TOPICS: Minnesota; State and Local
KEYWORDS: bushdemocrats; chriscoleman; demprimary; mayor; probushdemocrat; randykelly; saintpaul
In the city of Saint Paul, incumbent Mayor Randy Kelly trails challenger Chris Coleman by a 2-1 margin with roughly 2/3rds of the votes counted.

Elizabeth Dickinson, a member of the Green Party, trails Kelly by roughly 1300 votes.

In 2004, Kelly bucked his party by endorsing President Bush for re-election. even before Kelly's endorsement, the St Paul DFL was looking for a more liberal challenger to Kelly.

The top two vote-getters will advance to the general election in November. Kelly came from behind four years ago to win the mayor's office but will defijnitely have his work cut out for him between now and November.

Too bad, I like Kelly. A very pro-business kind of guy.

Kelly's support is on the right. We don't vote in democrat primaries (which this essentially is). Voter turnout is about 10%. Kelly's supporters will show up in November.

I'm trying hard to find an upside here for the Kelly campaign

The only thing I can say is that the vote totals for Coleman represent the raving far-left wing of the St Paul Democrats. These people would have crawled on their hands and knees across broken glass to vote for Coleman.

The list of potential voters expands as they both head into the general election - but the question remains to be asked whether Kelly is too far gone to catch up in November.

I think he'll be alright come November, as an earlier poster said, tonights primaries are slanted pretty hard to the left. Kelly already knew that his support for the president last election season was going to hurt him with Democrats, I think that he is banking on the support of city businessmen and a moderate/conservative coalition to pull him through the election.

And that should work just fine in St. Paul, which doesn't have the harder left slant of Minneapolis.

Some good news in Nashville's election tonight: The mayor's big tax hike got shot down over 2 to 1 against.

Living Saint Paul, I got to vote. Voted for a Republican School board member and for Randy Kelly. Just trying to do my civic duty.

No, it doesn't look good for Kelly. Then again, it's pretty much only the activists (leftists) that turn out in the primaries. The real test will come in November. Either way I can't see either Coleman or Kelly winning this race in a runaway. My guess is that there'll be a spread of no more than five points at the end.

Also, we don't know which precincts have been counted. Considering the high Green turnout I'd guess they're mostly in anti-Kelly areas.

And, BTW, has anyone seen Mpls results? No one to root for there (not even a Republican on the ballot), but there are certainly many to root against.

He came in 2nd place. He lost by a 2-1 margin to Chris Coleman, a former member of the city council.

However, it's an open primary - so the top two finishers go on to the general election in November.

Kelly will have his work cut out for him. Admittedly, the voter pool increases substantially but there is question as to whether he can make up the difference.

The Green Party candidate took 20% of the vote and those votes won't go to Kelly in the general election either.

I doubt that Kelly has a prayer in November. Living in St. Paul, as I do, I've become aware of how much influence the DFL has on this side of the river.

It's Kelly's turn in the barrel, I'm afraid.

I assume Chris Coleman is not related to Norm Coleman -- probably more would have been made of it if he were...
