UPDATED at 9:20p.m. Roe, Davis running close in 1st District primary UPDATES with early returns in 1st District, Blackburn leading, Davis and Wamp winning. From the Associated Press: By WOODY BAIRD Associated Press Writer

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Early voting returns show congressman David Davis and challenger Phil Roe running close in the Republican primary for the Tennessee’s 1st District seat.

With 21 percent of precincts reporting in the northeast Tennessee district, Roe was barely ahead with 8,901 votes to Davis’ 8,843. Each candidate had just over 49 percent of the vote.

The 1st District GOP primary and the 9th District Democratic primary in Memphis were the tightest congressional races in Tennessee.

Returns were slow in Memphis with no trends established an hour after polls closed. In the 7th District, Republican incumbent Marsha Blackburn took a large lead over challenger Tom Leatherwood.

Democrat Lincoln Davis in the 4th District and Republican Zach Wamp in the 3rd District each defeated token opposition.

Four Tennessee incumbents faced no primary opposition - Republican John Duncan of the 2nd District, and Democrats Jim Cooper of the 5th, Bart Gordon of the 6th and John Tanner of the 8th. ###

The RINO Roe that has run on a "I was raised to give things to others" platform has been leading, but incumbent Davis is coming from behind. I am praying that we don't replace a conservative with ROE, but it's not looking good right now.

At every political level, we are already seeing too many RINO’s defeating truly conservative Republicans all over the U.S. This truly isn’t good news for the entire U.S. conservative movement!

Roe had signs everywhere and painted Davis with the “Big Oil” paintbrush. Davis co-sponsored the energy bill and spoke yesterday on the House floor. It is going to be a shame to have him replaced with the likes of Roe.

That’s good news, at least, Nana.

I didnt know an incumbent was being challenged here. That is unusual. Like Republicans aren’t having a hard enough time this year. What is their beef with Davis? Davis doesn’t sound familiar. Was he just elected in ‘06?

How about Cohen v. the racist over in the other district? I have heard no results there.

Yes, Davis served one term. The last election was close and Davis fought a recount which made many angry. There were 4 or 5 running, and all fairly close. Everyone wanted the guy from their area to win.

I haven’t heard about Cohen yet.

Cohen is on his way to an easy victory around 80% to 20% according to the Memphis TV stations.

The East Tennessee District still close, with 1,000 votes seperating with 65% counted.

Roe struck me as power hungry...it seemed that he was ALWAYS running for whatever office was available at any given moment. I met Davis a couple of times...seemed like a real straight shooter, although he struck me as a bit gullible at times. I’d rather have Davis in there...Roe seems slimy for some reason.

That’s my take on it, too. Even if Davis didn’t have a voting record to go on, Roe is “slick”.

I note that turnout was very light...Congress has a 9% approval rating. Are voters ‘throwing the bums out’?

I’m not sure. Roe contributed a lot of money to his own campaign and received some good donations. One couldn’t drive anywhere without seeing a ROE: “People not Politics” sign. Roe also ran some disgusting commercials that would appeal to those less informed in this area. I suspect it was more name recognition than anything else.

It looks like David Davis could be unseated in the GOP primary. I’ve found no word on how the Cohen-Tinker primary is going.

Yes, it looks like it’s over for poor Davis. We lost a conservative.

Patrick1 said above that Cohen blew Tinker away according to Memphis television.

I found a link, and with 53% of the precincts counted, Phil Roe still leads David Davis by a narrow margin.

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080807/NEWS0206/80807146/1016

Was David Davis a regional candidate from a remote part of the district who was unpopular in the Johnson City area?

Patrick1 was right, Steve Cohen won by an overwhelming margin. I’m no fan of Cohen, but it’s good to see such flagrant race-baiting and Jew-baiting rejected.

I’m just on for a moment to see what was happening. Roe is a RINO from what I understand, and I think it is apparent enough rodents got into the 1st district knowing they had zero chance of electing a Democrat (none has been elected in this district in nearly 130 years) and voted for Roe. If I were Davis, I’d try to see if it was possible to mount an independent candidacy for November.
