How does a Republican Governor in California help Bush in Calfornia in 2004?
Posted on 08/16/2003 5:29:04 AM PDT by SMGFan
Yes it will be best to have Gray Davis out of office and have a Republican as Governor, but can any explain how having a Republican as Governor helps President Bush's chances of winning Calfornia's 55 electoral votes? Bush lost California in 2000 by a wide margin. Plus, the majority of the California state House and Senate is Democrat as is a majority of the U. S. congressional delegation and both Senators.

The same way Governor Engler helped Bush win in Michigan in 2000.
The same way Governor Jeb Bush helped W to a landslide victory in Florida.
Need I go on.

Governers have a certain amount of control over the voting/election process in their own states. Some explicit. Some implicit.

The Dems won't have Davis to blame CA's woes on Bush anymore. Schwarzenegger said on his Fox and Friends interview that Bush was doing a great job. Davis would never say that. Also, there will be Schwarzenegger Democrats and Independents who will be more open to voting for Bush than before. Who knows how big of an impact it will have, but it will be an impact, a positive one.

I was trying to find a good way to say that and you said it much better than I could.
In addition, California is a state that has a lot of voter's who have an instinctual aversion to voting Republican. But they'll vote for Arnold. If they see that the world doesn't stop if they vote Republican, they'll be leaping a huge psychological barrier. If Arnold proves to be a very popular and successful Republican governor, the sentiment carries over to the presidential election.

That's another reason. Schwarzenegger could shine a light on voter fraud if he chose to do so. Schwarzenegger will steal all of the airtime in CA while he is governor because he has such a presence. He can shine lights on all sorts of things if he chooses-- corruption, illogical arguments, viscious attacks, reform efforts, etc.

--I hope you are right but my suspicion is that with the Demotraitors in control of the legislature the edifice will still be falling down on whoever is Gobernador.
The hue and cry from the Demotraitors will be "Federal help, Federal help" and if not forthcoming the big campaign issue will be "Bush doesn't care about California"--

Moot question since no "R" can win in CA.

If the rest of the country is experiencing high growth, but Cascadia (CA, OR, and WA) aren't, Schwarzenegger can say that it is Dem policies to blame.

The same way Governor Engler helped Bush win in Michigan in 2000. Bush didn't carry Michigan in 2000.

Once the vast intellectual leap is made, to overcome all early religious training, the next step is easy. Democrats celebrate their politics as religion, with certain basic dogma that is rarely challenged. In Arnold, they see somebody they look up to and admire, in another context. Now comes the Terminator (or Conan the Barbarian, or the Running Man, or whatever other heroic protaganist), and he has this one small defect, "Republican? Doesn't he eat Jewish babies for breakfast, or something?" But the reality of Arnold is that he does NOT behave badly in his own home, so if Arnold is mostly a pretty good guy, maybe the rest of the Republicans might not be so bad.

Can't you understand sarcasm without the brackets? No, no matter how blantant and obvious you make the sarcasm, there are always some that don't get it. I refuse to lable my sarcasm and almost always gets someone to tell me to go to DU or something.

The Dems won't have Davis to blame CA's woes on Bush anymore. They media and the Democrats will blame the woes on Schwarzenegger and Bush!! And since the right has clearly made the point that problems are the Governors fault, failure to fix the problems will be Schwarzenegger's fault. The Democrats and media with Arnie as governor will make sure that Arnie and Bush get the blame.
Imagine a Democratic legislature helping Arnold fix the economy. Now imagine a Democratic legislature preventing Arnold from fixing the economy. Now imagine the media blaming the Democrat legislature for not letting Arnold fix the economy. Now imagine the media blaming Arnold for not fixing the economy.
If that does not give you a clue.. nothing will.

That would be the case if we weren't talking about Schwarzenegger as governor. Anyone else wouldn't have the megaphone he has. He can get his message out. McClintock or Simon could not. He could pay for TV ads if need be even. He will say he has a mandate for changing how Sacramento works and he will hammer that point every day.

There are states where Bush narrowly lost that I have hope for.California and New York are so far in the Dems pocket,I doubt Republican governors make much difference.I do think any win is good for the battered Republicans in California.
