Everyone remembers the slogan the British coined to describe the American GI's stationed in England awaiting D-Day "they're overpaid, oversexed, and over here". Take a look at the statistics provided under War Brides for some insight on why the Americans were considered oversexed by the British.
"Overpaid, oversexed, and over here"
Meaning - Gibe at the expense of the US army in Europe during the Second World War.
Origin - Widely attributed to the British comedian Tommy Trinder.
"By January 1944 almost a million American GIs are crammed into southern and southeastern England. The arrival of so many Americans constitutes a preliminary, and generally peaceful, invasion in itself. It is a cross-cultural learning experience for the Americans and the English alike. American cigarettes, chewing gum, chocolate bars, nylon stockings, music, and slang elicit a generally enthusiastic English response, but the standard of living enjoyed by GIs far from home astounds some and irritates others among their hosts. And the popularity of the GIs - and their cornucopia of supplies - among the female population causes some Britons to characterize their American allies as Overpaid, Oversexed, and Over Here.
Cambridgeshire during WW2 by WW2 People's War Team
"American airmen were a common sight around Cambridge, and despite being dubbed 'overpaid, oversexed and over here', there was a great effort made to make them feel very welcome and at home."
"Around 48,000 European women, with 22,000 children, emigrated to Canada during and after the Second World War. Today in Canada,
there are some 300,000 children or grandchildren of these War Brides. Over one million American GIs were stationed in Britain in the two years
preceding D-Day.Approximately 130,000 were black Americans. Near 70,000 British girls married their GI boy-friends and 47,000 married their
Canadian soldier. About 20,000 children were born to these GIs, just under one thousand were black children. By 1950, a total of 14,175 German war
brides and 758 Japanese war brides arrived in the USA. In Australia, by 1950, about 650 Japanese girls married their Aussie boy-friends and were
admitted to Australia when the admission ban was lifted in 1952."
Brit:
"The trouble with Yanks is that they are, overpaid, oversexed and overhere."
American:
"The Limey soldiers were underpaid, undersexed and under Eisenhower."
Ok we've learned the origin of the phrase "overpaid, oversexed and over here". We also know the cowardly French surrendered their country to Hitler and the advancing German army. Now think about how the French women must have felt about the cowardly French men who surrendered their freedoms as the Nazis marched through Paris and of all the hardships that followed.
History also teaches us that the French women were far braver than the men.
"It was a life of unimagined privations in which food, fuel, clothes, and other daily necessities were both scarce and rationed. Newspapers became precious insulation against the cold, and posters appeared on city streets warning the population about the dangers of eating rats. Yet, despite the exigencies of day-to-day existence, the women persevered, serving as couriers, translators, and medics, and they proved indispensable to the creation and distribution of the Resistance's most effective weapon: the underground press."
When the brave Americans and Allied heroes freed the French people from the tyrannical rule of the Nazis, the Allies let the French march through the streets of Paris as if they had freed the French people by themselves.
Politics and the Military in the Liberation of Paris -Good Read!
"Reinforcement was a military action. Therefore, Eisenhower could order Leclerc to Paris. The Allies could participate in the movement. The liberation was to be
Allied rather than French. Leclerc was to penetrate into Paris first, as Bradley said, "to help the French recapture their pride after four years of occupation."] But
Allied troops were to accompany the French on their ostensibly military mission to bolster the Resistance in the capital."
"Early in the afternoon, the conference terminated, Bradley flew to Hodges' First Army headquarters in order to start the proceedings. He discovered Leclerc waiting at the First Army airstrip. Bradley told him to move immediately to Paris. Leclerc gave a joyous shout and hastened back to his division, while Bradley and Hodges conferred on how to shape the activity. Hodges suggested having Gerow direct the operation. It would be fair, Hodges said. Gerow and General J. Lawton Collins had been the D-Day commanders, and Collins had had the honor of liberating Cherbourg. Now Gerow was to have his moment of glory."
