OKAY HERE'S THE DEAL: We always knew it would be close down to the end. And don't forget that at this point last year I was here telling the nail-biters that Bush would safely carry Virginia even though - up through the closing of the polls, people here thought Kerry would carry Virginia.

But the bottom line is, this is a close race and it will all come down to what we do in the final week.

So...it's time to stop panicking, it's time to stop whining, and it's time to stop sniveling that Jerry isn't "pure" enough on our pet issues.

Anybody who doesn't realize the nightmare that "Governor Kaine" would be is either not paying attention or is likely a troll.

With the contest this close, I have to vote for the lesser evil again instead of voting 3rd party. Kilgore is still better than Kaine.

There will never be a candidate that will meet the "purity" test on everyone's pet issues. My attitude has always been as long as they at least lean toward the correct position there will always be hope.

I read at the RTD site that Kilgore was endorsed by their editorial page but couldn't find the column. Did you happen to see it?

Kilgore's raising all that money tells me business hopes and thinks he's going to win. Maybe that's why he was so high at Tradesports.

Lets hope Kilgore spends the money to good use in the next few days - Tv/Radio Ad blitzes, GOTV efforts, etc. Virginia folks need to learn about the true values of Kilgore. I suspect Virginia folks are sick of seeing Kaine ads everywhere on the local stations.

Thanks! That editorial probably needs a thread of its own in the news forum. If I have a chance, I'll do it later today.

One more week...

Kaine ventures into GOP territory with optimism
by Kiran Krishnamurthy
FREDERICKSBURG -- Stumping with Timothy M. Kaine on Halloween, Gov. Mark R. Warner told a Fredericksburg audience yesterday that the state's GOP ticket represents a "scary" prospect.

Yes, Tim, we know you've always been scared of the truth.

Potts remains 'factor' in race
He'll keep running till end; it's unclear from whom he pulls votes
by Jeffy Schapiro
Independent H. Russell Potts Jr. yesterday appeared to cast himself as the spoiler in a contest for governor he is unlikely to win.

by Paul Bradley
ARLINGTON -- The traffic-congested, vote-rich suburbs of Northern Virginia have become a chief emphasis for Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry W. Kilgore as his campaign for Virginia's governorship enters its final week.

Election's all that can stop negative ads
by Ray McAllister
Virginia's gubernatorial election is merely a week away. With the race far too close to call, the only certainty is this: We are all sick to death of the negative ads and have been sick of them for a long time.

No Ray, getting Tim Kaine to tell the truth would stop the negative ads.

Deeds goes on offensive, loses Wilder's backing
McDonnell describes one ad as 'religiously intolerant' attack
by Michael Hardy
Democrat R. Creigh Deeds has struck back on television, accusing his GOP foe in the attorney general's race of "misleading" attacks and leniency in settling sex-abuse crimes against children.

Here's a little email the RATS are circulating...

From: "Nancy Wallace"
Subject: 1-866-OUR-VOTE to report election incidents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please
forward
Date: Mon, 31 Oct 2005 21:07:28 -0500

Same phone number as last fall - pretty cute, eh? toll-free, of course.
This is for next Tuesday, a week from tonight.

Please distribute this phone number far and wide to every human being
you know who lives in Virginia and New Jersey, or might know someone who
lives in Virginia or New Jersey. PLEASE ASK THEM TO WRITE IT DOWN AND
PUT IT IN THEIR WALLET FOR ELECTION DAY. And for that matter, everyone
because there are small elections all over the place.

If anyone has ANY problems -- from finding their polling place, checking
in a polling place, checking their registration, problems voting
including with a voting machine, or with election judges, provisional
ballots, access for the handicapped, harassment, ANYTHING - this is the
number to report it!!!!!

This is a national database, with a trained staff waiting to take your
call. It worked very well in November 2004, recording over 55,000
incidents.

Please distribute, and put it perhaps on your own emergency contact
information in your wallet and palm pilot. It will probably be the same
number next year.

1-866-OUR-VOTE

yup. Your vote, our vote, we all vote! Let's make sure every registered
voter can vote, and have their vote accurately counted, there's no money
for advertising so it depends on each of us to send this far and wide
(to VA and NJ especially),

Cheers,
Nancy

The best ad I have heard yet (it was radio) was from a statewide small business group that was pro Kilgore. The ad basically said that small business was the heart and soul of the economy and that Kilgore being more pro business would be the better candidate for our future. The simplicity and truth in the message made it very effective.

Business group bucks tradition, backs Kilgore
July 25, 2005

The Virginia division of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has endorsed Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry W. Kilgore.

The state chapter of NFIB, a small-business advocacy group, never has endorsed candidates before, but officials with the group said it was necessary now because 90 percent of their members are supporting Mr. Kilgore.

Gordon Dixon, NFIB's state director, said the differences between Mr. Kilgore and the Democratic gubernatorial nominee, Timothy M. Kaine, are "striking."

Kilgore Accepts NFIB Endorsement for Governor
Release Date: 07/ 20/ 2005

Earlier today at NFIB member business EMC Company in Richmond, an energized and appreciative Jerry Kilgore accepted NFIB/Virginia's endorsement for governor. The endorsement was NFIB's first in a gubernatorial race in Virginia.

Kilgore, flanked by NFIB members including EMC Company CEO Ed Davenport, told the crowd of small-business owners, EMC employees and Virginia media he was proud to accept the endorsement because NFIB is an "organization that shares my view that small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy."

"Government should help businesses when it can, but get out of the way when it cannot," Virginia's Attorney General said. "We cannot let government stifle economic growth by over-regulating small businesses, which are key to the economic vitality of our Commonwealth."

Kilgore promised to be "a governor who seeks to promote a business-friendly environment by keeping taxes low and regulations limited."

Hey corin, what do you make of James Webb making rumblings about challenging Allen?

First I've heard of it. I guess he's more credible than Ben Aflac.

But I'm thinking most Virginians would say "wasn't he the guy on Dragnet?"

Bottom line, an anti-war candidate cannot win in Virginia.

True, but if he runs i'd bet you they'll play up the fact hes a solider and allen's not and play out the 2004 election again.

Oh, out of curiosity, why is it marky mark has like an 80% approval rating according to the washington post. Correct me if im wrong but the only thing marky mark did was raise taxes. I mean yea theres all this presidential hype but allen's getting his fair share of presidential hype and his pproval isnt quite as astronomical as warners.

That's exactly right. That's ALL he did. And it was the only thing the least bit controversial. It took him three years to accomplish it. But the liberal spin machine, aided by the RINOs in the Senate kept pounding away at the "budget crisis" which never existed.

It's the old "tell a lie often enough."

Other than that, he's been the good guy everyone liked. He's stayed out of any major controversy.

I'll never understand why RINOs are so rampant yet i rarely see cases of DINOs gone wild. Maybye the RINOs are just former dems who are just trying to get elected so masquerade as republicans?
