Chicks to break with country scene

The Dixie Chicks say they don't want to be a country music band any more.

Violinist Martie Maguire told Spiegel magazine: "We don't feel part of the country scene any longer, it can't be our home any more."

She said she was disappointed other country singers didn't back up the Dixie Chicks in their criticism of George W Bush's politics on Iraq.

"A few weeks ago, Merle Haggard said a couple of nice words about us, but that was it," Maguire complained.

"The support we got came from others, like Bruce Springsteen."

Going home empty-handed from the Country Awards ceremony also made them decide to break with the scene, Maguire said.

"Instead, we won three Grammys against much stronger competition.

"So we now consider ourselves part of the big Rock 'n' Roll family."

So they are quitting the country music business... because they were fired.

"A few weeks ago, Merle Haggard said a couple of nice words about us"

At a Merle concert about 2 years ago, he claimed he "couldn't remember" the lyrics to Okie from Muskogee. His set back was a large pro-worker banner in the socialist realist style. The banner included a hammer, but the sickle being a somewhat aged symbol was not in evidence.

Methinks Merle has gone over to the dark side.

Who was the last country star to successfully migrate to rock? Can't think of one off the top of my head. I know Tanya Tucker went from rock to country, but I'm trying to think of someone who went the other way?

I guess it is OK for Dixie Chicks to be critical of others, but not others to be critical of the Dixie Chicks......what a bunch of hypocritic idiots.

Yeah, I thought of him. But even Elvis always kept one foot in country. In fact, he was never either wholly one or the other.

With this break, the Dixie Chicks need to obviously need to change their name as to not sound so southern and the chicks thing is obviously insultive to females. Maybe something like the Yankee Womyn.

They're now icons for most of the rock music crowd and for the leftist entertainment industry in general. So they'll be heavily promoted and have a good chance of success. Unfortunately.

I just had this traumatic vision of the future....Wesley Clark is elected president and the Dixie Chicks are performing at his inauguration.

"Maybe something like the Yankee Womyn."

Or they could go retro and introduce a note of nostalgia. The Lenin Sisters?

IMHO,rock is dead..more so since MTV turned there back on anyone who can play/sing there own music...

the rest of them died off when they used politics to get over with the masses..something my band avoids

So much for musical integrity. Changing genres for any reason other than "this music is who we are" is lame.

Pretty soon I'll have to come up with some other reasons to bash country music!;) (jk)
