The Guild 9-3-2003 Chilly Hilly

Insiders say a certain social hypothermia has developed between supermodel Christie Brinkley and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. (They deny it and proclaim deep mutual affection.) The scoop is that a year ago, Clinton agreed to speak at a benefit for Brinkley's charity, the Star

Foundation, with the understanding a Hillary fund-raiser would precede the event -- but no fund-raiser took place. Although Clinton came, Brinkley reportedly felt she left too early. Now Brinkley and her husband, Peter Cook, have declined an invitation to join the board of an unrelated Clinton fund-raiser -- an act seen as a slap in the face. "They'll never be asked again," one insider fumed.

Hilly is chilly because she was stiffed out of campaign cash? Nahhhhhh, couldn't be!

I thought I smelled the State dept.

I would also think that GWB wouldn't want to send inspectors to find WMD until it was resonably safe. Of course the most of WMD isn't going to be where the CIA had info it was, since Saddam had plenty of time to move it around.

LOL! I was just looking at the whole batch of pic of the debate. Noticed that out of 39 pics only two featured no lips steeple fingers.

You know I think the world of you but I gotta tell ya, Arnold does nothing for me -- particularly after his equivocating on the "Oui" interview and his inability to articulate what he's going to do differently if he's governor - in specific terms. I was also unimpressed with his ducking the debate tonight - California has but a few weeks to figure out what the heck they're gonna do and who they're gonna do it with. Arnold should have been there.

On the other hand, McClintock had specific answers to every question tonight and I liked all but one of them. Call me crazy but if I lived in California, I'd vote for McClintock. He not only represents my personal views, he's intelligent, informed and has specific answers to tough budget questions.

I know, I know, "shut-up and sing." (grin)

No one would "call you crazy" for voting for McClintock! He's an attractive Republican candidate. But the other side's not crazy either for saying he just can't win and, that being so, he may play spoiler and put Bustamonte in.

I have one totally selfish reason for leaning toward Arnold:

An Arnold win would keep the national media spotlight on California long after the election. THAT would drive the Dem prez candidates out of their ever-lovin' minds...and I would enjoy every minute of their whining that they couldn't get on TV!

Mornin', IG.

Tonight is the big Dem debate in New Mexico. AKA: Kerry's last stand. If he can't get Dean to lose his cool tonight, Dean will be declared the winner and all the pundits will start writing Kerry's political obituary. Can't you just imagine the delightful interview with Mrs. Kerry after he's declared "dead"?!

Another interesting idea....I don't put it past the Dean camp to be in cahoots with the Kucinich people to attack him from the left...allowing him to appear "moderate", thus neutralizing Sore-Loserman.

If Daffy Dean is crowned tonight, I think he may have peaked just a tad too soon. That will give the other Dems (read, the Clintonistas) nearly a year to destroy him before the convention next summer. On the other hand, it will give Mrs. Dean nearly a year to improve her appearance.

And now for something less serious:

Are Chelsea Clinton and boyfriend Ian Klaus circling the altar? The former First Daughter, 23, just returned from a romantic Spanish getaway with her 24-year-old boyfriend.

"Chelsea and Ian's trip basically amounted to a honeymoon before the marriage," a pal says in the National Enquirer's next issue.

That's probably hyperbole, but the two plan to live in New York - mind you, in separate apartments. [Sure]

Though it's said she'lll be earning a salary of $120,000, Chelsea is "going to be living in Manhattan with a good friend of hers," Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton told reporters on Tuesday. "She is starting work this week at McKinsey [& Co.], which is a consulting firm here in the city," said the senator, adding, "I don't know what consultants do. [The smartest woman in the world doesn't know what consultants do?] I asked her that and she goes, 'Oh, mom!'"

Aside to Hillary: The Enquirer also features photos of your bikini-clad baby frolicking with Klaus in the hotel's pool. Ny Daily News

WASHINGTON - (AP) -- Nearly 1.4 million more people in the United States fell into poverty last year -- almost half of them children -- even as the country emerged from recession, according to a Census Bureau survey.

The city of Miami retained the No. 1 poverty ranking among large cities, with 31.2 percent of its population in poverty.

The next highest was Newark, N.J., at 30.6 percent.

Miami-Dade County's poverty rate was 18 percent, and Broward County's rate was 11 percent.

About 12.4 percent of the U.S. population, or nearly 34.8 million people, lived in poverty in 2002, according to the bureau's American Community Survey, to be released today. That was up from 12.1 percent, or 33.4 million, in 2001.

Roughly 17.2 percent of children, or 12.2 million, lived in poverty in 2002, up from 16.4 percent, or about 11.5 million, in 2001.

Median household income rose by $51, when accounting for inflation, to $43,057 after a slight drop the previous year, when the nation was in recession from March to November.

Robert Greenstein, executive director of the liberal-leaning Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, blamed the increase in poverty on rising unemployment and the government's failure to promote more child tax credits for low-income families and stronger unemployment insurance.

However, increases in poverty in 2002 were ''not out of the ordinary'' for a recession, and less adverse than expected, said Sheldon Danzinger, co-director of the National Poverty Center at the University of Michigan.

How appropriate for it to be run opposite the Dwarf debate. Guess I'll have to watch the dwarfs and tape A&E.

I have many reasons for my support for Arnold.

California is my home state, and my entire family lives there.

I have campaigned with him during Poppy Bush's elections. So I know him and I know his enthusiasm and love for this country and his strong support of the GOP Party.

California's recall is about fiscal mismanagement. Arnold has and economic background and is very sucessful in investing and business. He also has some of the best economic minds on the planet on his team.

I see Arnold like Bush, he is surrounding himself with the best advisors for his cabinet so he can deligate. No one man can do it all.

I also respect the people backing him, George Schultz, Milton Friedman, David Drier, The Jarvis Taxpayer Organization....

He has been very clear that he will not raise taxes unless it's a huge disaster ( ie. earthquake). He will rescind the car tax and bring business back to the state.

The governor isn't a social director, so frankly, even though he is to the left of me on social issues, I don't care.

Arnold has energized the voter. He can win. He can get a huge cross over vote. He isn't a 'my way or the highway' kind of guy. He has always had to work with people with opposing views and has done it quite nicely.

Lastly.... I have never seen such meanness from anyone before I have met McClintock supporters. Even McClintock has been childish in his interviews. He is NOT a successful politician. He has lost 2 statewide elections. He is a career politician and has had 22 years in California to enact change and he hasn't. This is not a dynamic man but he does have the possible dishonor of spoiling the election for the GOP. I know that the head of the California party has asked Tom to withdraw his candidacy for the good of the party, and Tom has said no. I do not respect the man.

I have Dish TV and I will never go back to cable. I have never had a problem with it, great reception, more channels, no outages ( unless we have a huge snowstorm and it's maybe out for a minute).

I keep trying to get my friend to switch to Dish, she has Comcast. She keeps saying " I get such great service with Comcast, when it goes out, then come out right away. Last week they came out 4 times and sent a supervisor".

I told her that that is just great, mine has NEVER gone out, so I have NEVER needed 4 service calls and a supervisor.

Oh no! I hadn't thought of the implications...

My dsl internet service (SBC) is 40 bones/month and Mrs.L's DirecTv is 46. We save about $15/month by not having to have a dedicated phone line for the internet connection.

It's still too dang much.

Did you get your browser situation corrected?