"On the following morning, 25 August, the official day of liberation, enormous crowds of excited Parisians welcomed the 2d French Armored Division, which swept
the western part of Paris, and the 4th US Infantry Division, which cleared the eastern part. Everywhere were joy, delight, tears of happiness. Unbounded elation
took hold of Parisians and the French and the whole civilized world."
"On 26 August, De Gaulle wrote and thanked Eisenhower for letting Leclerc liberate Paris. With cheering crowds present, De Gaulle, Leclerc, and members of the
Provisional Government walked from the Etoile, now named the Place du General de Gaulle, down the Champs Elysees to the Place de la Concorde. De Gaulle
then proceeded to the Cathedral of Notre Dame where an overflow congregation celebrated a mass of thanksgiving."
These two statements here give us an insight into the French pride factor.
"Bradley said, "to help the French recapture their pride after four years of occupation."
"On 26 August,De Gaulle wrote and thanked Eisenhower for letting Leclerc liberate Paris"
Let's now reiterate what we learned so far:
Of course we all know French surrendered to the Germans.
The American G.I.s were oversexed.
The French pride was hurt and we let them restore it sort of.
The French women were very brave and were key to the underground resistance.
Now everybody has heard of the French and their sexual expression right. Now think about these numbers "About 20,000 children were born to these GIs " from England when our soldiers where stationed there. Those are just the amount of babies known to be born, I'm sure you can imagine how every soldier did not marry an English woman that was impregnated by them. I'm sure some men didn't even know. Don't forget these women were never oppressed by the Nazis either like the French women were.
So you see when you add it all up the story goes like this. The French women wanted to thank the brave Americans and allies instead of the cowardly Frenchmen. The Frenchmen whose pride was already damaged mind you. SO not only did the Frenchmen have to standby while their French women serviced the brave Allied soldiers, the Frenchmen had to raise all the bastard children when the Allies left France. Kind of gives new meaning to the term French Bastards huh? The Frenchmen not only had to swallow their pride and admit that if it weren't for the U.S.A. they wouldn't have their freedom, they had their faces rubbed in that fact by their own women. Doesn't it explain why the French hate the U.S. so much? It's penis envy.
penis envy
(Psychoanal) a Freudian concept in which envy of the penis is postulated as the cause for some of the characteristics found in women
Well by definition I suppose maybe you couldn't call it that. Unless you consider the fact that those French who surrendered their country to Hitler were "girlie men". Maybe this is more like what those French women would say about those Frenchmen "nulle pelotes". I'm also sure the French women were glad they didn't have to descibe the Frenchmen with "".
One of the good things that came from the French prostitutes servicing the brave Americans in WWII is American woman shaving their legs.
I always wondered why French women who shave their legs were considered prostitutes. Here is an explanation I found at everything2.com.
Why American women shave their legs
"About the time of WWII, during the occupation of France, certain items were hard to come by. For this story, the most important one of these were silk stockings, especially those worn by whores. These women wore silk stockings so that when they were in bed with their customers, their legs would feel smooth."
"Their solution was to shave their legs. This left their legs smooth sort of like they were wearing stockings. Supposedly, some of them even would draw seams on the backs of their legs to complete the illusion. (Yes, back-seamed stockings.)"
"Enter the American GI, sweeping through France to go win the war. Once he figures out this scheme, it's not long before he goes home and convinces his wife to try this out, saving money on stockings! Foolish american women buy into this crap and begin shaving their legs and have continued to do so for the last 50ish years."
"So what about those French prostitutes? After the war, they could get silk stockings again, and stopped shaving their legs."
Many a liberal will try to claim some of the following are reasons the French don't like the U.S.
