or you have allowed the obsession with McCain to become personal.

Yeah, I always get the run-around from you people.

Name a non-back scratcher then, a non-payback type. Fish or cut bait. If you think there is someone better, candidate or no, name them.

Senator McCain picked Governor Palin to be his running mate and quite possibly the Vice President of the United States of America. If she had backstabbed him you’d be on here complaining that she didn’t have any loyalty and was therefore not “presidential timber” for 2012.

Wrong. Most of us PRINCIPLED conservatives would have sent her a check for election to the presidency. I'm tired of backstabbers and political hacks on both sides of the isle. She had everybody's respect and support right up to the point she endorsed, and campaigned for, the most high profile RINO plaguing our party!

EV, so pro-life groups in California are flaming libs who were endorsing another flaming lib.

I’m sorry, I don’t think that is going to fly.

I have listened to Fiorina. She is NOT a carbon copy of McCain. I will fully admit that McCain is NOT a conservative but Fiorina if you listen closely is not recommending amnesty for illegals or for cap and trade.

The Palinoia Posse is like peeling an onion. Every time someone rebuts your jibes about Governor Palin, you pull a different one out of your bag of tricks. I’m bone-tired of people trying to pull down a woman who could turn this country around. Enjoy 4 more years of Barack Hussein Muhammed Obama, Jr.

Otherwise, you can be sure that McCain, as a political pragmatist won’t stray too far off the ranch in a Republican controlled Senate. Nothing in it for him, “maverick” or not. He’ll play along to ensure his own status.

Are you talking about McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Liebermann, McCain-Cantwell? That McCain? Now he'll start being a good Republican? Really?

Frankly, they're just liars.

Yeah, let’s nominate a Duncan Hunter and have another Goldwater 1964 debacle, but we’ll all feel good about our “principles” and in the end, that’s all that matters, right?

Pretty ironic thing to say in the context of the continued control of the GOP by McCain Republicans.

But, I'm pretty sure you won't see the irony.

One vote (two, counting Linseed Grahamnesty) can control the US Senate now? Explain that to us, since we were taught that it takes 51 or 60 votes. BTW, I doubt that Joe Miller will be in that clique.

“The blot created by her endorsement of McCain pretty much overshadows any good she might have done.”

Oh, please! Get real, EV! McCain was going to win regardless and she was repaying a political debt with that endorsement. From what I’ve read, Hayworth wasn’t a very credible challenger.

Palin made zero diff in this race.

Hayworth was/is a buffoon. Who by the way... was one of the biggest spenders during his years in congress.
