The same way Governor Engler helped Bush win in Michigan in 2000.
The same way Governor Jeb Bush helped W to a landslide victory in Florida.
Need I go on.

Governers have a certain amount of control over the voting/election process in their own states. Some explicit. Some implicit.

The Dems won't have Davis to blame CA's woes on Bush anymore. Schwarzenegger said on his Fox and Friends interview that Bush was doing a great job. Davis would never say that. Also, there will be Schwarzenegger Democrats and Independents who will be more open to voting for Bush than before. Who knows how big of an impact it will have, but it will be an impact, a positive one.

Moot question since no "R" can win in CA.

There are states where Bush narrowly lost that I have hope for.California and New York are so far in the Dems pocket,I doubt Republican governors make much difference.I do think any win is good for the battered Republicans in California.