French Tourism Ads Ignite Debate
"Several discussion list members leapt to defend the French, citing the fact that while many Americans may perceive French people as rude, it is really their own
ignorance of French customs that is causing this misconception. Adrian Leeds, the coordinator of a French/English conversation group in Paris, pointed out that the
rules of politesse require a person to say bonjour before asking to purchase a croissant, while prohibiting a person from speaking too loudly in restaurants or on the
métro, or from overhandling the goods in a retail store -- all subtleties that most American tourists would probably never recognize. You end up with the ironic and
unhealthy situation of the Americans and the French thinking the other is extremely rude."
All I can say about the points made above is that the French should learn our customs, we are spending money and helping their economy when we visit. Is that too much to ask? I don't want to say bonjour in order to be able to buy a croissant. I shouldn't have to know this when I visit France. The French employee should be taught that American tourist don't say bonjour before they buy a croissant.
Tell you what, forget about it France. I just won't visit you.
Describe the French as you understand them
I think all the points made in the link "describe the french as you understand them" are invalid because of one simple fact. The fact that the French should be grateful to the U.S.A. for freeing them from Hitler, they should learn to accept our shortcomings or our lack of understanding of their culture.
American: Do you speak german?
Frenchman: No.
American: You're welcome.
My point is that if we had not freed the French people from Hitler they wouldn't have a culture to speak off, bonjour would sound like guten tag.
The French have freedom because of the brave American and allied soldiers and those heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice on D-Day .
The French pay us back by vandalizing these heroes graves who are buried there.
This is how the French repay us for our sacrifices! :(
America-Hating France Rewrites History of WWII
"French history books mention Omaha Beach in a single paragraph, and the Marshall Plan no longer appears at all. In 10 years, it seems entirely possible that America's pivotal role in liberating France will be unknown to French pupils."
All Patriotic Americans should support this cause:
Bring WWII Martyrs Home From Ungrateful France
"Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R-Fla., introduced a bill today to allow families to bring home the remains of fallen World War II soldiers buried in the "Axis of Weasel" nations of France and Belgium."
"I, along with many other Americans, do not feel that the French government appreciates the sacrifices our men and women in uniform have made to defend the freedom that the French enjoy today," Brown-Waite said."
"The remains of our brave servicemen should be buried in patriotic soil, not in a country that has turned its back on the United States and on the memory of Americans who fought and died there," she said. "It's almost as if the French have forgotten what those thousands of white crosses at Normandy represent."
Apparently some Germans feel the same way as the French do about the U.S. and what we did for them.
Florida congresswoman receives package of bones
"Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, R-Fla., was not in the office Friday when her staff noticed a peculiar odor coming from a bulging, 8 ½-by-11-inch envelope postmarked from Germany."
''The contents appeared to be bones of some type, which would explain the odor,'' said Lt. Joe Paez, spokesman for the Hernando County Sheriff's Office. Police, sheriff's deputies and emergency management crews found no explosives or hazardous materials."

Interesting short story about the French in WWII compared to the present day.
French history: Appease & surrender By SEYMOUR YUSEM
This was followed quickly by French participation in the Munich pact that handed over the Czech border areas to Hitler - without agreement by the Czechs - for the sake of "peace in our time." This French agreement to the final destruction of Czechoslovakia - in violation of a defense treaty with France - led to the so-called phony war in defense of Poland, during which French troops spent their evenings watching movies on the Maginot line while Poles were being slaughtered and Warsaw was being obliterated by dive bombers.
It's not a stretch to say the French track record of constant betrayal of its allies and appeasement of its enemies, despite having what was at the time the largest and
best-trained army in the world, led directly to the loss of millions of lives.
We give them a permanent member veto on the UNSC to make them feel like bigshots and maybe restore some of that pride they seemed to be lacking at the end of WWII. I suppose we felt sorry for the French and by giving them a permenent member seat on the UNSC let them feel important once again. We let them seem brave and powerful in WWII and after, you have seen how they thank us for our sacrifices and charity.
I would say the French believe perception is reality. The French do have people, especially liberals, believing they are lovers and not fighters.
I suppose one might say they have their perceptions and the reality in that order.
