California: Riggs Preparing 2010 Challenge to Calvert
Roll Call ^ | June 18, 2009 | Josh Kurtz

Here’s a sure sign that commercial real estate broker Chris Riggs is planning to challenge Rep. Ken Calvert in the Republican primary next year: Riggs in recent days has launched Twitter and Facebook sites, and he has also begun to hire consultants and campaign staff. “This race will be a litmus test to see if all the millions of ‘tea party’ attendees across America are really serious about electing officials that run on a limited government, tax lowering platform, as this will be a perfect opportunity to pick off a big tax-and-spend incumbent,” Riggs told the Orange County Register this week.

Riggs is also painting himself as an outsider bent on toppling an ultimate political insider who has spent 17 years in Congress and has been accused of improperly profiting from local land deals.

Until recently, Calvert seemed unbeatable in his Riverside-Orange county district. But last year, he finished less than 3 points ahead of his Democratic challenger, Bill Hedrick. Hedrick, a local school board official, is trying again in 2010 — and this time he’ll have the support of national Democrats, which he lacked last cycle.

Ken Calvert has had tough races in the past, due in part to questions about his ethics. Hopefully, he’ll lose the Republican primary at last.

For a moment, I thought this was Frank Riggs trying for a comeback (hey, if other Republicans can move from south CA to north CA to run for Congress, why not north to south ?).

Haha. I saw “Riggs” and thought the same thing. RINOish in his first term, his ACU rating improved in his latter 2. Then he wussed out of running for reelection against Mike Thompson.

Anyway, Calvert has a big rat target on his back, so if this other Riggs is ok I wouldn’t mind seeing him win.

I think Riggs saw the writing on the wall for his district. That area was trending moonbat rapidly. Daniel Hamburg, the guy who beat him in ‘92 (and whom Riggs beat in a rematch in ‘94), was a Dem who switched to the Green Party after he lost and was their nominee for Governor in ‘98.

There’s actually a Riggs down here that I know that looks uncannily like Frank Riggs, and I wonder if the two are related.

Riggs is originally from Louisville (KY), I don’t know about any family involved in politics. What’s the other Riggs’s name ?
