I received a postcard from our Guilder Pal, Carolina. I wanted to share it with all of you.

We tried to find Nessie, but she was too shy. We visited the castle on Loch Ness and searched for her. Apparently, some people have spotted her from atop the summit.

Hope everything's going well for the Guild. I really miss having broadband.

Take care,

Fregards, Carolina

Over 2,000 people packed the Peace Center Monday evening to listen to a former first lady talk about the future of women and politics.

Sen. Hillary Clinton was the guest speaker for Furman University's Riley Institute Conference. She answered a number of questions, including when she thinks a woman will become president of the United States.

The focus of the program was the past, present and future of women in local, state and federal government. Clinton's speech was the kick off of the two-day conference. She gave her views on the subject and answered a few questions from the staff and students at the university.

One group of women drove all the way from Jefferson City, Tenn., to be part of the program.

South Carolina has one of the worst percentages of participation in the political arena, which the university's conference hopes to change.

Currently one of 14 women in the Senate, Clinton said more women in office at every level will only make the country stronger. "We must do more to raise the visibility of women in public life," she said, "and encourage more young women and women of all ages to become involved in their communites."

Clinton also said she believes the biggest obstacles holding women back are issues of raising money, balancing family, and fear that they may not be good enough." "That is not a fear that affects a lot of men," she added, getting some laughs from the audience.

Then came the question about why there hasn't been a woman president --and will there be one soon? Maybe Clinton herself? "A woman will eventually -- I hope sooner than later -- emerge from our system and be elected," she said. "But we are going to have to convince people that whatever vestiges of concern or prejudice that still remain about women in executive positions can be eliminated."

Last night at the District Republican Women's Biennial Convention as woman approached me asking my assistance in creating a Republican Women's Leadership Training program. The idea is to train more women to run for office.

I'm mulling this proposal. It seems snooty to decline the invitation, but quite frankly, I'm more interested in training "REAL" conservatives to run for office,, I'm not really concerned about what gender they are as long as they aren't RINOs.

IMHO instead of training a bunch of women to run for office they should be training them to 'campaign'. I can see a real value in a swarm of women campaigning for GWB in the next election.

Madame Wanda Clinton is now a soothsayer and accomplished forecaster, able to to ascertain the future of women? Wow, so, can she tell us who will win the World Series instead?

I quite agree. We can't lose sight of getting more conservative women (and men) in politics. Otherwise, it's just a form of quotas.

More on Hillary's really important speech in S.Car.:

GREENVILLE — U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said ensuring the safety and status of women around the world will make the world safer for democracy. She told 2,000 people at the Peace Center that countries that treat women poorly [Um, Hillary, that's mostly Islamic countries, or did you notice?] are often cauldrons for fundamentalism and violence. It is no longer a luxury to make sure that women are educated and healthy, she said.

It is one way to prevent another repressive society that fosters terrorism, such as Afghanistan or Iraq. [Maybe she did notice, after all. Did she mention it to Suha Arafat while she was laying that big fat kiss on her?]

.... State Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter, D-Orangeburg, said Clinton is an inspiration, as she has risen above the barbs thrown her way and the relentless attention and criticism accompanying her husband’s presidential administration. “She is a helluva woman,” [Well, you got that right] Cobb-Hunter said. “All this stuff just rolls off her back.” ....

Clinton took questions submitted by Furman faculty and staff, [somehow, I bet they were all pre-approved questions] including whether the United States would ever have a woman president —and whether it would be herself. “Just between us,” she said, jokingly. Then she said she anticipates that the United States will have a woman president one day, but that woman will have to answer the perception that still exists that women should not serve as executives.

Outside the Peace Center, Bob Kunst of Florida sold buttons urging Clinton to run for president. He was traveling with the “Clinton-Clark” movement, trying to urge Clinton and Gen. Wesley Clark to run on the same ticket.

Clinton received standing ovations upon taking and leaving the stage, and lengthy rounds of applause, especially when she joked about running for office: “I get speculated about a lot.” source

And, in answer to the pressing question of the day, she was decked out in Ol' Crusty and Pepto Pink, it seems, at least at the book signing prior to the speech:

IMHO instead of training a bunch of women to run for office they should be training them to 'campaign'.

They gotta learn to walk before they can 'RUN'! The idea of running for office might be very scary to some women, as well as men. If they cut their teeth on the process by canvassing neighborhoods and campaigning for someone else, it may give them more confidence and there will be a natural progression for those who are so inclined, to do it for themselves!

What gorgeous photos!! Our daughter's Girl Scout troop is thinking about a 'big trip' to Europe in their Senior year of high school. They actually want to do a 'backpacking trek' through the countries, moving around on a Eurail Pass and staying in hostels when they can. It sounds like a lot of fun!

The biggest problem with being old enough to know most of the answers is: Nobody asks you the questions anymore!

I've been wondering where Carolina has been! I'm jealous - I've always wanted to visit Scotland. Please let her know we've missed her and appreciate the card.

Howdy, Neighbor! Beautiful day in store for us.

I read about your Nobel winner. Great PR for the U. And it shouldn't make your job more difficult, either. Nothing to apologize for, like some instances that make the papers.

I wish she sent a return address and I would write her and let her know how jealous we are. The photos are Scotland are so lovely. I can't wait to hear all about her stay over there.

On the BigWaveBetty front, she thinks that her computer is fixed, but doesn't know yet. How's that for specific?
