Secretary of State Nelson Weighs Bid for US House

Secretary of State Chris Nelson plans to decide by this fall whether to make a bid for the Republican nomination for U.S. House of Representatives.

He can't run for his current job again because of term limits and said publicly at the Lawrence County Lincoln Day dinner that he's looking at the congressional office.

Democratic Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin said she will decide later this summer whether to run for re-election, challenge incumbent Republican Sen. John Thune or run for governor in 2010.

Nelson said what Herseth Sandlin does will play into his decision but won't be the ultimate factor.

Stephanie Herseth is under pressure to stay in Congress, but it’s not overwhelming pressure because ‘Rats are confident that they will retain control of Congress. Whatever her choice, I really hope that Nelson runs.

He'd probably be a strong candidate, though if Herseth runs for re-election to the House, it's gonna be an uphill battle defeating her (Nelson would be the favorite if any other RAT is the nominee). I would hope Nelson shaves the 'stash before embarking on a bid for federal office, right now he's kinda looking like Tom Dewey with glasses to me.

It's really pathetic that the Dakotas, despite going to the GOP presidential candidate by huge margins and having an all-Republican team of statewide officials, never-the-less have RATs as 5 out of 6 of their federal officials (and the one non-RAT has morphed into a big porker). They could really use a "power slate" of big name popular GOP officials for federal office to run as a team, like Mike Rounds to help carry the ticket. I doubt it will happen though.

You make a good point, but Nelson is term-limited. Even if he loses but makes a respectable showing, it’ll put him on the map, like Herseth’s strong showing against Bill Janklow in 2002 did for her.
