Conservatives: Would you vote for this man for President?
Posted on 05/14/2009 7:54:47 AM PDT by MadIsh32
Here goes: This presidential candidate talks pro-life, but has a mixed record on abortion, including passing legislation as governor removing restrictions on abortion. In addition, the person he wants as VP is outspoken in his support of pro-choice, warning against candidates who would throw women back into back alley clinics. He talks about Christian faith, but also openly admits he very rarely goes to church. He has been a supporter of 2nd amendment rights, but also openly endorsed the Brady Bill. He wants to balance the budget partly by tax cuts, but mostly by cutting spending back to around 19% OF GDP (roughly what it was back in the 60s). He also wants a committee to oversee and review gov't regulations, and either repeal, scale back, or allow regulations based on cost benefit analyses.

Of course there is a catch to all of this. That would take the fun out of it
This is just a simple statement of selected facts about a candidate. Clearly not an overall picture, but all factually correct

Couldn’t have been Reagan - Reagan and James Brady were shot at the same time, and anything after that would not have been “voted on” by President Reagan. Brady Bill did not pass into law until 1993

It is a flawed argument. before Reagan, the recent ‘Conservative’ presidential standards we had to compare it to where Nixon and Ford, which, by comparison, was a drastic shift to the right. Now we have Reagan as a standard to compare Conservative presidents to, so we build on that.

Agree that Reagan was never in favor of abortion. He had statements saying that which are quite easy to dig up
HOWEVER, despite that his record in CA did show some wiggle room on the issue

Cheney isn’t going to run and I will have to wait and see on Palin’s ability to overcome the liberal media onslaught that is trying to make her into Dan Quayle. Reagan destroyed the liberal media, the same will be required of Palin, I hope you are right.

Whats the point of this thread?
I'm guessing its a means of opening a conversation on the great merits of "moderates" but the poster didn't count on questions.

To see if our greatest President in our lifetime would be subject to and fail the litmus tests we give candidates today
My reaction when I first saw this was the gun legislation would worry me a bit, but the spending plan I liked. Spending is more important to me then 2A issues

If he was running against a guy named Carter or Mondale, then Yes, I’d crawl over broken glass to vote for him.

Not the great “merits” of moderates
Believe me, I despise “moderates” When you have moderates you end up with fiscal moderates more then social moderates
However, I just think we need to re-evaluate where we put our litmus tests. Clearly its not on spending/economic issues or else W never would have been our nominee (compassionate conservatism was a red flag for me)

You left out union member that took on the very powerful communist faction with in his own guild, of which he was elected President.
Also he volunteered and started officer training around 1936.
He also, later in his career, in as much as he saw it, fought, hard, for what he believed in.
None of which applies to Mitt Romney who never served, wouldn’t even go on a limb to fight for a Republican county judge, and doesn’t seem to believe in anything except expediency and checkbooks.

Eww, gag.
For the record my 2 guys right now for 2012 are Sanford or Gary Johnson
More so with Sanford as there are some items that Gary Johnson is in support of which are unrealistic

I know in my heart and soul that abortion is murder, but as long as the overwhelming preponderance of those having abortions are leftists/liberals/Democrats, or their surrogates/constituents, and my other issues are adequately supported, it's one compromise I'll reluctantly make when I vote. They'll eventually abort themselves out of existence.
