Alaska Primary Election Results Winner: Joe Miller Beats Lisa Murkowski?
Right Pundits ^ | August 24th, 2010

Posted on 08/25/2010 12:44:16 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

In a shocking upset, Joe Miller is the winner of the Alaska Senate primary if the current vote projection holds for the Republican primary election. With half of the precincts reporting, Miller holds a slight 51.8 to 48.2% lead over the GOP incumbent senator. The vote lead has been consistent during the early counting and even increased slightly as more precincts have been counted in Alaska.

Joe Miller has been a heavy underdog in pre-election polls, trailing the senator by 20-30 points. Nobody thought this race would be close.

In fact, the mainstream media has been using the Alaska primary challenge from Miller as evidence that Sarah Palin’s endorsements are not all that useful. Palin endorsed Joe Miller several weeks ago. The press assumed that Lisa would beat Miller easily as the polls predicted, which fed a certain group-think that is comforting to liberals.

Even if the sitting senator manages to come back from the vote deficit, any victory for her will be razor thin. And that is appearing more and more unlikely as the evening progresses. In reality Palin is the most powerful voice in politics today. Her endorsements generate interest, campaign donations, grassroots support, and results at the ballot box.

The meme that Palin endorsements are irrelevant began surfacing in early August and became an oft repeated mantra by liberal television commentators in the mainstream media. If the Alaska senate results hold up for Joe Miller, the former governor of Alaska will have shut them up permanently.

Right Pundits will stay up late to give you the final Alaska primary results for Joe Miller just as soon as we can make an early call officially. We are almost there. Even as this brief piece was written, Joe Miller extended his lead slightly while more precincts in the state were counted. The winner of the Alaska primary appears to be Joe Miller, and Sarah Power will be undeniable even to her critics. We will make the call official soon, assuming it is warranted.

So what is known about Joe Miller’s biography? He has eight kids and a game wife named Kathleen Miller. He grew up in Kansas but moved west to Alaska at the age of 16. He holds a law degree and various positions of local authority in the judiciary, including that of U.S. Magistrate Judge in Fairbanks Alaska. He earned a Bronze Star for bravery in the Gulf War after graduating high in his class from West Point.

What an election result! Reader comments welcome.

Mesta Machine just posted to me on the thread I've stayed on all night!

ALASKA EXCLUSIVE 4:20 a.m. ET:

In a phone conversation from Anchorage just now, Miller campaign staffer Harmony Shields said that the results are “probably going to be inconclusive tonight,” although Miller’s lead is now nearly 3,000 votes with about two-thirds of precincts reporting, and they believe they will win.

Miller gave a short speech to the crowd at the Egan Center, thanking his volunteers.

“”I would expect Sarah’s going to be very embarrassed by the results Tuesday,” said Republican pollster Marc Hellenthal, who is not involved in the primary. “She’s been delivering everybody else’s state but she won’t be able to deliver her own.””

Hellenthal is dirt. Had his wife file an election complaint against a GOP candidate:

Then Palin stepped in and mccain stopped looking back

How many Palin supporters do you think voted for McCain because of her endorsement?

I put the number at close to zero.

77% is "early returns?" Sen. Murkowski trailing Tea Party-backed challenger in early returns By Shane D'Aprile - 08/25/10 04:52 AM ET Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is in danger of becoming the third incumbent senator to lose in the 2010 election cycle. Attorney Joe Miller appears on the verge of a stunning upset in Alaska's Republican Senate primary but the race has not been officially called and could be headed for a recount.
The Tea Party-backed candidate leads Murkowski by less than 3,000 votes with 77 percent of precincts reporting. The final results may not be known for a week, according to the Anchorage Daily News. The Alaska Division of Elections said over 16,000 absentee ballots were requested and, as of Monday night, only 7,600 had been returned, the paper reported. With the margin so close and absentee ballots coming in until September 8th, it could hold up final results. The race is reminiscent of Rep. Don Young's (R) primary in 2008, which ended in a recount and dragged on for some three weeks after Election Day. Young was eventually declared the winner by just over 500 votes.

