Do Sarah Palin's NYC mosque comments reflect estrangement from elite opinion?
The Politico ^ | July 20, 2010 | Various

Contributors discuss Sarah Palin's comments about the Ground Zero mosque in light of her divergence from elite opinion.

Brian Katulis, senior fellow, Center for American Progress

It’s unfortunate, though unsurprising, that the attention-seeking former half-term governor is carelessly exploiting the Sept. 11 attacks in this way. Suggesting, as Sarah Palin did, that the presence of a mosque near ground zero is a “stab in the heart” of America is insulting to core values that make our country great: tolerance and pluralism.

Tom Korologos, former ambassador, Republican strategist

Whether the number of Palin supporters is 16 percent of Washington’s elite — now there’s a “wow” group that represents the country’s mood — or the 38 percent nationwide or somewhere in between, in the end, a minority of a minority does not a majority make.

Brad Bannon, president, Bannon Communications Research

Mayor Michael Bloomberg sees the construction of a mosque near ground zero as an opportunity for racial healing. Sarah Palin sees the mosque as an excuse to inflame the racial passions that serve her so well.

Ross Baker, political scientist, Rutgers University

The Washington elite has had more experience than the general public in spotting phonies and opportunists who line their pockets by feeding raw meat to gullible people. If all Palin can do is double her elite support score with the broader electorate it won’t get her a presidential nomination but guarantees her prime space in People magazine.

James Carafano, senior research fellow, Heritage Foundation

The fact that everyone obsesses over Sarah Palin’s Twitter and that official Washington hates her pretty much confirms that she must be a national voice — get used to it.

Given that a huge percentage of these barbarians have declared war on us (and most of the rest remain silent or rejoice at our destruction in secret) that’s just plain old common sense, Alaska style.

Political Correctness:
”A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical liberal minority,
and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media,
which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible
to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

(This is why I caution folks to NEVER shake hands with leftists: They spend their miserable, self-deluded lives happily producing and picking up those turds and they never wash their hands.)

By spreading this definition around, perhaps we can employ one of the more effective methods of deflating and defeating the fools who practice and promote it: RIDICULE. (Number 5 from Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”)

Unless stopped – and soon – PC will DESTROY Western Civilization — if it hasn’t already.

PASS IT ON!!

(Credit hereby given to my late cousin Karl Benton Clark for either creating this definition or bringing it to my attention

“tolerance and pluralism”

Don’t forget “diversity”. /s

This is such crap. These are NOT the values that make America great.

Obama will soon make Muslims a political minority. Wait and see.

Also, the fact that no Islamic organization came out in public and denounced terrorism should not be overlooked as we bend over backwards to show Muslims how tolerant we are.

These people are crazy. They are paving the way for those who seek to either kill or enslave them.

I miss real leadership.

I hope it is divergent from “elite” (BTW, what the hell does “elite” mean and who named them that?) opinion. It needs to be. She’s speaking the truth on this issue. She understands that we are AT WAR with Islam. Those who ignore that fact are destined to be killed as infidels or become dhimmi’s.

An easy thing to do, as the Jewish voting block in New York is amongst the largest and also the wealthiest in the city, with many giving him support. Pissing off Muslims in NYC is not as "ballsy" as you may think.

Bloomberg doesn't have to rely on campaign contributions from ANYONE, and has no desire to waste his time "stopping a mosque" as any attempt to do so would be in violation of US civil rights law, unless zoning for the area were changed without the intent being to keep out a mosque. The city already spends millions defending itself from lawsuits every year, and picking a high profile fight like this would only make things worse.

Palin is a real person. The Elitists hate her for that.

I am the farthest thing from being part of a so-called elite, but still want somebody with competance and leadership skills who can articulate their message above and beyond the masses and the mediots. "Ordinary people" don't usually have these, and Sarah (who is NOT ordinary, just a mediocre public figure) does not.

We don't really have an elite in this country in the classical sense, btw. Just a bunch of self-important bourgeois douchebags who think just because they are on television that they are "important." The fact that such fools obsess over Sarah Palin just shows you how un-Elite and arriviste they are.

Please observe that I did not call the "important" people "Elite". I called them "elitest". The difference is that they think they are much better than others. They deserve to tell you how to live your life. They are that good (in their own minds).

It sounds like you are not a big Sarah fan. Oh well [shrug] that's what makes horse races. I see Sarah as very much a real person who has run a business and served in executive positions at multiple levels. I think she understands the world better than many in Washington. I think she's smart enough not to think that she can tell me how to live me life. She wouldn't have a clue -- and she knows it. She is, for me, very far from being an "elitest", which is one reason why I like her.

May I ask who you would support in 2012?

Demint/Daniels or Daniels/Demint. Competent and boring white guys always make the most effective leaders. :)

I'd be happy to vote for either of those tickets.

Whew! I was worried you'd say "Romney"!

I usually like Codevilla, but he really needs to go back to reading Pareto or Mosca, let alone Macchiavelli.

Let's leave "the People versus the Powerful" to the Dems. What we really have in this country, and have for my most of my lifetime (I was born in 1976) has been a "conflict" between the Left-bourgeoisie and a Right-bourgeoisie. Of course, with the importation of millions of poor and working class folks from south of the border, this dynamic could likely change.

So, if the mosque is built, and a Catholic priest flies a lear jet into it, (poetic), can we build a Catholic Church across the street?

Obviously, a priest wouldn’t do that, but wouldn’t it be the same? I wonder if there would any commentary in the press about that one.

Of course, it would be George Bush’s fault, so I guess the point is moot.

I don’t care to tolerate murderers in our midst. Islam is a political philosophy with religious excuses to underpin it.
