A new study of the Tea Party movement released on Wednesday shows former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as the leader among the conservative, grassroots activists when it comes to their 2012 choice for president.
Among the 229 Tea Party supporters surveyed by the Sam Adams Alliance, Palin brought in 23 percent when up against 19 other candidates, according to the report. It is the first of three studies commissioned by the free-market non-profit group to analyze Tea Party activists before Novembers midterm elections.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney followed with 9.2 percent, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took in 8.7 percent and Newt Gingrich garnered 7.7 percent of Tea Party activists support.
Although activists tend to support GOP candidates for president, the report found that some who largely identified as Republicans before they joined up as Tea Partiers have dropped their party affiliation with the GOP as they became more involved in the movement.
Among new activists polled, 74 percent originally identified themselves as Republican, with 20 percent saying they are independents. But since claiming to join the movement, theres been a near 30-point drop in affiliation among Tea Partiers with the Republican Party, according to the group, with many activists switching to independent, Tea Party or Libertarian party labels.
Not a surprise. 23 percent is about right. I am surprised she did not get 40 percent. I know there were a few other candidates in the mix. She will get everyone but the disapproval which is about 48 percent. Her approvals are 40 percent so I don’t know where the other 17 percent went. If I were her I would study this to find out what she needs to do to get that other 17 percent support.
Romney?????
“Conservatives Activists” should know better that to support Romney at all. He should have come in with 0%
A few other candidates?
There were 19 other candidates.
Huge, huge number of candidates; therefore she did quite well to garner 23%.
That was well more than double what Romney got, and equal to Romney plus the next two vote-getters combined.
Romney, Pawlenty, Huck, Newt, Santorum... I don’t think so.
Palin is the only one.
I understand that but her approvals have her at 40 percent. So who did the other 17 percent support. If she has 40 percent supporters than she should have 40 percent Tea Partiers in her column. There is something that these Tea Partiers are seeing in other candidates that Palin is not providing them. I would seriously find that out if I were her.
you betcha...
any hopes of a palin/gingrich, palin/ryan ticket?
After it was down to only 2 candidates left and he couldn't even beat that RINO McCain.
Romney is poison. He has been trying to undercut Sarah Palin since most of his campaign workers were absorbed by McCain in 2008, after he lost the primary. I don’t know who is more afraid of her, Romney or Chris Matthews.
ML/NJ
Really? Did you vote?
What does this mean for 2012?

It means Romney is a rich liberal spoiler who sucks.
So far, but I would like to see Jim DeMint or Paul Ryan.
Palin will be the next REAL President, period.

Romney = John McCain + Bob Dole
Simple - all she has to do is get the DBM to stop bashing her every chance they get.
The fact is that she so terrifies the whiners on the left that they make up jabs to take at her to try to keep her negatives up.
