7 Republicans abandon GOP on filibuster
by Charles Hurt, The Washington Times
Seven Senate Republicans bolted from their leaders last night and dropped their support for the "nuclear option" in exchange for seven Democrats' abandoning filibusters against three of President Bush's judicial nominees.

Senator Allen quoted in the RTD
"It's not a great deal for two of the nominees who have been accorded a nice wake, having been thrown overboard at sea," Allen said. There was no commitment by the signers of the agreement to end filibusters that have prevented votes on two controversial nominees.

"Thus, this is disappointing for the principle that persons should be accorded the fairness and due process of a vote," Allen said in a statement.
J. Warner helped avert showdown

I haven't found a copy of the Senator's statement yet.

Senator Allen's statement:

Allen Says Senate Deal Is a Major Disappointment on Principle

For Release: May 24, 2005

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator George Allen (R-VA), today issued the following statement on the deal that was struck last night to avoid an immediate showdown over the outrageous and unprecedented Democrat filibusters of President Bush's judicial nominees:

"Overall this is a major disappointment on principle. It's a good victory for 3 of the President's nominees, who the Democrats have vilified. They will get the vote they deserve. But this is not a great deal for 2 nominees who have been accorded a nice wake having been thrown overboard at sea. Thus, this so-called deal is disappointing for all of us who believe in the principle that persons should be accorded the fairness and due process of an up or down vote. Everyone should also clearly see that ultimately, nothing has been settled when a vacancy arises on the U.S. Supreme Court."

There is a good possibility - I won't be signing into the conference until that evening, but we were planning to leave the Shore early that morning to do a little scouting around until the rest of ofriends get there.

J. Warner has not yet begun to feel the heat. That senile old coot.....

Why am I not surprised that Kaine is supporting that multi-million dollar boondoggle that is the Arts Center?
