Perhaps, Paul suggested, the 15-year presence of the U.S. military forces in Muslim countries may have motivated them.

Paul phrased it very poorly during the debate, but he's right in that the various terrorist groups have had it in for us because of our presence in the gulf for a couple of reasons - #1, religious, #2, we've propped up Saudia Arabia and Pakistan's governments and kept them (by proxy) from being overrun by extremists.

What I'd like Paul (and others) to touch upon is that these groups have made it clear for years that they don't want us there, and attacked us multiple times under Clinton, who did not take them as seriously as he should have, which led to them getting angrier and bolder, until we finally had 9/11.

Nobody wants to say it (except maybe Ron Paul and a few FReepers here), but if Clinton had taken the threat seriously, these days people would say "Osama been who?"

The danger is that some within the left will draw the incorrect conclusion that we should take an isolationist stance, or at least withdraw some of our military and intelligence assets in the Middle East, Stans, Persia, North Africa and Caucasus. They will in long lasting tradition, turn the world upside down and tell everyone that’s the way they should look at it.

It was common knowledge already before 911 and OBL made no secret about why he was attacking us time and time again. If you go back and sift through the media from khobar towers you’ll see references as to our presence in the holly land. How these little tid bits of information are pieced together by policy makers attempting to advance their career and sell themselves is what’s interesting and disappointing alike.

Problem here is threefold I think. Paul doesn't seem to memorize soundbites so he shoots from the hip (sort of like politicians did when they used to tell the truth). Fox News Wendell Goler twisted his words to ask a question through insinuation Rep. Paul never said. Rudy Giuliani didn't keep his mouth shut and allow Rep. Paul to finish his statement.

Irrelevant finger-pointing is a waste of time, and so is Ron Paul. What's done is done. If we left the Middle East entirely, tomorrow, do you suppose the radicals would just forget about us? Their stated intention is to kill all infidels, and Islamicize the world.

Let's start with Israel ... oops, wait, we can't start there because "only" United States constraint (i.e. protecting the imbecile Arabs prevented Israel from conquering (permanently) Cairo, Damamcus, Beirut and the quite strategic Suez Canal ... in at least a couple of wars.

So much for "legitimate" Arab anger against the U.S. regarding Israel ...
