Former U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey has opened up a 14-point lead among likely voters in his bid to deny U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter a sixth term, according to the latest Daily News/Franklin & Marshall Poll.

Poll director G. Terry Madonna said that the results reflect a growing national Republican resurgence mixed with a lack of Democratic enthusiasm as the two parties battle over issues like health care and the economy.

The Pubbies should say:

“Most of those big spender Republicans are gone, thank you very much voters, and if any of our guys get out of line on spending again, we’ll take the necessary corrective actions.”

Alright, GOP, both chambers:

"Rick Santorum must be kicking himself right now."

True!. However Toomey is a more appealing candidate at this point. I like Santorum but he is damaged goods in this State and that is why he lost to a lightweight like Casey.

As far as Specter is concerned, his predicament could not have happened to a more deserving slug.

How long before he his pushed off that dem wagon that he jumped on? The man without any class and shame is going to be a man also without a senate seat. Plenty of room under the Fauxbama bus. Those wheels just keep on going round and round.

I will not rule out Rick Santorum. To be honest a candidate like him or George Allen should come out of wilderness to mainstream of politics. This might be the best time. They both are very conservative candidates, especially George Allen as a very good chance to be a viable Presidential candidate.

This is great news. You just know life has to suck for specter these days.He makes out like a bandit when he is retired but at least we get the satisfaction of watching him get his ass handed to him this election.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Fast Eddie Rendell jumped in to save the Dems.

I hear that both Dubya and Santorum will be campaigning for Specter again this year since they both don’t care for Toomey.

And that is how Santorum lost me...Toomey should have been in long ago...and we would have had 6 Arlen-free years already.

“And that is how Santorum lost me...”

Big time. What did Toomey lose by, 51-49? Last minute blitz by Santorum and Bush pushed him over the line. So everytime for the past 6 years, when Specter knifed me in the back, I resented Santorum.

Sarah Palin would be wise to think about that.

I’m doubtful even Fast Eddie could save this seat. He is not as popular here as he once was, esp. in this time of anti-incumbency.

Democrats better come up with a more attractive candidate soon in PA or Toomey will have a cake walk, IMO. The salient issues fit Toomey like a glove.

Sestak is as exciting as cold oatmeal.

I won’t be surprised if Specter doesn’t bow out soon (he should act “like a gentleman”, but he is a bulldog and will probably go down swinging.

With more “act like a lady” arrogance to come, that is a sure thing. The only bad thing is that Specter’s numbers may go so low that he decides not to run and a strong demoRAT runs.