Murkowski wasn't initially expected to face a strong challenge in 2010, but Miller's campaign got an early jolt from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and the Tea Party Express.

While Tea Party activists have provided the fuel for several primary upsets this election season, the conventional wisdom ahead of Alaska’s contest was that it would mark a rare success for the incumbent this primary season.

Murkowski did not shy away from her Washington credentials on the campaign trail. She argued that her position in the Senate is crucial for the state. Murkowski is the ranking Republican on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and, as such, is in a prime position to deliver for Alaska, which is heavily reliant on the oil industry. Murkowski also has a seat on the Appropriations Committee.

Ahead of the primary, Miller's campaign and the Tea Party Express were claiming last minute momentum and touting internal polls that they said had the race much closer than public polling showed.
Several public polls, however, showed Murkowski with a strong lead. The Tea Party Express also dropped more than $500,000 running TV and radio ads to aid Miller's campaign and he had the backing of Palin and of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, both rumored presidential contenders in 2012. Palin, who endorsed Miller in June, recorded a last-minute robocall for the campaign that went out to voters Monday. She also posted a fundraising appeal on her Facebook page Monday trumpeting Miller's efforts to raise $30,000 for a late TV buy. She did not campaign with him, but she did tweet early Wednesday morning: “Keeping fingers crossed, powder dry, prayers upward.”

Miller told the Anchorage Daily News Tuesday that Palin was key to his success and said GOP primary voters responded to his message of fiscal discipline and smaller government.

"I think that they see the entitlement state, the federal government, growing too large," Miller said. "They understand because they have to balance their checkbooks."

It's hard to accuse Murkowski of being caught flat-footed by the challenge, though. Given 2010's brutal anti-incumbent environment, Murkowski took Miller seriously. She spent more than $2 million on the primary, including a last minute attack ad aimed at Miller that might have just worked against her.

Murkowski launched an ad Monday that featured an exchange between conservative Alaska radio host Dan Fagan and Miller. In it, Fagan angrily accuses Miller of distorting Murkowski's record on healthcare.

But the radio host endorsed Miller against Murkowski, labeling her "liberal Lisa" in a column on the website of the Alaska Standard.

Fagan also lambasted Murkowski during his radio show Tuesday afternoon, accusing her of ducking debates with Miller.

"It is a ruling class mentality," Fagan said of Murkowski. "It is the mentality of 'I'm Lisa Murkowski. My daddy was a Senator. I'm a Senator. We are the royal family if Alaska and you will vote for me.'"
Murkowski was appointed to the seat in a controversial move by her father, former Gov. Frank Murkowski, in 2002. Despite vows from both parties that she would be ousted in 2004, Murkowski won her bid for a full-term that year.
There's no way to know for sure whether the last-minute flap over the Murkowski attack ad and Fagan's backing of Miller was in any way conclusive, but it likely added to Miller's late momentum.

Another potential factor that may have worked in Miller's favor Tuesday was a ballot measure that would mandate parental notification of abortion for teenagers 17 and under. Miller told the Anchorage Daily News Tuesday that supporters of the measure likely helped increase his vote share against Murkowski.

Murkowski would be the third sitting Senator to lose a primary challenge this year. Sens. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) and Bob Bennett (R-Utah) both lost their reelection bids.
The winner of the GOP nomination in Alaska is in a strong position for the general election and will face Democratic nominee Sitka Mayor Scott McAdams in his first run for federal office. http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/senate-races/115713-tea-party-backed-candidate-holds-narrow-lead-over-sen-murkowski-

A bit off topic, but the last paragraph of the article you posted is very interesting:

The Senate race was close, but in the House District 12 Republican race, the three Republican candidates are probably all wishing they could have knocked on a few more doors. Eric Feige of Chickaloon finished with 33.70 percent of the votes, while Pete Fellman of Delta Junction picked up 33.20 percent of the votes and Don Haase of Valdez had 33.10 percent. The vote totals were 666, 656 and 654, about as close as possible to a dead heat.
